Mention the history of shanghai academy of fine arts of Shanghai University, to date back to March 5, 1959, Shanghai Academy of Chinese Painting (preparation) in Huaihai Middle Road No. 1413 (formerly Hongying Library, now Xuhui Art Museum) attached to the secondary art school was formally established, and then in accordance with the idea of "art education should be separated from the art academy", the secondary art school attached to the Shanghai Chinese Academy of Painting was reorganized into Shanghai Fine Arts School, after the summer vacation of that year, the school site moved to No. 1448 Huashan Road Happy Village, officially listed "Shanghai Fine Arts School". This was the first professional art school in New Shanghai after Liu Haisu's Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts (the predecessor of Nanjing Academy of the Arts) was relocated in September 1952.

From the "Shanghai Fine Arts School" to the "Shanghai University Academy of Fine Arts" in 1984, and then to the end of 2016, renamed the "Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts of Shanghai University" with relatively independent educational autonomy, the development history from the campus to the "Triumph Road" to the "Shangda Road" is also a process of transformation from the top to the bottom. Starting from the artistic and educational starting points of Professor Wang Jieyin, Yi Yi, Li Tianxiang, Zhang Zishen, Chen Jialing, Zhang Peiji, Qiu Ruimin, Meng Guang, Ling Qining, Tang Ruihe, Zhang Yonghao, Cao Youcheng, Gu Bingxin, Han Heping, and Liao Jiongmo (in alphabetical order of surnames), Shangmei, Shangmei strives to record the academic views, teaching methods and even the conflict of values in the transition period of the Academy of Fine Arts. The book is divided into four parts: art life, art education, art concepts, and art interviews, followed by artwork plates. Some of the contents of the book are presented in the form of oral history, with the purpose of recording the relevant historical materials truthfully and objectively.

Shangmei Footprints series

Carrying on the history of the College from top to bottom, personal footprints strung together

In September 1960, the Shanghai Fine Arts School was relocated to No. 500 North Shaanxi Road and upgraded to Shanghai Fine Arts College. The first undergraduate departments set up four departments of Chinese painting, oil painting, sculpture, and arts and crafts, and temporarily became a "junior college" school for training undergraduates. Later, Zhang Peiji, vice dean of the School of Fine Arts of Shanghai University, was the first undergraduate student of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, and now he is also one of the first 15 old professors to be published in the "Shangmei Footprints" series.

According to Zhang Peiji' recollection, he entered the Shanghai Fine Arts School in 1960, joined the army as a naval soldier after graduating in 1962, and entered the Waterways Bureau as a crew member after demobilization in 1968, and engaged in painting in his spare time. In 1978, he entered the Fine Arts Department of the Shanghai Theater Academy as a teacher, and became colleagues with Fang Shicong and Liao Jiongmo, after which the Fine Arts Department was transferred to the Stage Art Department, and Zhang Peiji served as a teacher of the basic painting course in the Painting Teaching and Research Department. In 1984, the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts was rebuilt into the School of Fine Arts of Shanghai University, when Gu Bingxin, the director of the Department of Chinese Painting, invited Zhang Peiji to join the Department of Chinese Painting, but for various reasons, it was not until 1994, when Zhang Peiji was 50 years old, that he entered the Department of Chinese Painting of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts to teach (the organizational relationship was transferred from The Opera to the Academy of Fine Arts in 1998), until the age of 62 (2006) retired from the vice president of the Academy of Fine Arts of Shanghai University, and after leaving office, students hoped to continue to exchange paintings with him. Zhang Peiji also gave up his original plan to paint after retirement, rented a house near his home, often got together with students on weekends to sketch models, and exchanged their recent situations, gradually forming the "Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts Ink Edge Studio". Zhang Peiji said that he has been associated with the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts since he was 16 years old, especially after entering the Department of Chinese Painting in 1994, he is not only his own major, but also a teaching experience, which has helped his art a lot.

Unlike Zhang Peiji, who only entered the Shanghai University of Fine Arts at the age of 50, Chen Jialing taught at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts after graduating from the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in 1963, and in his view, the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts was like a boat, and has successively relocated to Taofenlou, Caoxi North Road, No. 414 Tianjin Road, the former site of St. John's University, No. 1575 Fanhuangdu Road (now Wanhangdu Road) and other school sites. Until 1983, the School of Fine Arts of Shanghai University was listed on Kaixuan Road.

In 1984, the leadership team of the School of Fine Arts of Shanghai University was established, with Li Tianxiang as the first dean. At that time, there were four departments and four departments of Chinese Painting, Oil Painting, Arts and Crafts (later changed to Design), Sculpture and Foundation, and Liao Jiongmo, the first director of the Oil Painting Department, recalled in an interview with The Paper: "In 1983, I participated in the preparation of the Academy of Fine Arts, starting from buying plaster, buying picture frames, easels, etc., to the later selection of teachers, I participated. At that time, I was the head of the Oil Painting Department, the head of the Chinese Painting Department was Gu Bingxin, who was transferred from the Shanghai People's Fine Arts Publishing House, the head of the Design Department was any member of the Children's Fine Arts Publishing House, and the head of the Sculpture Department was Zhang Yonghao. From 1984 until his retirement in 1997, shangda academy of fine arts was on a small middle school campus on Kaixuan Road, when conditions were very simple. ”

Zhang Yonghao, mentioned by Liao Jiongmo, is the author of the "Portrait of Mayor Chen Yi" on the Bund in Shanghai and the first generation of sculptors in New China, who graduated from the Sculpture Department of the East China Branch of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (now the China Academy of Art) in 1955 under the tutelage of Liu Kaiqu. In June 1956, he entered the newly established "East China Task Force of China Sculpture Factory" (the predecessor of Shanghai Oil Sculpture Institute) and became one of the three core leading members of the unit. In 1985, he was responsible for the preparation of the Sculpture Department of the Shanghai University of Fine Arts and served as the head of the department. For the Shanghai University of Fine Arts in the Kaixuan Road era, Zhang Yonghao summed up "the conditions are not good, the relationship is good." Because the Kaixuan Road campus is very small, but it takes enough space to make sculptures, so at the beginning of the preparation, Zhang Yonghao proposed to have a sculpture studio, and when necessary, borrowed the playground and parking lot of the Shanghai University Headquarters on Kaixuan Road to build a temporary sculpture shed to make large sculptures.

For teaching, Zhang Yonghao encourages students to create more and participate in exhibitions while laying a solid foundation. Therefore, in the early 1990s, the Sculpture Department of the Shanghai University of Fine Arts was well-known in the industry, and Zhang Yonghao has always reminded the professional teachers in the department that they can teach technically, but they should not teach more in creation, and let students' own creative concepts be expressed. At the same time, he also feels that professional teachers can change their works in teaching, but they cannot replace them; in addition to teaching professionals, it is more important to teach students to behave decently. Many of these teaching experiences come from Zhang Yonghao's teacher Liu Kaiqu.

After Zhang Yonghao, in 1999, Qiu Ruimin was transferred to the Shanghai University Academy of Fine Arts and served as the president, and he was also the president of the Shanghai Oil Painting and Sculpture Institute. Since then, on November 10, 2000, shanghai academy of fine arts moved from No. 30 Kaixuan Road to the Baoshan campus of Shanghai University at No. 99 Shangda Road, but the spirit of the old academy of fine arts is still inherited. Qiu Ruimin's separation from the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts began in 1959, when he studied in the Oil Painting Department of Shanghai Fine Arts School, Meng Guang, Wu Dayu, Zhou Bichu, Yu Yunjie, Tang Yun, etc. were all his gentlemen, and also had a deep influence on Qiu Ruimin, "Our generation is inherited from the top to the bottom, and also grew up under the guidance of the predecessors, and the words they said when I was studying, I still remember and ponder. I and my students often talk about how the previous generation educated us, what their spiritual state is like, learning to paint is learning skills, but in the end it is your character that is painted. The foundation should be solid, and your character should be reflected in your picture. Qiu Ruimin said.

Respect history, classic heritage

In 2014, the "Shanghai American Footprint Project" was established, and after 5 years, it was written into 15 volumes, of which Wang Dawei, former dean of the School of Fine Arts of Shanghai University and executive dean of shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, was indispensable. In Wang Dawei's view, today's Academy of Fine Arts is the result of the joint efforts of all the teachers recorded in this series of books, or all the teachers, students and employees who have not been recorded, hoping that this series of books can witness this history and dedicate it to all the teachers and students who have worked and studied in the Shanghai University of Fine Arts. At the same time, I also sincerely thank Li Wei and other teachers who participated in the compilation of the series of books, and it is their all-out efforts that can present this set of relatively complete results.

"Shangmei Footprints" records the history and academic spirit of an academy. "We must not forget every comrade who has contributed to the historical development of the Academy. When implemented in specific academic work, they are the history of the school, and the history of the school is not isolated, but must also be included in the historical context of Shanghai art education. The 15 professors who are now included are representatives of the history of the university. Respecting history and passing on the classics is also the consistent spirit of the college. Li Chao, vice president of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, said.

In the historical transformation of the education of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, "Shangmei Footprints" takes the establishment of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts in 1984 as the starting point, studies and compiles the artistic and educational concepts of Mr. Lao, and also draws ideological nutrients from them, and also "folds" the memories of a generation of people in the Academy of Fine Arts. If the time is traced back to 1959, then Zhou Bichu, Zhang Chongren, Wu Dayu, etc. will outline a richer Haipai art education.

Every old gentleman in "Shangmei Footprints" has his own artistic experience and creative path, and through the publication of the series of books, we can understand the "where did the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts come from", and the achievements of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts today are based on the dedication of these predecessors. However, at the same time as the inheritance of classics, it is more important to "where to go", in the Guanghai school of art education concept, to serve the discipline construction of Shanghai art education, latecomers to establish a model of art and teaching, but also to harvest the power of "cultural innovation".

Nowadays, the graduates of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts are active in all walks of life in the field of art in Shanghai, but in the interview, some old gentlemen also mentioned the problems currently facing Shanghai art education, and where the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts will go in the future is what they are worried about.
