In the late Tang Dynasty, Tang Zhaozong was a tragic emperor, as a "protégé Tianzi", he once used thunderous means to eliminate the eunuch forces, but in the end, he died under the sword.
Like the emperors of the late Tang Dynasty, Tang Zhaozong's succession was inseparable from the help of eunuch forces. In March of the fourth year of the Guangqi Dynasty (888), on the occasion of Emperor Yizong's death, because his son was still young, the eunuch clique in charge of the court began to search for candidates among Emperor Yizong's sons. At that time, tian Lingzi, a great eunuch who had fallen into power and opposition at that time, was forced to give way to the eunuch Yang Fugong because of the anger caused by the public, and appointed himself as an envoy of the Xichuan supervision army, and went to Chengdu to join his brother Chen Jingxuan, and was later killed by his righteous son Wang Jian. In order to more firmly control power, he chose Li Jie, the seventh son of Emperor Yizong of Tang, who accompanied Emperor Yizong when emperor Xuanzong fled to Sichuan, because in his opinion, Li Jie got along with him and was more conducive to his monopoly on the imperial program. On March 6, 888, the first year of Wende's reign, Li Jie, the Prince of Shou, was made the emperor's brother-in-law, replacing Emperor Wuzong, who was already unable to speak. The courtiers saw that he was "physically bright-looking, heroic, and privately celebrated." On the eighth day, Emperor Zhaozong collapsed, and his will ordered this emperor's brother-in-law to take the throne, that is, to be located in front of the coffin, and was renamed Ye, which was for Emperor Zhaozong.

What Yang Fugong did not expect was that Tang Zhaozong, who was personally promoted to the throne by himself, was not the absurd Tang Zhaozong, and the first thing he did after taking the throne was to eliminate the eunuch forces. The Old Book of Tang and the Book of Zhaozong reads: "The emperor attacked the book well, especially Confucianism, and had a majestic spirit, and had the legacy of Huichang. With the first dynasty's mighty and mighty empire and the invasion of the country's fate, the honorific chancellor, detailing the Daoist techniques, was intended to restore the old business and command the world. The beginning of the throne, called chinese and foreign. For this new monarch who has had the dream of reviving the chaogang since the beginning of his reign and "called it at home and abroad", Yang Fugong deeply feels the crisis he is facing. He was not willing to be left with power, but instead recruited righteous sons, cultivated henchmen, and placed them in important military and political positions, when people called them "Waizhai Langjun", and the scope of activity of the righteous sons was not only in Chang'an, in order to strengthen ties with the feudal towns, Yang Fugong sent more than 600 righteous sons to serve as military envoys in various feudal towns to strengthen his right to speak in the dynasty; at the same time, he also openly quarreled with Zhaozong, first sending Zhaozong's uncle Wang Zhi into exile in Lingnan, and then sending people to sink his passenger ship and bury him in the belly of the fish, and his purpose in doing so was not his. It is to shock the present day: Since I can embrace you as emperor, I can also depose you and establish a more obedient emperor!
Zhaozong, who had secretly accumulated strength, could only choose to be patient, and in the face of the eunuch power after the Anshi Rebellion, he had to fight steadily and gradually divide the camp that brought about the chaos of the country. Soon, this young emperor began to lay out, on the one hand, he treated the courtiers with courtesy and won their support, on the other hand, he began to find the power to turn against Yang Fugong among the many righteous sons, he promoted Yang Shouli to the equivalent of the prime minister, and gave him the surname Li and changed his name to Li Shunjie, and Li Shunjie, who climbed the emperor's high branch, naturally understood Zhaozong's painstaking efforts, and he not only quickly achieved a cut with the "righteous father", but also by strengthening the control of the forbidden army. Assisting Emperor Zhaozong to further weaken Yang Fugong's power, what made Yang Fugong feel even more in crisis was that the local forces he had carefully laid out were also changing, especially the newly rising fanzhen force, Zhu Wen, was on the side of Zhaozong. When Emperor Zhaozong finally launched an attack on Yang Fugong and reduced him to Fengxiang Overseer, the eunuch who had been in power made a request to the young emperor to stay in Chang'an and return home, and Zhaozong did not think too much about it and agreed.
"I have aided King Lishou in the midst of the thorn hazel, and there is such a negative disciple who has the son of heaven, and has attained the throne, but he is the elder of the country." This is a depressed sentence uttered by Yang Fugong, who lived in seclusion, in a letter to yang Shouliang, the righteous son of the Xingyuan Jiedushi envoy. In the eyes of this eunuch who had been deprived of his power, Tianzi was just a "protégé" that he had cultivated and supported, and this "protégé" deposed him as a "fixed country elder" after he received the honorific position, which was really a "negative" act. Unwilling to leave the political arena, he plotted a rebellion with Zhongyizi at home, and as a result, the plot was revealed, Li Shunjie led the forbidden army to suppress it, Yang Fugong and others fled in panic, and were captured by his old enemy Han Jian while passing through Huazhou, and finally escorted to Chang'an and beheaded for public display.
However, Tang Zhaozong, who had removed Yang Fugong, was not easy, and the increasingly powerful forces of the new feudal town almost allowed him to leave Chang'an City. He had wanted to do his best in a battle to suppress the strong clan, but the result was the opposite of what he wanted, not only was he defeated in succession, but also caused a greater political crisis, this emperor who had no strong troops had no prestige in the eyes of the clan forces, they attacked each other, with the intention of "holding the son of heaven to order the princes", poor Zhaozong was like a puppet who was contested by the four forces, and fled Chang'an several times, away from the imperial capital. At the same time that the central government was shrinking a little, as a new feudal power that had risen rapidly from the Huangchao Rebellion, Zhu Wen attacked all the way and was invincible, first eliminating Qin Zongquan, who was known as a lonely widow in Cai Prefecture, and then defeating Shi Pu, controlling Huanghuai, taking Hebei, and in the first year of Guanghua (898), he sent troops to attack Li Keyong, who was occupying Taiyuan, although Taiyuan was not breached, but most of Hedong was already included in Zhu Wen's pocket. When this ordinary pawn in huang chao's army had become the biggest warlord in the chaotic tang dynasty after twenty years of southern conquest and northern warfare, his eyes began to turn to a group of cars rushing to Chang'an, and among the cars, Tang Zhaozong, who had been torn apart by the town of Fanzhen, was returning to the imperial capital full of decadent and ruined wells after experiencing the waves of robbery.
Back in Chang'an, Zhaozong's mood was already depressed to the extreme, and he no longer had the ambition of Ling Yun at the beginning of his reign, but instead had a long and short sigh and an extremely depressed mood all day long. He was "suddenly unhappy, drunk, and moody", and in the midst of drunkenness, the eunuchs and palace ladies often became the targets of his venting, and were either beaten or killed. At that time, although Yang Fugong had been eliminated, the eunuch, a cancer attached to the body of the Tang Dynasty, could grow wildly at any time, and when Cui Yin, who was close to Zhu Wen, coerced Emperor Zhaozong to appoint him as chancellor, directly shaking the eunuch power, when the eunuch Liu Jishu, who took over the lieutenant of the Shen Ce Army, realized that the emperor's indiscriminate killing was both a danger and an opportunity for him, he decided to take a risk and brew a big conspiracy.
In November of the third year of Gwanghwa (900), Liu Jishu took advantage of Emperor Zhaozong's drunkenness and led a group of eunuchs to the palace, and Zhaozong was forced to hand over the Jade Seal of chuanguo, and together with His Empress He and a dozen personal attendants, he was placed under house arrest in ShaoyangYuan. Poor TangTang Nine-Five-Year-Old Zun was completely undignified in front of this group of eunuchs, the Shaoyang Courtyard was closed and locked, the keyholes were sealed with tin juice, and Zhaozong could only receive food from a small hole every day. The crown prince Li Yu, who did not know it, was embraced by them as an emperor without an imperial title in the history of the Tang Dynasty. In the turbulent Tang Dynasty, the emperor has become a puppet that comes and goes, a tool to choose at will.
Tang Zhaozong eventually died at the hands of Zhu Wen. As the largest warlord of the late Tang Dynasty at that time, Zhu Wen was "invited" by the courtiers to remove the castration and quell the chaos, but he did not expect that after Zhu Wen put down the eunuch clique, he became the emperor's biggest nightmare like Dong Zhuo at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty. At the same time that Chang'an was turned into a sea of fire by Zhu Wen, Zhaozong was also held hostage to Luoyang like a prey by this chaotic warlord. After coming to Luoyang with Zhu Wen, Zhaozong's situation can be imagined, his more than two hundred young attendants were all strangled to death by Zhu Wen overnight, and replaced by the same number of attendants, at first Zhaozong did not notice, after a long time to realize that all around him were Zhu Wen's eyes and ears, helpless, he could only borrow wine to pour sorrow.
These two sentences, which are included in the Quan Tang Poems, are said to be a desolate question issued by Zhaozong in the Luoyang Palace to the thunder overhead. When Zhaozong, who was unarmed and surrounded by ears and ears, was powerless to return to heaven, he could only pray for the thunder of the heavens to kill Zhu Wen, the "thief who stole the country". However, this was destined to be only an absurd joke, and Zhu Wen, who had long been impatient, finally slashed a fatal knife at poor Zhaozong. On the night of August 11, 904, the sleeping Zhaozong was hacked to death by the intruding soldiers, and at the age of 37, he could no longer see the sunrise of the Tang Dynasty.
