This year marks the 110th anniversary of the birth of Tan Qijun, a famous historical geographer, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and professor of Fudan University. On May 25th, Fudan University held the symposium and the unveiling ceremony of the 110th anniversary of the birth of Academician Tan Qijun of "Perseverance and Lifelong Achievement", deeply remembering the founder of Chinese historical geography, inheriting his noble spirit of academic service to the country, and carrying forward his noble character of being a teacher. This is also one of the series of activities of Fudan University's "Tribute to the Master".
Zhao Wen, vice chairman of the Central Committee of the Jiusan Society, attended the forum and delivered a speech; Jiao Yang, secretary of the party committee of Fudan University, Xu Jiong, deputy director of the Propaganda Department of the Shanghai Municipal CPC Committee, and Yang Weiren, second-level inspector of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee for Education and Health Work, delivered speeches at the forum. Mr. Tan Qijun Zhesi, the famous bronze scholar Tan Derui, Mr. Tan Qijun's disciple, the librarian of the Central Museum of Culture and History, and the senior professor of liberal arts of Fudan University Ge Jianxiong, and the young teacher Huang Xuechao of the Institute of Chinese Historical Geography of Fudan University spoke at the forum. More than 80 Fudan teachers and students, including Shen Wenzhong, vice chairman of the Shanghai Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Li Guojuan, director of the Organization Department of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee of the Jiusan Society, Xu Gencai, vice chairman and editor-in-chief of the China Map Publishing House, Liu Min, president of the Shanghai Geographical Society, Xu Zheng, deputy secretary of the party committee of Fudan University, Chen Zhimin, vice president of Fudan University, Zhao Dongyuan, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and director of the United Front Work Department, and other Fudan teachers and students, as well as Mr. Tan Qijun's family, disciples, former friends, and academic colleagues, attended the forum.
Mr. Tan Qijun has cherished the mountains and rivers of the motherland all his life, diligently governed learning, devoted himself to educating people, persevered and persevered, and was one of the most important founders and pioneers of modern Chinese historical geography, and was elected as a professor of liberal arts as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, leaving an important and brilliant mark in the history of the development of new Chinese philosophy and social sciences, the history of education, and the history of Fudan in 116 years.
In the 1930s, Mr. Tan Qijun and his teacher, Mr. Gu Jiegang, co-founded the Yugong Society and the semi-monthly magazine Yugong, which are regarded as the beginning of modern Chinese historical geography. In the following decades, we have focused on promoting the development of historical geography from traditional historical geography to a modern discipline, laying a solid foundation for the scientific and systematic development of Chinese historical geography. In the 1950s, the state initiated the compilation and mapping of the Historical Atlas of China. Mr. Tan Qijun became the host of this national academic project, with the participation of more than 200 experts and scholars in related fields across the country, which took more than 30 years. The result of this half-life effort is still the most detailed historical political region atlas in China, and is known as one of the two most important achievements of the social sciences of New China. His editor-in-chief's "China Physical Geography, Historical Physical Geography" and "National Historical Atlas of the People's Republic of China" are all state-level projects that serve the national strategy and economic and social development and lay the foundation of the discipline. Mr. Tan has been teaching in Fudan for 42 years, and many of his students have become leaders in the field of Chinese historical geography.
"What impressed me the most, sir, was the word 'serious', consistent and never slack. With such a tree of example in front of us, subtle, more cordial and powerful than any earnest teaching. Jin Chong, former executive deputy director of the Central Literature Research Office, expressed his nostalgia for Mr. Tan Qijun in a handwritten letter. In his letter, he recalled the details of Mr. Tan Qijun's lectures and guidance of students' papers in Fudan, exercising students' ability to read ancient books, organize materials and analyze reviews. He sent a message to his colleagues in Fudan Shidi to live up to Mr. Li's high expectations, do well what Mr. Wants to do but is too late to do, and continue to push forward, "is the best memorial for Mr. Shidi". The letter was read out by Xu Zheng on his behalf.

After the symposium, Zhao Dongyuan, Xu Gencai, Zhou Zhenhe, senior distinguished professor of Fudan University, Wang Wenchu, editor of the Historical Atlas of China, Zhang Guoyou, vice chairman of the Geographical Society of China, and Zhang Qing, president of the Shanghai Historical Society and professor of Fudan University, jointly presented a photocopy of Mr. Tan Qijun's manuscript "History of Chinese Immigration", the first day cover of the 110th anniversary of Mr. Tan Qijun's birth, and the first issue of "Historical Geography Research" in 2021 to the young teachers of the Institute of History and Geography of Fudan University. Encourage young teachers of history and geography to inherit Mr. Li's academic character and patriotic spirit.

Certificates and collections, academic masterpieces, cartography materials and manuscripts, guidance of student papers... More than 70 physical exhibits and rich picture materials vividly tell mr. Tan Qijun's academic origins and academic experience, as well as his outstanding contributions to the construction of the discipline of history and geography and the cultivation of virtue trees. The exhibition of cartographic materials and manuscripts such as the manuscript of the historical map of the Tang Dynasty drawn by Mr. Tan Qijun (partial), the interpretation of the Historical Atlas of China, the list of place names in the Historical Atlas of China, and the Technical Design Book for the Compilation and Drawing of the Atlas of Public Opinion of Chinese Dynasties further answers the long-standing questions of scholars about "why Tan Tu was painted like this, why is this place painted here", and further reflected the rigor and scientific nature of the compilation of the "Historical Atlas of China". The exhibition is located in Zhihe Hall, the second floor of Guanghua Building, Fudan University, and lasts from May 25 to June 15.
In the afternoon of the same day, representatives of the field of historical geography and representatives of Mr. Tan Qijun's disciples gathered together to reflect on Mr. Tan's philosophy and academic contributions.
On the occasion of the 116th anniversary of Fudan University, the Institute of History and Geography of Fudan University held the "Commemoration of the 110th Anniversary of the Birth of Mr. Tan Qijun and the Academic Report of the 2021 School Celebration", which held four group reports from May 18 to June 1, and 31 academic lectures were conducted by the researchers of the institute, covering many fields of physical geography and human geography such as cities, water systems, climate, political districts, territories, maps, and economy, so as to serve as academics and academic reports to Mr. Tan Qijun by future generations of scholars.
