The Mill on the Floss

Overview of works

The Mill on the Floss River is George Eliot's second tome. The story tells that during the Victorian period in England, Dulliver, the miller of st. Auger by the Foros River, had a lawsuit over debt, and the lives of his children Tom and Maggie changed significantly after the bankruptcy. After several years of hard work, the clever and hard-working Tom finally saved enough money to pay off the debt and buy back the mill, but Maggie's love was frequently frustrated by Tom's opposition. When the two reconcile in distress, the ferocious flood eventually engulfs the brothers and sisters, but their deep brotherhood cannot but be touched.

In the book, Maggie is pure, kind, warm, and strong, in stark contrast to the cold, narrow-minded people around her, but she is impulsive and irrational by nature, and eventually does things that society, her family, and herself cannot forgive, so that her heart suffers greatly. In Maggie, the contradictory unity of the character qualities of traditional tragic characters is embodied.

The work is considered a masterpiece that successfully combines tragedy with realism. The death of the protagonist, Maggie, embodies the unity of traditional tragic structures and realism. George Eliot retained the principles of traditional tragic character in his portrayal of the character.
