The website of the School of Economics of Peking University today published an obituary: Xiao Zhuoji, a well-known economist and professor at the School of Economics of Peking University, died at the age of 84 at 23:34 on November 14.

Economist Siu Chuu Kee died and was the prime minister's thesis advisor

Xiao Zhuoji, born in December 1933 in Shantou, Guangdong Province, was admitted to the Department of Economics of Chinese University in September 1953, majoring in political economy, and was recommended to study political economy because of his character and excellence over the third year, under the supervision of Professor Song Tao, a famous Chinese economist.

After graduation, Xiao Zhuoji was assigned to the Department of Economics of Peking University, and in only 7 years, he was promoted from lecturer to doctoral supervisor step by step, becoming one of the few doctoral supervisors in the field of economics at that time, and began to enjoy the State Council's expert allowance with outstanding contributions in 1992.

Previously, there have been many media reports: Xiao Zhuoji is Premier Li Keqiang's master's thesis supervisor. In 1988, Li Keqiang received a master's degree in economics with the article "Rural Industrialization: Options in Structural Transformation", and his thesis was directed by Xiao Zhuoji.

In the research fields of China's economic development strategy, economic system reform, property rights system, foreign-related economy, etc., Xiao Zhuoji has published a series of innovative views, written 12 books, more than 300 papers, and edited more than 20 monographs, about 15 million words, which have had a great impact at home and abroad. He is also one of the earliest scholars engaged in the theoretical research of the securities market in China, and has played an important role in the construction and improvement of China's securities market.

Xiao Zhuoji is not only a well-known scholar, but also a well-known social activist, who also holds many social positions, and has served as a government expert consultant and advisory member in Beijing, Yunnan, Jilin and other provinces and cities, as well as a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, a member of the National Political and Economic Committee, the director of the Beijing Market Economy Research Institute, and the president and editor-in-chief of the magazine "Economic Circles".

Since the beginning of reform and opening up, he has participated in the discussion of many major theoretical issues in China's economic theoretical circles. Although some views were considered heretical by some at the time, they have now been proven correct by practice.

In the early 1980s, the issue of state-owned enterprise reform in China was constantly debated and inconclusive. In 1981, Xiao Zhuoji published "Several Ideas on Reforming the Economic Management System", and was the first in the domestic academic circles to put forward the "theory of separation of the two rights of state-owned enterprises", that is, the ownership belongs to the state, and the right to use (the right to operate) belongs to the enterprise. Although this is common knowledge of market economy theory today, it was indeed a relatively important theoretical breakthrough at that time.

The broad and profound Marxism deeply attracted Xiao Zhuoji, who made two major vows when he was a graduate student in the economics department of Chinese Min University, one was to read through the Complete Works of Marx and Engels, and the other was to write biographies of two revolutionary teachers.

Following the publication of the biography of Engels in 1985, in 2008, on the occasion of the 190th anniversary of Marx's birth, Xiao Zhuoji published the biography of Marx, which he had devoted more than 50 years of painstaking efforts. These two books, the first academic research book written by Chinese scholars, "Marx's Biography" and "Engels's Biography", are major breakthroughs in the field of social science research in China.

In order to write a biography of Marx, Xiao Zhuo made a special visit to Europe in April 1998, following the course of Marx's life and work, visiting Trier, Germany, the birthplace of Marx, the University of Bonn where Marx studied, Cologne where Marx founded the Rheinische Zeitung, Brussels where Marx and Engels wrote the Communist Manifesto, Paris where Marx turned from revolutionary democracy to communism, London where Marx studied and wrote Capital, and visiting the British Museum in London. Visited Marx's Cemetery at Highgate Cemetery in London.

Xiao Zhuoji believes that economics is the study of the people through the ages. The study of economics must be applied, combining theory and practice.

He has emotionally pointed out that Marx "did not study for the satisfaction of individual interests, nor for the sake of research, but for the needs of the proletarian revolution." Similarly, Xiao Zhuoji did not study for the sake of research, but used Marx's economic theory to study the real economic problems raised in practice.
