Lying on a hospital bed, Zhang Lao, who has passed the age of 97, is very weak because he has just undergone surgery, his voice is very small, and he intermittently recalls the experience of joining the army to resist Japan. Zhang Lao is a native of Huilong'an Village, Dongban Township, Yuechi County, Sichuan Province. He signed up for the army after the New Year in 1941 and joined the 324th Regiment of the 178th Division of the 47th Army of the 36th Group Army of the National Revolutionary Army.

In that year, Zhang Jie and other recruits set off from Yuechi to Suining, from Suining to Xian, Wanyuan, and then to Shaanxi to Henan. Zhang Jie was assigned to the guard battalion of the group army, using a submachine gun that was longer than a pistol and shorter than a rifle, and was mainly responsible for the safety of the commander. The commander-in-chief at that time was Li Jiayu, who later died heroically in Shaanxi County, Henan. Zhang Jie successively participated in the zhengzhou, Kaifeng, Pingdingshan and other places to fight against the Japanese army, and was once injured by a bomb thrown by a Japanese aircraft on the battlefield.

After the surrender of Japan, Zhang Jie joined the 1st Battalion and 1st Company of the 883rd Regiment of the 92nd Division of the 99th Army of the National Revolutionary Army. On December 28, 1948, Zhang Jie rebelled with the army in Xiguan Town, Chunhua County, Shaanxi Province, and entered the 548th Regiment of the 183rd Division of the 61st Army of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, and entered Sichuan with the army, successively serving as a sergeant and the director of the Daxian Military Sub-district.

In November 1954, Zhang Jie was demobilized due to illness and returned to his hometown to work as a rural water conservancy officer, and later served as a township credit social planner; Since July 1962, he has been working as a farmer for "historical reasons".
