Lin Qing: Academician Zhu Qingshi openly publicized pseudoscience, which is extremely irresponsible behavior

author:Skeptic explorers

In recent days, I have seen many discussions on the Internet about a speech by Academician Zhu Qingshi at the Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and I also feel that the problem is very serious, because just from the introduction of his lecture, we can see that his basic views are very absurd. Looking at some of the comments and quoting the contents of his report, I understand that he is completely contrary to the scientific method in many ways.

I believe that Academician Zhu Qingshi's views on the ultimate science is Buddhism, and that the views on quantum consciousness, human true qi, and the existence of superpowers are completely contrary to the mainstream cognition of the scientific community, and the vast majority of scientists will not accept his views. Most of the scientifically trained person with basic scientific qualities can see through the absurdity of his views at a glance, and his views are not supported by any experimental facts, but only the so-called personal experience with a very strong subjective consciousness, refuting his views and having nothing to do with specific disciplines, in fact the subjects it explores are not its own professional category.

The problem is that these views of his are challenging the basic bottom line of the entire modern scientific argument, such as equating science with Buddhism and arguing that there are supernatural forces in the human body, which are contrary to basic scientific common sense.

Lin Qing: Academician Zhu Qingshi openly publicized pseudoscience, which is extremely irresponsible behavior

Science certainly allows, with different views, even those that have always seemed absurd. We're not saying he can't have that view, he can certainly have it. If he goes to an academic journal to submit an article or give an academic report at an academic symposium, I think it is reasonable. However, as a celebrity with a high reputation, he was once the president of the University of Science and Technology of China and SUSTech, and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and it was a very irresponsible attitude to use such a dazzling title to publicize his views that were contrary to mainstream scientific cognition.

Because a considerable part of his audience and fans are untrained and do not understand what is the scientific method, it is very easy to be confused by the aura on its head, thinking that what he said is right, excited by his new discovery, and even some people may follow his line of thought into a dead end.

His report is also widely disseminated on the Internet, and it is not known how many people who are interested in science but do not know much about the scientific method will be confused by him, so this harm is extremely great, it is an extremely bad behavior.

Of course, he was invited to give a report, we have no right to interfere, he has made this report, we can not prohibit these fallacies from continuing to spread, but we as popular science people, we have the obligation to do our best to make a scientific voice.

As a veteran who has been working on the science popularization front for more than 20 years, I hereby solemnly declare that I strongly condemn Mr. Zhu's view of such irresponsibility in public to promote his pseudoscience to the public!

I would like to say very clearly to the audience here that the method of thinking he uses in this report is not a scientific way of thinking, and the views he disseminates are fundamentally contrary to the mainstream cognition of the scientific community, which in our eyes is pseudoscience! Popular science people only recognize science, but do not recognize any big people, even if you are an academician and president, as long as you violate the spirit of science and scientific methods, we must give strong condemnation!

Of course, we are opposed to these practices of Academician Zhu Qingshi. My own point of view is relatively clear, I think Mr. Zhu bears the aura of an academician, but judging from the content of his report, he did not use scientific methods to study and verify the conclusions he wanted to express.

My definition of pseudoscience is that you obviously don't use a scientific way, but you have to label yourself as scientific. As a popular science person, I naturally want to oppose pseudoscience. In other words, if this report is done by an old Chinese medicine doctor or qigong master, I believe that the scientific community or the science popularization community will not have much reaction, because in fact, chinese medicine universities often have similar reports. But this time it is Mr. Zhu Qingshi, who bears the aura of academician, then the impact on the public may be very large, and the harm to science and science may also be very large, especially for teenagers whose world outlook and values have not yet been formed, I think there will be wrong guidance.
