Recently, the Lushui Pipe Protection Branch of Gaoligongshan National Nature Reserve in Yunnan Province, together with relevant scientific research institutions, has for the first time found out the population of the rare and endangered nujiang golden snub-nosed monkey in the jurisdiction of The Western Slope of Gaoligong Mountain. The survey showed that the monkey herd had at least 149 individuals, a significant increase from the previous rough survey.

The survey is the first to have a relatively complete record of the number of individuals in the monkey group in the Western Slope of Gaoligong Mountain, and the results show that the monkey group has at least 149 individuals and more than 20 family units, of which the largest family unit consists of as many as 13 individuals.

The survey further clarified the population status of this critically endangered species in China, and also provided an important basis for long-term monitoring and scientific research, and showed that in recent years, protective measures such as strengthening the patrol of protected areas and cracking down on violations involving wild animals and plants have achieved positive results.

In the next step, the reserve will continue to cooperate with relevant scientific research institutes to strengthen monitoring, expand the scale of management and protection teams, and continuously fill the gap in human cognition of the Nujiang golden snub-nosed monkey.

In addition to the Katama jurisdiction, the number of nujiang golden snub-nosed monkeys in other jurisdictions has also increased

In mid-April this year, when the staff of the Lushui area of Gaoligong Mountain National Nature Reserve were tracking and monitoring the Nujiang Golden Snub-nosed Monkey in the wild, they found that there were many small monkeys in the monkey group, and took a precious image of the monkey mother holding the baby monkey.

Wang Xinwen, deputy director of the Lushui Pipe and Conservation Branch of Gaoligong mountain national nature reserve, introduced that the nujiang golden snub-nosed monkey family area in lushui area is relatively complete, and the number of monkeys has increased significantly. Previously, through observation and monitoring, it was confirmed that there were more than 70 on the eastern slope of Gaoligong Mountain and more than 100 on the western slope. There are about 200 nujiang golden snub-nosed monkeys in Lushui City, Gaoligong Mountain. Through this year's field follow-up observation, it was found that the population of this group on the western slope has increased, and from the number of young monkeys observed at the scene, it has increased by 20 to 30.

At present, the known distribution range of the Nujiang golden snub-nosed monkey is the Katama area, The Loma area, the Nami area, and the Blocking Luo area in Lushui City. The management and protection department of the local nature reserve has overcome various difficulties and actively carried out the protection of the golden snub-nosed monkey of the Nu River. Forest administrators from townships and villages have long carried out publicity on wildlife protection in villages and schools around the protected areas. They patrol the mountains for no less than 22 days a month, promptly stop villagers from going to the reserve to find wild vegetables, digging up medicinal materials and other behaviors that interfere with the life of the Nujiang golden snub-nosed monkeys, and protect the healthy growth of the Nujiang golden snub-nosed monkey population.

Know a little more

The Nujiang golden snub-nosed monkey is a first-class key protected wild animal in China, which was first discovered in 2010 and listed as a critically endangered (CR) species in the Red List of Endangered Species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with an existing population of about 400 to 500 in the world.

It is a national first-class protected animal, mainly distributed in the primary forest of 1700-3200 meters above sea level in the Gaoligong Mountains of China and the northeast of Kachin Prefecture in Myanmar. Nujiang golden snub-nosed monkey weighs about 20-30kg, has a body length of 55.5cm, a tail length of 78cm, and is covered with dense black hair, and has a pinch of slender and forward curling black top hair on the top of the head, which is quite "unrestrained". There are small areas of white hair on the ears and cheeks, the skin of the face is pale pink, and there is a unique white beard on the jaw, which also makes the Nujiang Golden Monkey look a little "old". Their nose bones have degenerated, the nostrils are almost parallel to the face, and the "heavenly nose" is very obvious, so the Nujiang golden snub-nosed monkey is also known as the black nose monkey.

The Nujiang Golden Snub-nosed Monkey is the fifth golden snub-nosed monkey found in the world after the Sichuan Golden Snub-nosed Monkey, the Yunnan Golden Snub-nosed Monkey, the Qianjin Snub-nosed Monkey and the Vietnamese Golden Snub-nosed Monkey. In 2011, the first photo of the species was taken in The Town of Katama in Lushui City, Gaoligongshan National Nature Reserve, and in 2012, the research group of Academician Zhang Yaping of the Kunming Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the research group of Researcher Yu Li of Yunnan University conducted DNA testing, comparison and analysis of the collected feces, and determined that the population of golden snub-nosed monkeys found in Nujiang Prefecture was a new population of Chinese golden snub-nosed monkeys.

At present, only the Lushui Pipe Protection Branch of Gaoligong mountain national nature reserve has been found in China, and the population is about 200.

The Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences found that the common ancestor of the golden snub-nosed monkey first lived in the Tibetan Plateau region about 6.7 million years ago. Later, with the uplift of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the northern ancestral group and the Himalayan ancestral group were slowly formed. Subsequent northern ancestral groups and Himalayan ancestral groups were divided into Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkeys and Qianjin snub-nosed monkeys, as well as Yunnan golden snub-nosed monkeys and Nujiang golden snub-nosed monkeys 1.6 million years ago and 300,000 years ago, respectively.

Xiaopupu: Gaoligongshan National Nature Reserve - the largest nature reserve in Yunnan Province

Gaoligong mountain national nature reserve is a forest and wildlife type nature reserve, established in 1983 with the approval of the people's government of Yunnan Province, promoted to a national nature reserve in 1986, and included in the Scope of Gaoligong Mountain National Nature Reserve in 2000. In 2000, it joined the UNESCO World "Man and the Biosphere" program, in 2003, as the largest component area of the "Three Rivers Flowing Together", it was identified as a World Natural Heritage site by the United Nations World Heritage Committee, in 2006, it was listed by the State Forestry Administration as the first batch of 51 national forestry demonstration reserve construction units in The country, and in 2014 it joined the International Union of Nature Reserves.

It is also the largest nature reserve in Yunnan Province, of which 323,700 hectares are in Nujiang Prefecture, accounting for 4/5 of the total area of protected areas. The reserve consists of three sections of the north, middle and south that are not connected to each other, spanning the three counties (cities) of Gongshan, Fugong and Lushui, involving 13 townships.

The main objects of protection of the reserve are the vertical natural landscape of the forest dominated by the wet evergreen broad-leaved forest in Zhongshan, the warm and cold coniferous forest in the high mountain, the forest ecosystem with complete biodiversity, and the rare animals and plants and endemic species. It is known that there are 4303 species of seed plants in 210 families and 1086 genera, of which 434 are endemic to Gaoligong Mountain; 582 species of vertebrates in 36 orders and 106 families, of which 20 species are himalayan yew tree, Yunnan yew tree, long-reed magnolia, light-leaved tung tree, etc., 20 species of national second-level protected plants, 30 species of provincial-level protected plants; national first-class protected animals include hat-wearing langurs, Gaoligong white-browed gibbons, Gaoligong antelope, leopards, white-tailed rainbow pheasants, etc., and 47 species of national second-level protected animals. There are 5 species of animals protected at the provincial level.

The reserve is extremely rich in primates, including 8 species, including nujiang golden snub-nosed monkey, hooded langur, faye langur, short-tailed monkey, bear monkey, common macaque, Tibetan chief monkey and white-browed gibbon. In 2015, a unique species endemic to the Nu River was discovered. In 2017, a new record species of Chinese mammal was discovered, the red iguana, which added a new record for large and medium-sized mammal species in China. In 2018, the Asian golden cat, a national second-level protected animal, and the world's vulnerable animal, the clouded leopard, were recorded. In 2019, a new distribution of the rare and endangered plant Diantong population was discovered.
