On October 31, 1986, China's "Polar" research vessel began to sail around the world
At 10:00 a.m. on October 31, 1986, China's first polar scientific research vessel, the Polar, carried the members of China's third Antarctic scientific expedition to Qingdao Port. The "Polar" thus began its first voyage, which was also the first circumnavigation of the world in the history of China's navigation.
On February 15, 1985, China's first Antarctic expedition team established China's first scientific research station in Antarctica - the Great Wall Station.
Liu Xiaohan, a geological expert of China's first Antarctic expedition team, said that when the Great Wall Station was established that year, the "Xiangyanghong 10" scientific research vessel on which the expedition team took did not have the ability to break ice, which brought many challenges to the members of the expedition team.

Liu Xiaohan, a geological expert of China's first Antarctic scientific expedition team: At that time, the ship was completely a transport ship, that is, the environment in this cabin was also very poor, and when I felt that I couldn't do it, when I was going to faint, I ran to the deck to exercise desperately, desperately moved, moved myself, did gymnastics or something, push-ups.
The Expedition was converted from an anti-icing transport vessel equipped with advanced satellite navigation and communications equipment, as well as facilities such as helicopter platforms and hangars, for a total range of 26,700 nautical miles.
During this inspection, the team members also left a unique mark on the Great Wall Station. When they were about to leave the Antarctic, the expedition members specially cleaned up a wall and said to one of the female members of the expedition team, Chen Yadan, a teacher at the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts: "Painter! Leave us a picture! Looking at these warm-blooded men and these heroes of the motherland, Chen Yadan gladly agreed. On the wall of the Great Wall Station, she completed a 22-square-meter mural, in addition to the images of the team members and penguins, she also painted three suns in red, white and green.

Chen Yadan: Red is the down jacket of Antarctica, but I imagine it as, so the vast Antarctic continent, like a drop of hot blood dripping into the Antarctic continent, people who are not hot blood and full of passion and brave spirit do not dare to go. White is the vast snow field of Antarctica, which is like the pure eyes of a child. Green, because in Antarctica there is very little green, a small stone with a green lichen, that is very rare.
On May 17, 1987, the "Polar" successfully completed China's third Antarctic expedition mission and returned to Qingdao in victory, which was another unprecedented feat in China's maritime history.
During the more than 200-day voyage, the expedition team expanded and improved the Great Wall Station, making the comprehensive scientific expedition function of the Great Wall Station a big step forward. At the same time, on this round-the-world voyage, the expedition team conducted an investigation of the four items of gravity, marine physics, chemistry and biology on the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Ocean routes through which the "Polar" passed, and obtained a large amount of extremely valuable information and filled the gap in China's relevant fields.
