After the "double reduction policy", China is about to enter the era of "big language", and the importance of language is becoming increasingly prominent.
So have you ever wondered what a "language" is? Why is Chinese mainland the subject of teaching the mother tongue at the primary and secondary school stages not called "Chinese" or "Chinese language", but "language"?

The original meaning of "language" is "language and writing", which was later expanded into the common abbreviation of language, language and literature, and language and culture. But as a title for the discipline, there is a deeper meaning behind it.
After the Abolition of the Imperial Examination in the Qing Dynasty, a new style of school was opened, in which the subjects of ancient Chinese were taught, called "Guowen". After the May Fourth Movement, the vernacular language was advocated, and the teaching materials highlighted the characteristics of the spoken language, so the "Chinese language" was changed to "Chinese".
After the founding of New China, Ye Shengtao believed that "language" and "text" could not be abandoned, so he merged "Chinese" and "National Language" into one and renamed it "Language". This suggestion was adopted by the educational authorities and promoted to the whole country, and since then "language" has become the common name for the mother tongue curriculum in primary and secondary schools in China.
In other words, the word "language" was invented by Ye Shengtao.
Ye Shengtao, a writer, literary publisher, and social activist who has influenced generations, and his most important and resounding identity is "the greatest educator in modern China."
Ye Shengtao not only wrote China's first fairy tale "Scarecrow", but also drafted the "Primary School Language Curriculum Standards" and "Secondary School Language Curriculum Standards", so that New China has a language class, and has set an example for generations of primary and secondary school Language teachers.
Ye Shengtao's most basic educational philosophy is to lead by example, student-oriented and love education.
Teaching is to achieve the need not to teach.
The whole job of a teacher is to be a role model.
"What is education? To put it simply, just one sentence is to develop good habits. ”
The value of primary education lies in the foundation for primary school students to have a true and clear outlook on life throughout their lives.
These most reasonable sayings about education are all from ye Shengtao's mouth.
In March 1912, Ye Shengtao, who was not yet 18 years old, took the stage just after graduating from middle school and became a teacher at Suzhou Yanzimiao Primary School, thus starting the great cause he loved all his life.
Later, Ye Shengtao, who continued to study and make progress, became a famous writer and editor and publisher in the Republic of China period, and personally discovered and supported a large number of literary giants who later became famous in the literary world, such as Ba Jin, Mao Dun, Ding Ling, Dai Wangshu and so on. As a result, Ye Shengtao is also recognized as the most influential Bole in the history of modern Chinese literature.
But even after becoming famous, Ye Shengtao still did not forget his original intention, and spent his life practicing the promise when he first appeared on the podium - "Willing to keep his will, forever", from beginning to end, he regarded teaching and educating people as his most firm ideal, and he was also known as "forever primary school teacher".
The author's early acquaintance with Ye Shengtao at an early age is derived from the story of "four sugars", no need to scold, no need to reprimand, he only used four sugars, let the children who made mistakes repent, know the mistakes and change, and complete a textbook-level "love education". Yes, the best education is not to preach, but to be inspired.
Ye Shengtao through the late Qing Dynasty, Beiyang, the Republic of China, unswervingly committed to primary and secondary education, after the founding of New China is successively vice minister of education, the president of the People's Education Publishing House, the director of the China Museum of Literature and History and other important positions related to language education, he used his life to practice the duty of being a teacher, with love and wisdom to give every student the best education, becoming an eternal beacon in the hearts of thousands of language teachers.
On February 16, 1988, Ye Shengtao died in Beijing at the age of 94. The superstar falls, and the spirit lives on! May future generations be good teachers, follow the footsteps of the sages, and continue to devote themselves to the cause of education in China!
