Talc, calcium carbonate, glass beads, mica, wollastonite, who is more suitable for filling PA6?

The 2021 Green Mine Science and Technology Award (non-metallic ore, mineral material related fields) application work is organized and reviewed by the Zhongguancun Green Mine Industry Alliance Non-metallic Mine Special Committee, please pay attention to the V letter public number "Powder Technology Network".

Polyamide 6 (PA6) is one of the important engineering plastics, with high mechanical strength, good toughness, good electrical properties, wear resistance, oil resistance, weak acid and alkali resistance and a series of excellent properties.

At present, plastic modification is still dominated by co-mixing filling, and glass fiber reinforcement is the most extensive for the modification of PA6. Although the strength of glass fiber reinforced PA6 material is better, there are still poor fluidity, obvious anisotropy, product appearance is difficult to control, the requirements for injection molding process equipment are higher, and mineral filling PA6, low cost, moderate strength, good flow, anisotropy is smaller than glass fiber, the future with the generalization of PA6 mineral filling will be a large number of applications. Of course, the microscopic particle structure of different minerals is also different, and the impact on the performance of the material is also different.

Yang Wei et al. studied the performance effect of glass beads on PA6, and the yield strength was the largest when the content of glass beads was 10% to 15%. Liu Xiwen et al. studied the monoester verbatim maleate rare earth (RETM) coated CaCO3 filled PA6, and the water absorption rate of PA6 was reduced by about 56%, and the mechanical strength was improved.

Tang Liangzhong et al. studied the performance effect of glass beads on glass fiber filled PA6 composites, and the comprehensive performance of the material was better when the ratio of glass beads to glass fiber was 1:1~1:3. Gao Yanlei et al. studied the performance of mica/PA6 composites, with a fixed mica content of 9%, and the composite material had the best comprehensive performance when the mass fraction of MALEIC anhydride grafted PA6 was 6%.

Liu Lu et al. used a co-directional twin screw extruder, set the mass fraction of the filler to 30%, compared the effects of talc, calcium carbonate, glass beads, mica, wollastonite five kinds of industrial minerals on the properties of PA6 materials, the results showed:

  (1) The better the stiffness of PA6 composites, the better its heat resistance, talc with flake structure, mica can provide higher mechanical strength, more uniform size and heat resistance, of which mica as a whole is better than talc.

  (2) Glass beads and calcium carbonate with spherical structure have limited improvement in the strength and heat resistance of the material, calcium carbonate is conducive to the maintenance of the toughness of PA6 materials, and glass beads have the least impact on fluidity.

  (3) The processing of wollastonite may require special equipment, which is conducive to its structural retention, so as to exert its characteristics.

  (4) These 5 minerals have different characteristics, in the actual application of different use scenarios have different requirements for PA6 materials, according to these requirements can choose the right minerals, so that the material and the application to achieve a more matching degree.
