"Promising Me", as a popular variety show recently, ended with the signing of five "plus-size girls" by promoter Yang Tianzhen, which attracted widespread attention on the Internet. The first file of the whole network, "Plus Size Girl", the seemingly simple label is its highlight. In today's society where "white skinny" is still the mainstream aesthetic, this program allows us to see the many possibilities of beauty.
Many girls who participated in this variety show said that in their lives or work, they often received strange eyes from others because of their out-of-shape, and even ridiculed. This behavior can be summed up as body shaming.
Body shaming refers to the act of making any form of negative attitude and remark about another person's physical appearance by a single aesthetic standard. Under the long-term physical humiliation, our aesthetics are gradually deformed and alienated. A series of terms such as "A4" waist, chopstick legs, and right-angle shoulders have appeared one after another, and the requirements for women's figures have become increasingly strong.
In fact, the deformed aesthetic has a long history in China. First, foot binding, "Peacock Southeast Flying" has the sentence "Slender steps, exquisite and unparalleled in the world". The second is a thin waist, as evidenced by the poem "The king of Chu has a thin waist, and there are many starvations in the palace". The admiration for cherry mouth and willow waist is the source of deformed aesthetics. In addition, the propaganda and marketing of capital and mass media has contributed to the formation of deformed aesthetics. As a wealth password, Bai Thin is the source of traffic for emotional bloggers and video producers, and it is also the wealth of major businesses and platforms.
Remember the Uniqlo children's wear incident? After Uniqlo and Sanrio jointly launched a series of children's clothing, some wear bloggers have come to the store to try on punch cards, and published so-called "planting grass" posts on the platform, claiming that Uniqlo's children's clothing series can wear "BM" wind, setting off a wave of adults trying on children's clothing. Leaving aside the losses caused to the merchants, forcibly stuffing the adult's body into children's clothing, is not behind this behavior the deformed aesthetic concept at work?
Body shaming is the product of deformed aesthetics, and stopping body shaming must first correct the aesthetic concept of the public. "Promising Me" takes this opportunity to present the audience with a variety of possibilities of beauty, breaking the single mode of understanding of beauty under the inherent concept.
We affirm "plus-size girls" because of the confident beauty and true beauty they exude, and we criticize the aesthetics of white and thin because they cause people to be anxious about their bodies and make harmful behaviors. Identifying with "plus-size girls" is not advocating a body that is beyond the standard range. Beauty has nothing to do with being fat and thin, but we can't ignore health either. Say no to body humiliation, and may every girl be treated gently by the world.
