Recently, many Dongguan citizens have reported that the smell emitted by certain trees on both sides of the street is uncomfortable. Many people wonder where the "exotic" tree is sacred. Why can't the bad smelling trees be cut down? To this end, the reporter interviewed relevant experts of the Dongguan Municipal Urban Management Bureau to answer questions for netizens.
What exactly is a "heterogeneous" tree?
The "heterogeneous" tree is the sugar gum tree (also known as the "pot shelf"), which belongs to the oleander family. It was introduced to Dongguan City about the beginning of the 21st century, and the number of plantings is not counted. The annual flowering period is about summer and autumn, and the flowering period is about 20 days at night.
Is the "strange fragrance" of the pot tree poisonous?
According to the "Atlas of Higher Plants of China" published by the Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the whole plant of sugar gum tree can be used as an antimalarial, sweating, stomach medicine; the root bark can treat chronic bronchitis, and the milk can be used to make chewing gum raw materials. However, whether the floral fragrance is harmful is not expressed. Dr. Fan Qiang of Plant Taxonomy of Sun Yat-sen University said that the smell of the blossoming of sugar gum trees may be the reason why different people feel differently, and when the night comes to bloom at night, many people feel stuffy and uncomfortable. Through the extraction experiment of the gas component emitted by the sugar gum tree flower, no harmful components were found.
The odor emitted by the sugar gum tree flower is stronger, mainly because of the higher concentration of linalool oxide contained in it. According to the results published by the US Environmental Protection Agency experiments, linalool oxide is harmless to humans.
Why is the pot tree a street tree?
Because the sugar gum tree has strong resistance to air pollution, strong wind resistance, beautiful tree shape and good shade, it is a widely planted tree species in the southern region. In the early days of sugar gum trees, people did not know much about the smell of tree flowering, and after years of planting, some citizens put forward opinions on the flowering smell of trees. In 2007, the Urban Management Bureau issued the "Guidelines for the Selection of Urban Greening Tree Species in Dongguan City (Trial)", and the sugar gum tree is not used as a recommended tree species for street trees and park squares.
Why can't the pot tree be cut down directly?
The Dongguan Municipal Urban Management Bureau said that considering that a large number of sugar gum trees have been planted on municipal roads and residential areas in various towns and streets in Dongguan City, if they are uniformly replaced or cleaned up, it will cause greater financial pressure. It is recommended to control by technical means of pruning and spraying to control flowers, and the sugar gum trees in the residential community and the green space attached to the unit are handled by the property management unit, the owners' committee, and the management unit, and the local conditional upgrading and transformation of parks, roads, square green spaces can be gradually replaced, and it is recommended that the tree species should not be used in the future in the new greening project.
What will be planted in Dongguan street trees in the future?
In 2019, the Dongguan Urban Management Bureau issued the "Dongguan City Road Sidewalk Tree Species Selection and Planting Maintenance Management Guidelines", which stipulates that the pot rack is included in the urban road sidewalk trees in Dongguan City to use tree species cautiously, and actively take measures such as spraying to reduce pollen and inhibit the flowering time to reduce the impact. The regulations also clarify the principles of street tree selection, including safety, functionality, local conditions, suitable for trees, plant diversity, ecological efficiency, landscape and other principles, and recommend almonds, neem, autumn maple, human face, yin incense, neem and other tree species suitable for Dongguan.
