Walking into the Jiading Wax Plum Germplasm Resource Garden in Waigang Town, pale pink flowers dot the green leaves. Xiao Jia saw that this wax plum is very different from the winter wax plum that she usually sees: the flowers are pink, the flower buds are tender yellow, and the overall appearance is elegant and beautiful, which is somewhat similar to the lotus flower.
According to reports, this is the national second-level protected rare and endangered plant "summer wax plum", which is a special variety in the wax plum family, and the flowering period is from mid-to-late April to early June every year.
Another summer wax plum in the resource garden, the American wax plum, is also blooming, and the air is emitting a burst of floral fragrance. Looking for the taste, the red flowers are hidden between the green leaves, which is beautiful.
"American wax plum" is native to Virginia to Florida in the United States, its color is dark red, the petals are thin and long, the flower type is gorgeous, layer by layer, like a water lily, the flowers are much larger than the common winter wax plum. The flowering period of the "American Wax Plum" can last until September.
There are currently nearly 100 kinds of wax plums planted in the Jiading Wax Plum Germplasm Resource Garden, of which "Summer Wax Plum" and "American Wax Plum" were introduced in 2008, and after continuous improvement, the flowering period has been extended through pruning, shading and other measures. Because some of the wax plums in the resource garden are in the pruning period, they are not open to the public for the time being.
