Look for the Chinese grass warbler

Haikou, March 28 (Reporter Zhou Xiaomeng) Small body, short and round tail, tan feathers... This is a characteristic of the Chinese grass warbler. It is reported that at the end of the 19th century, the Chinese grass warbler was found in Wuzhi Mountain and Limu Mountain in Hainan, and now more than 110 years have passed, and there is no record of this bird in Hainan. Recently, the launching ceremony of the South China Grass Warbler Survey Plan in Hainan was held in Haikou, and the purpose of the survey plan is to grasp the distribution of the Chinese Grass Warbler in South China through field surveys.

The survey of the Chinese Grass Warbler in the Hainan area will be carried out in April, and the survey team composed of bird experts and bird watching enthusiasts from Kadoorie China Conservation and Hainan Bird Watching Association will search for the target habitat of the Chinese Grass Warbler in many areas of the province, and will use the sample line or sample point method to search for the survey according to the actual situation of the survey site. Since the record of the Chinese grass warbler in South China is very few, the results of this survey will be conducive to updating and sorting out the distribution and breeding status of the Chinese grass warbler in South China, collecting the threat to the Chinese grass warbler and its habitat, and providing a basis for updating the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

It is understood that in 2010, ornithologist Paul Leader and his team re-compared and analyzed all subspecies of the great grass warbler, and finally proposed that the large grass warbler that appeared in South China and the Indian subcontinent were actually two different species, and the large grass warbler distributed in South China was re-promoted to an independent species: the Chinese grass warbler. Since the bird's original threat level was "near threatened", the newly independent Chinese grass warbler may have a higher level of threat.
