2020, Xi'an's first boutique musical
As a project funded by the National Arts Fund in 2019, the musical "Mulan" has been auditioned in Xi'an last year, and has extensively listened to the opinions and suggestions of friends from all walks of life, carried out a new creation after carefully combing and summarizing, and carefully crafted the repertoire with the spirit of ten years of grinding a sword, and strived to create an excellent repertoire worthy of the times.
For example, in terms of stage presentation, the creators integrate the dramatic techniques of the East and the West, and show the tragic and joyful scenes in Mulan's life.
In terms of Cass, this time it chose the backbone of the new sound generation musical that sings, acts, dances and martial arts, among which Mulan is played by Miao Mengchu, who played an important role in the Shanghai Disney musical "The Lion King", the Chinese version of "The Moon and Sixpence" and "The Sound of Music", and Wang Yi, who has starred in many excellent musicals such as "Goddess Lake" and "Overlord Farewell". Huang Peng, a young actor in domestic musical theater, played He Yanwang in the play, and his main works include: the first edition of China's large-scale original musical "Rock West Wing", the musical "Humen Selling Cigarettes", the drama "Night and the Lamplighter" and so on. In the context of history, this musical "Mulan" not only has a deep excavation of the character, but also a high-quality singing section that is enough to make people unforgettable.
Therefore, we also interviewed Yang Xiaoqiang, a veteran musician, as well as Tang Aimin, a famous vocal performance educator, musical theater expert, and director of the singing section of the play, who has his own unique views on the music and singing section in the musical "Mulan".
3 Yang Xiaoqiang: Telling Chinese stories with Chinese style music
Veteran musician Yang Xiaoqiang
Veteran musician. Major works: "Great Qinling", "Back to Zhangye", "Hanshui Long Song" and so on.
Q1: As a well-known image in China, what "spirit" was injected into the musical "Mulan" in this creation so that the audience could accept it?
A: I really like the story of "Mulan", which represents the spirit of traditional Chinese culture on one level. Mulan's loyalty and filial piety are well known, and it is unimaginable that a girl served in the army for her father two thousand years ago, and it is unimaginable to abandon her official position and go into hiding after establishing a meritorious service, and this story is loved by people all over the world.
This time, "Mulan" was put on the stage again in the form of a musical, which was a challenge for each of our main creative staff. After many discussions, the director determined that the core spirit of "Mulan" was "who said that women are inferior to men", which made me understand the direction and temperament of music:
Use real emotions, techniques, and use tones with Chinese characteristics to express the most authentic and grounded Mulan
。
Q2: The story of Mulan has a long aftertaste of classical rhyme and national color, so in this musical version, does it also take into account the background of "Chinese style" in terms of instrumentation?
A: Because the creation is based on "Mulan", the musical "Mulan" has a good textual foundation, which retains the essence of the story. Therefore, in music, I want to maintain the style consistent with the text, and use representative ethnic instruments for atmosphere rendering, such as pipa, erhu, na, bamboo flute and other Chinese instruments have their own unique charm. Percussion music such as chinese drums can better reflect a sense of strength. The soft music in the play makes a lot of use of heavy metal, rock and other musical elements.
Personally, I think that the Chinese style is not to write melodies as five-liter or folk minor keys and so on. Instead, it uses Chinese tone and charm to add color to the work and pave the way for the emotion of the work. The fusion of Chinoiserie and pop music is the unique style of this play.
Q3: The classics and popularity of a musical are always inseparable from the beautiful singing segments in it, can you tell in advance which singing segments in the play need to pay special attention to when appreciating, and what is worth brushing two or three brushes?
A: Music is part of the musical that moves the audience, and many of the singing sections of "Mulan" use Chinese national instruments to lay out and sublimate emotions, such as the erhu in the singing section of "Cold Rain Flying" in the play, which gives people a desolate feeling, and the na na used in "That Year" in the play is a kind of strength, a kind of horn-like encouragement. The one used in the play is a kind of vicissitudes, a kind of longing. "Serving in the Army for Her Father" is a song section in which Mulan resolutely made a decision after knowing that her father was old and could not go on the battlefield, and said goodbye to her father.
Many of these singing segments I personally like, I believe the audience will also like, many of the singing segments in the play can be listened to a few times, from which you will definitely find your own shadow.
Q4: How did you feel during the process of creating the musical "Mulan"?
The creators and actors of this play are great. The director's excavation and portrayal of the characters is very profound, and the actors' performances are real and emotional, and I think they can definitely impress the audience.
All the actors of the Mulan crew are serious and dedicated, united and forge ahead, just to dedicate a high-quality musical to the audience.
Of course, stage art must have regrets. After the premiere, we will definitely listen to the suggestions of all parties, continue to polish and revise, and strive to be the best.
4 Tang Aimin: The musical singing segment conveys the core of the drama
Singing director Tang Aimin
Renowned vocal performance educator and musical theatre expert. Representative guiding works: "Journey to the West", "You Are My Loneliness", "White Night" and so on.
Q1: Music is actually another way of expressing emotions, so what do you think the music in the musical "Mulan" conveys to the audience?
A: In a standard musical, the role of music and singing is very obvious - it can express and enhance emotional catharsis, strengthen and complete dramatic actions, evoke atmosphere and emotions, and these words alone cannot do. In a successful musical, the music itself provides key dramatic and character clues that actors must learn how to decipher. The singing segment exists to develop the story, volatilize emotions and highlight the theme, and the musical and song elements in the musical must have a dramatic role, in short, convey the core of the drama through the musical singing segment.
"Mulan" has 23 musical segments in the whole play, each of which is the inner monologue and emotional expression of the characters, and they appear at the twists and turns of each drama plot. For example, Hua Mulan's "Believe in Myself" and "I Have My Dream" show Mulan's heroic character and firm belief, and finally make a feat that shocks the century: serving in the army for her father and defending the country!
Q2: What is the difference between the singing segments in the musical and the ordinary songs? How do you get the actors to integrate the emotions of the characters through music?
A: My job is to guide the actors in their efforts to achieve a smooth transition from script to music and singing segments. Songs in musical theaters can play a dramatic role in several ways, where identifying characters is the primary job. Because there are many different characters in the play, there are many different types of sounds. We have to choose the appropriate character voice according to the role. Each character in "Mulan" has different vocal characteristics: Mulan's voice line has a wide range of voices, rigid and soft; Bao Renjiu has the brightness and lyricism of a tenor, which is the voice of a young man...
In the rehearsal of the singing segment, we will split a song and refine it into small parts for training: from each lyric to each word; from the pitch of the musical sentence to the subtle rhythm; from the vocal training to the word training; from the subtle tone to the appropriate expression; from the change of strength to the preparation of the mood; how the singing segment begins to how it ends........ Musicals are "all performed through songs", and the ultimate goal of our chorus rehearsals is what the characters need to look like, not just singing.
What do you think? Do you particularly want to hear the music in the play? Then, from October 23rd to 25th at 19:30, we did not see each other at the scene of the musical "Mulan"!
