He was a famous musician in the early years of the new century, with a high artistic talent, not only good at singing, but also proficient in instruments such as reeds, karmic drums, and even composing music, so he was deeply favored by Tang Xuanzong, often in and out of the door of the magnates, and had contacts with many poets at that time.
Wang Wei's famous five-word poem, "May the king pick up more, this thing is the most lovely" was written to remember him.

The Tang people prefer to call each other by family ranking, for example, Li Bai is Li Twelve, Du Fu is Du Er, and Bai Juyi is White Twenty-Two.
Dong Tinglan is the eldest in the family and is called "Dong Da".
According to historical records, Dong Tinglan was good at playing the guqin and enjoyed a high reputation at that time.
The poet Li Ji praised his piano skills in the poem "Listening to Dong Da playing Hu Zi and Sending Words to the House", which was also selected for the "Three Hundred Poems of Tang Dynasty".
The most well-known is the farewell poem "Don Dong Da" written by Gao Shi for him, which was selected as a primary school textbook and almost everyone can memorize it.
Thousands of miles of yellow clouds and daylight, the north wind blows geese and snow.
Don't worry about the road ahead, don't know yourself, no one in the world knows the king.
In the ancient times when transportation was inconvenient, turning around was the end of the world, and a parting was a lifetime, so many farewell poems were very sad and sad.
Of course, there are also many generous and elegant works, such as Wang Bo's "Confidant in the Sea, If the End of the World is Nearby", Su Shi's "Life is like a reverse journey, I am also a pedestrian".
The same is true of Gao Shi's "Don Dong Da".
The first two sentences of the poem use dark clouds, the north wind, the flying snow, and the wild geese, which together form a dark and cold winter twilight map.
In such an environment, the two are about to separate, and the sorrow in their hearts can be imagined.
However, the poet did not follow this desolate atmosphere to express his parting, but instead opened a stroke and launched "Mo worries about the road ahead and does not know himself, who in the world does not know the king", which suddenly pulls people back from the miserable and tragic parting atmosphere.
These two bold words elevate poetry to a realm that is difficult for ordinary people to reach, and even after a thousand years, it is still inspiring.
After reading this poem, many people can't help but wonder what kind of person "Dong Da" in the poem is? It was possible for Gao Shi to respect love so much.
According to historical records, Dong Tinglan was deeply appreciated by Fang Zhen, the prime minister at the time, because of his superb piano skills, and the relationship between the two was like Boya and Zhong Zi period.
The late Tang Dynasty poet Cui Jue has a poem cloud "seven strings on the five tones of cold, this art knows the sound since ancient times." Only Henan Fang Ci Law has always pitied Dong Tinglan."
Later, Fang Zhen lost power and was impeached and dismissed, one of which was that the doorman Dong Tinglan accepted bribes.
In order to intercede for Fang Zhen, Du Fu also angered Tang Suzong.
Because of the "Fang Zhen Incident", many people think that Dong Tinglan is a person with empty piano skills but bad conduct.
But is that really the case?
Xue Yijian, another organist of the Tang Dynasty, commented on him this way: "Tinglan is not a prince, has been a forester for sixty years, looks ancient and has a distant heart, and is idle and harmonious", that is to say, in Xue Yijian's eyes, Dong Tinglan should be a high priest who is indifferent to fame and fortune, does not admire the powerful, and has a hidden style.
Moreover, his masterpiece of piano music, "Yi Zhen", reflects his Taoist life in the mountains of "widowhood to nourish the heart, rest and cultivate the truth".
It is hard to imagine that such a pure-hearted, intoxicated and elegant person would trap his confidant for the sake of things outside his body.
It is not so much that Fang Zhen was convicted of Dong Tinglan, but rather that he implicated Dong Tinglan.
I prefer to believe that Dong Tinglan is a gentleman who is indifferent to fame and fortune, so as to live up to Gao Shi's "Mo worries about the road ahead and ignorance of himself, who in the world does not know the king."
