Plan early

Ma Yu, who is nearly 50 years old, has been engaged in landscaping for more than 20 years, and he knows the significance of preparing for the rain. Because most of the venues of the Fair are distributed in the sand wasteland outside the Dunhuang Oasis, planting greenery has become an indispensable and important part of the preparations for the Fair. Since the spring of 2015, Ma Yu and all the cadres and workers of the Garden and Forestry Bureau have traveled all over the city and established 7 large seedling reserve bases. Take the initiative to dock with planning and construction units to grasp the number of seedlings required for greening and beautification as early as possible.

In December 2015, the environmental beautification work of the Fair was officially launched. The Dunhuang Municipal Bureau of Gardens and Forestry immediately set up a seedling procurement team composed of garden engineers and external greening technicians, went to Jiuquan, Zhangye, Wuwei, Pingliang and other places in the province, as well as the surrounding provinces and regions of Shanxi, Ningxia, Henan, Xinjiang and other provinces and regions to investigate the storage information of seedlings in various places, and in accordance with the principles of similar climate to Dunhuang, good seedling formation, healthy growth, and low price cost, inspected and selected seedling suppliers, negotiated prices, and determined the supply time and storage and transportation methods of seedlings. The procurement team lasted a month and traveled more than 8,000 kilometers to finalize the seedling supply plan before the Spring Festival in 2016.

"Very" work

The beautification and greening of the venue of the Cultural Fair is different from the previous urban beautification and greening, in addition to the tight construction period and poor soil conditions, the most headache for Ma Yu is that there is no complete time period and no forming site. As the most downstream supporting construction unit, if you follow the convention, wait for the upstream construction unit to finish and then enter, I am afraid that "the flowers are thanked".

On the basis of doing a good job in seedlings, technology, equipment, team preparation, and other work, after consultation, Ma Yu and several members of the team stared at the construction site separately, staring at the empty space to grab time. Everyone goes to work at least an hour in advance every day to wait at the construction site, as long as they see a suitable time for green construction, they immediately mobilize the team to dig sand for soil and lay pipelines, and construction at night has become a common thing. It is to make full use of these fragmented time to grab the construction period for the smooth planting of greenery. Time is the countdown figure in the hearts of Ma Yu and his comrades-in-arms, since the Spring Festival this year, everyone basically did not have much rest, let alone weekends, and even the day of the week could not be remembered. But to everyone's relief, they finally ran ahead of the countdown.

Sow green at the wrong time

In the spring, willows were planted in summer to harvest wheat, but in 2016, Ma Yu had to plant willows in the middle of summer. The construction period of the venue determines that most of this year's beautification and greening cannot be found in the Qingming Festival. Planting trees in the middle of summer, coupled with the beautification of tree species around the venue, are mostly thick trees, and the survival rate of trees is the most worrying for Ma Yu and the cadres and workers of the Garden bureau. In order to ensure that the planted trees see green, the staff uses soil ball transplantation, root soaking rooting powder, branches and leaves sprayed with anti-transpirants, hanging nutrient solution for each larger tree, supplemented by trunks and grass belts, canopy shading and other technical measures, daily inspection, timely watering spray, like taking care of the baby, carefully looking after these trees, and finally in exchange for the extremely high survival rate of planting green at the wrong time.

This year, the Dunhuang Municipal Bureau of Gardens and Forestry completed a project volume of 150 million yuan, more than the sum of the past 10 years, with a total of more than 1.2 million square meters of greening and beautification, more than 500,000 trees and shrubs, more than 100 large and small node beautifications, and the decoration of Dunhuang City as particularly beautiful, which was praised and affirmed by all parties.
