The 181st Division captured the 35th Regiment of the U.S. 3rd Division on the tandong front. At first, Wang Jinshan asked the 60th Army to begin its retreat north on the evening of the 23rd, but soon ordered the 60th Army to block the enemy and cover the transfer of 8,000 seriously wounded, and Wei Jie, the commander of the 60th Army, had to give the task to the only unit in hand, the 180th Division. The division commander Zheng Qigui and the acting political commissar Wu Chengde did not make a decisive decision on the issue of whether to transfer or stick to it, which became one of the reasons for the tragedy.
At this time, the 180th Division, as in the southern Anhui Incident, fell into the strange circle of "meeting and studying", deputy division commander Duan Longzhang and chief of staff Wang Zhenbang suggested concentrating troops to break through, and Zheng Qigui and Wu Chengde insisted on carrying out orders to block the enemy army.
When the American army besieged, in the face of the superior coalition forces with well-armed equipment and absolute superiority in air superiority, the heavily besieged 180th Division was unable to return to the sky, but the heroic and tenacious resistance of the 180th Division bought time for the 63rd Army to organize a defensive position in Tieyuan.
