In June this year, the Wuhan Cane Head Puppet Show was included in the fifth batch of national intangible cultural heritage representative projects. Subsequently, the Wuhan People's Art Theater was announced as a project protection unit. Tian Qingquan, general manager of Wuhan Renyi, said that "the art of wuhan cane puppets will continue to be carried forward".
"The Legend of The Arhat" tells the story of the little monk Luo Yaoluo, who learned to control his emotions, meditate and meditate through many tribulations, learned to use his brain to think of ways, learned to practice what he preached, overcame difficulties, and finally became a strong, brave, intelligent and wise little practitioner, and won the title of "Contemplating Arhat". Compared with the old version of "The Legend of Luohan", the new version of the story revolves more closely around the protagonist, unifying legend and watchability, showing the growth of the characters. The play aims to praise the beautiful, lash out at the ugly, and carry forward the traditional virtues of the Chinese nation such as sincerity, friendliness, and helpfulness.
The old version of "The Legend of Luohan" is the first large-scale original puppet show created and performed by Wuhan People's Art Theatre in 2016 after it was transferred to enterprises, and its performance has opened a new chapter in the development of Wuhan cane puppets. Tian Qingquan said that the theater reorganized the main creative team to create a new version of "The Legend of Luohan", and strived to polish it into a puppet drama work with good ideological, artistic and ornamental qualities.
According to reports, the new version of "The Legend of Luohan" will make a lot of use of film techniques to break through the previous single form and old-fashioned puppet stage performance; perfectly combine the traditional skills of Chinese puppet stage performance with emotional philosophy, so that the audience can resonate and think; use a large number of symbolic expression techniques to poetically show the stage characters and characters' hearts, combine realism and freehand, and combine reproduction and performance.
