author:Learn scum Shrek

Published in 1933, Midnight is Mao Dun's masterpiece. The novel takes Shanghai in the 1930s as the stage for the activities of the characters, takes the invasion of imperialist financial capital into China, the warlords in the central plains of China, and the uprising in the agricultural areas led by the Communist Party of China as the social background, and shows the plight of the Chinese national capitalist Wu Sunfu in various contradictions and conflicts on a broad historical picture. In terms of national industry, he annexed the silk factory, expanded its scale, and at the same time disintegrated and suppressed the resistance of the workers; in the novel, the Chinese national capitalist Wu Sunfu invests in the bond market and competes with the comprador capitalist Zhao Botao. In the countryside, his pawnshop Qianzhuang in his hometown of Shuangqiao suffered losses due to peasant riots; in terms of family, funerals and marriages were decided by him, showing that he had an authoritarian side in the family.

In "Midnight", Wu Sunfu's failure was caused by the collusion of comprador capital and national finance capital, which also shows that Chinese society in the 1930s was still in the stage of semi-colonial and semi-feudal society.
