Raheem Sterling hopes Jack Grellish's joining City will help him improve his goalscoring count.

The 26-year-old is looking forward to linking up with England teammate Gregleish at club level in the £100 million move to Etihad Stadium by former Aston Villa captain.

Sterling scored just 14 goals in all of Guardiola's games last season – 17 fewer than in 2019/20 – but, alongside Greliches, he is looking for more this time.

Sterling said: "They signed a great player who wanted to prove himself at the highest level. "I don't think there's a better club for him to try to do that.

"He's a player who always wants the ball, he has good space and he's creative.

"He's added another creative player to this team and I'm very excited about that, so hopefully he can add more goals to my goals.

"It's always a good thing when you add good players to your team. I believe he's a player who can really have a great career here. ”

Sterling's form has slipped last season, but he was one of England's best players during their summer spell in Euro 2020 finals.

Having rested for some time since then, he now feels refreshed and ready for his new Premier League.

Sterling said he was "eager" to fully recover his health after the summer vacation

Sterling said: "It's great to be back. The first few days were a bit rusty but it was great to come back. I had a great week or so of summer vacation and now I would love to get back to the training ground.

"It's exciting and it's a season I'm very much looking forward to. I've focused all my energy and attention on getting into this season and honestly, I'm really looking forward to it. ”

Champions City will begin their defence at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. Sterling said: "We enjoyed [being champions], but it's done, it's done. Last season is over, so looking back at last season, we're not going to get another trophy this year.

'We know what we have to do, we have to come forward quickly in the league and play our football well, that's the most important thing.
