Lv Xiaohe: "The Spirit of Shi Chuanxiang" cannot forget the series of interviews on "Spark of Fire"

On the occasion of the centenary of the founding of the party, the Beijing News launched a series of interviews on "Sparks of Fire - The Image of Party Members in Film and Television". Assembling three generations of actors, old, middle and young, they have all been associated with party members because of their roles, baptized by the spirit of party members, and thus formed a lifelong belief in self-conscious pursuit, strict self-discipline on the road of performance, and forge ahead.

Spanning a hundred years of time and reliving the years of burning passion, through the narration of the actors, we try to restore that period of glory, with the establishment of the image of excellent party members, and carry forward the spirit of a new generation of party members.

In the movie "Shi Chuanxiang", Lu Xiaohe restored the working state of Shi Chuanxiang, a dung panning worker.

On October 26, 1959, at the scene of the National "Heroes' Meeting" held in Beijing, then President Liu Shaoqi shook the hand of Shi Chuanxiang, an advanced producer in the country, and said: "You tao da dung is a people's servant, and I am also a people's servant when I am the chairman, which is just a difference in the revolutionary division of labor." Shi Chuanxiang said excitedly: "I will always listen to the party's words and be a dung digger for a lifetime." Since then, the deeds of the dung-digging workers who "would rather one person be dirty in exchange for ten thousand families are clean" have been well-known throughout the country.

In 2003, 28 years after Shi Chuanxiang's death, the film "Shi Chuanxiang" held a premiere ceremony in his hometown of Qihe County, Shandong Province. The film takes Shi Chuanxiang's life story as the main line, showing the collision of the values of three generations, and actor Lu Xiaohe recreates Shi Chuanxiang's ordinary but shining life in the film. In Lu Xiaohe's view, with the progress of society, there are no simple toilets and no fecal workers, but the spirit of the movie "Shi Chuanxiang" and Shi Chuanxiang still has enlightening significance for society, "There are a large number of such workers in our country, including sanitation workers and volunteer workers, doing good things in obscurity. Today's young people should see such a spirit. ”

Shi Chuanxiang

(September 20, 1915 - May 19, 1975)

Shi Chuanxiang was born in 1915 to a poor peasant family in Dahuzhuang, Zhaoguan Town, Qihe County, Shandong Province. In 1930, at the age of 15, Shi Chuanxiang fled to Beijing and was forced by life to become a dung digger. After the founding of New China, Shi Chuanxiang entered the cleaning team of the former Chongwen District of Beijing. For more than a decade, he went door to door to collect dung and dirt, with little spare time. Over time, he not only became a friend respected and trusted by the people, but also won the respect of the whole society.

In 1956, Shi Chuanxiang joined the Communist Party of China, was elected a member of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in 1958, and was named a national model worker the following year.

On May 19, 1975, Shi Chuanxiang died of illness in Beijing at the age of 60. In 2009, Shi Chuanxiang was elected as one of the "100 Chinese Things That Have Touched Since the Founding of New China" and won the title of "The Most Beautiful Strivers".

Receiving the invitation from "Shi Chuanxiang", he agreed without hesitation

What impressed Lu Xiaohe the most was that Shi Chuanxiang always cleaned people up manure rain or shine; the stool in the toilet overflowed, but he was still not afraid of getting dirty and tired. After the shopping, he will also help everyone repair the toilet.

In 1952, Shi Chuanxiang joined the cleaning team of the former Chongwen District of Beijing. At that time, there were many bungalows in old Beijing, with large population density, shallow pits, and feces often overflowing. But no matter how rotten the outside of the pit is and how deep the bottom of the pit is, Shi Chuanxiang will always find ways to clean it up. He dug spoon by spoon, lifted can by can, carried bucket by bucket, scooped up dung every day, and grinded calluses on his right shoulder. This story was recorded in the language textbooks of the time, and it was also the first impression of Shi Chuanxiang by Lu Xiaohe, who was born in the 1940s.

When Liu Shaoqi received Chuanxiang, Lu Xiaohe was 14 years old. He still remembers that the reception of the dung workers by the central leadership caused great repercussions in society, and the news briefings throughout the country were overwhelming. "[Shi Chuanxiang] has taken deep roots in my heart." Therefore, when the movie "Shi Chuanxiang" issued an invitation to Lu Xiaohe, he almost did not hesitate to take over the role at the age of Hua Jia.

It has been reported that when Lu Xiaohe shoots every new film, he will first experience life in real scenes. Chopping firewood, burning fires, doing farm work, repairing tools, sending troops to practice shooting, he was almost everything. Before filming "Shi Chuanxiang", Lu Xiaohe visited Shi Chuanxiang's wife and his children in his home many times. Trying to understand in more detail from their stories how Shi Chuanxiang came to Beijing, how he scavenged in Beijing, and what happened when he was digging dung.

What impressed Lu Xiaohe the most was that Shi Chuanxiang always cleaned people up manure rain or shine; the stool in the toilet overflowed, but he was still not afraid of getting dirty and tired. After the shopping, he will also help everyone repair the toilet. Shi Chuanxiang's spirit also affected his family, and his children told Lu Xiaohe that their father had told them that in the future, they would all go to dig dung, they would all take this road, and honestly serve the people. Although there is no vigorous life experience in the family, it is this kind of life details and the spirit of serving the people from beginning to end that have greatly helped Lu Xiaohe to shape the character.

I still don't know that I act like that

After the movie was released, Lü Xiaohe once again visited Shi Chuanxiang's hometown of Qihe County, Shandong, and as soon as he entered the village, many elderly people flocked out and recognized Lü Xiaohe as the actor of Shi Chuanxiang in the movie.

Lu Xiaohe has starred in many works with the theme of the main theme, such as Liang Sanxi in the movie "Wreath Under the Mountain", Peng Dehuai in "The Great March - Liberation of the Great Northwest", etc. In the interview, he also mentioned the influence of main theme works such as "Kong Fansen" and "Liu Hulan" on himself. From the performance point of view, Lu Xiaohe believes that the greater the character, as long as the actor is more like the god, the audience can easily be brought in. However, it is not easy to play ordinary grassroots party members such as Shi Chuanxiang, Jiao Yulu and Kong Fansen, "First of all, it is necessary to restore the true ideological quality of the character, his spirit, his heart, and his quality, and also let the audience feel kind and real, rather than posing." ”

In the movie "Garland Under the Mountain", Lu Xiaohe played the company commander Liang Sanxi.

In the movie "Shi Chuanxiang", Lu Xiaohe firmly hid himself behind the character. In life, Shi Chuanxiang has no habitual movements, that is, back dung, dung, in order to make his hands throw up like a real dung digger, Lu Xiaohe has visited the Beijing Sanitation Bureau many times, and read a large number of texts and video materials recording the work status of Chinese dung workers in the last century. In the crew, even without his role, Lu Xiaohe always carried a heavy bucket of props and dung, wandering back and forth in the courtyard, practicing "carrying dung".

In 1958, the Beijing Municipal People's Government, in order to show respect for the labor of cleaners, not only stipulated that their wages were higher than those of other industries, but also replaced the rudder trucks that delivered manure with cars. After the improvement of the means of transport, Shi Chuanxiang reasonably calculated the working hours, changed the previous large class of seven people to a small class of five people, and led the whole class from 50 barrels per person per class to 80 barrels, and he carried 90 barrels per class. In the movie, the bridge section of the dung truck being changed to a car was also restored, "At that time, Shi Chuanxiang was particularly excited, and it was not easy to play such a feeling well. ”

Stills from the movie "Shi Chuanxiang"

Until now, Lu Xiaohe didn't know that the portrait of Shi Chuanxiang he played was not like. Later, he visited Shi Chuanxiang's hometown of Qihe County, Shandong Province again, and as soon as he entered the village, many elderly people flocked out and recognized Lu Xiaohe as the actor of Shi Chuanxiang in the movie. "My thoughts are not as noble as Shi Chuanxiang's, but the image at least meets the requirements of god-like in the work."

"Sincerity to people" is enshrined as the code of life

In Lu Xiaohe's view, those who educate people must first be educated, and actors should also follow this principle. If you want to play a model figure with the representatives of the times, you must first be touched by this role and learn his spirit.

Recalling this movie released nearly twenty years ago, Lu Xiaohe still remembers the scene that touched her most deeply, when Shi Chuanxiang braved the rain to collect dung for an old lady's house and help her repair the toilet. When the old lady was distressed, she brought him a porcelain jar of hot water from the house, and there was white sugar in it. But by the time the old man came out, Shi Chuanxiang was already gone. She said in tears at the door, "He didn't even take a sip of water." ”

This scene is in stark contrast to the previous plot. It was the old society before 1949, and the dung digger was the most despised profession. Once, when Chuanxiang wanted to beg for water and drink after digging up the dung, others thought he was dirty and smelly, so he took a broken bowl for the cat and filled him with a bowl of cold water, and there were even a few stinky fish bones floating in the water.

From "dung flowers" to "sanitation workers", in Lu Xiaohe's view, this strong contrast between the old and new societies reflects Shi Chuanxiang's gratitude to the party and the importance he attaches to the people as an ordinary laborer. "From being an oppressed excrement picker to later becoming a model worker, he was just an ordinary person, a dung digger, Shi Chuanxiang has always held a grateful mentality, and every day he only thinks about one thing in his mind - to serve the people. I also want to show his simple feelings for the party. ”

In Lu Xiaohe's view, those who educate people must first be educated, and actors should also follow this principle. If you want to play a model figure with the representative of the times, you must first be moved by this role, and you must learn his spirit in order to perfectly shape and convey it.

Lu Xiaohe also enshrined Shi Chuanxiang's spirit of "sincerely being sincere to people and loving the cause" as the criterion for his life, "After playing the image of a party member, his own quality should also be improved and leapt, which is what it should be." ”
