The grumpy "Lei Gong" is a very warm person
The first time he read the script, Hu Jun looked at the first 130,000-word version, "very thick, after reading it, I know that it is very rich, and it will definitely be a huge production." In the film, he played the gun platoon leader "Lei Gong" Lei Suisheng, the 17th soldier of the Seventh Company, and his comrades-in-arms affectionately called him "Lei Dad". After getting this role, Hu Jun made a biography of a character: "Lei Gong" is such a big man, either from northeast China or Shandong, the tiger's back bear waist is like a bear, and the fierce tiger does not have the upper hand in fighting with him. He was particularly experienced on the battlefield, very old, a bit like the "father" of the seven companies of soldiers.
In one scene, in order to protect Wanli, played by Yi Qianxi, "Lei Gong" used a belt to smoke Qianli (Wu Jing) and Yu Congrong (Li Chen) and others over and over again. "'Lei Gong' got angry, no matter who you are, pick up the belt and smoke, specially protect the calf", Hu Jun liked this scene very much. There is also a scene about Wanli being hungry, lying down and nibbling on the bark, and "Lei Gong" throws the bark away and gives him grass roots. Hu Jun feels that these details reflect the warmth of the role of "Lei Gong", unfortunately, these two scenes are not put into the main film in the end.

That scene had hundreds of explosion points, and the "clanging" next to it was very shocking, and now in retrospect, it still makes Hu Jun moved.
In the original script, before dying, "Lei Gong" said to the soldiers of the Seventh Company that he should take the Seventh Company well and strive to bring everyone home... Lots of lines, a bit full. Hu Jun consulted with director Xu Ke and condensed it into two lines, one was "Hurt me to death", the other was "Don't leave me here alone", and sang a song "Yimeng Mountain Minor".
Hu Jun's understanding is that when the whole car hits "Lei Gong", what is his first reaction? It just hurts. In the moment before his death, he really wanted to go home, did not want to leave himself in a foreign country, completely subconsciously, and "Don't leave me here alone" also said the voice of the volunteer soldiers who left their bones on the Korean battlefield. Hu Jun felt that these two lines accurately conveyed the true thoughts of a veteran who was about to die.
The director felt that it was not enough to end so cruelly. Hu Jun thought of the song "Yimeng Mountain Minor". At the beginning, many scenes were filmed to explain that "Lei Gong" was a Yimeng Mountain man, and they were all cut. Only one line from Wu Jing was retained: "Anyway, there is no one in your hometown of Yimeng Mountain, so you can live with me." Therefore, Hu Jun had been communicating with Wu Jing at that time, and he must tell the hometown of "Lei Gong", otherwise it would be a little strange to suddenly sing "Yimeng Mountain Minor" before he died, and there should be a foreshadowing in front.
As a soldier, "Lei Gong" can leave everything behind on the battlefield
Hu Jun did not portray "Lei Gong" as a hero who was not afraid of death, and when "Lei Gong" drove to the enemy camp, he already knew that he could not live. Why did he do that? Because as a soldier, everything can be left behind on the battlefield. But before he died, he returned to himself, felt physical pain, and wanted to go home.
