Today, we are talking about the story of Yang Guangyu, a senior Kuomintang general who was captured in November 1947.
This General Yang, born in 1903, entered the first phase of the Whampoa Military Academy in 1924, and then served as a company commander, battalion commander, deputy regimental commander, regimental commander, deputy division commander, and division commander in the Kuomintang army. In 1939, Yang Guangyu was awarded the rank of major general in the army and served as the deputy commander of the 16th Army.
During the Liberation War, Yang Guangyu served in Luo Lirong's Third Army as deputy commander of the Third Army. In October 1947, in the Battle of Qingfengdian in Hebei, the heavily besieged Third Army was annihilated and captured by more than 11,000 people, and senior generals such as Luo Lirong and Yang Guangyu became prisoners of the People's Liberation Army.

Luo Lirong is the second phase of Huangpu, and his thinking has changed after the heart-to-heart conversation of fellow Nie Rongzhen. However, Yang Guangyu of the First Phase of Huangpu was stubborn in his thinking, and at the beginning of his capture, all he thought about was suicide. After being captured, Luo, Yang and others were detained in the detention center of the Security Department of the North China Military Region.

During his imprisonment, Yang Guangyu, who was bent on death, lit the quilt and wanted to set himself on fire. The torch burned Yang's legs, and the guards who found him in time put out the fire and saved him. In view of his behavior, on the one hand, the CADRES criticized him and actively organized rescue and treatment and was taken care of by special personnel to do ideological work for him.
The meticulous care of the People's Liberation Army has changed Yang Guangyu's thinking, and he has also shed tears and said that he will actively reform and become a new person. But after all, the conditions were limited during the war, and in the end, Yang Guangyu's legs suppurated and had to be amputated.

Later, Yang Guangyu and others were transferred to Gongdelin for transformation. During this period, Yang Guangyu had to take crutches. In 1966, Yang Guangyu was pardoned and later served in the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. During his time in Gongdelin, Yang Guangyu's contemporary alumnus, Chen Geng, who was also a Huangpu Phase I, also visited them personally. Once, witnessing the current situation of his old classmates, Chen Geng said with emotion, "Old classmates, it's a pity that you have these legs."

Chen Geng is a native of Xiangxiang, Hunan, while Yang Guangyu is a native of Liling, Hunan, and the two are alumni or fellow villagers of the same period. It is worth saying that Yang Dezhi, a senior commander of the People's Liberation Army who commanded the Battle of Qingfengdian, was also a Hunan native.
