A fragment of Gaocheng Middle School study

Senior 19 student Yu Qingtian

In the summer of 1961, I graduated from a rural junior high school in Wuji County, Hebei Province, and was admitted to the 19th class of Gaocheng Middle School. At that time, the three counties of Gaocheng, Wuji and Luancheng were merged, and they were also called Gaocheng County, and Gaocheng Middle School was considered to be the best middle school in the county. Since then, I have been studying for three years in high school.

<h1 class = "pgc-h-center-line" > (i</h1>).

My family is in Gaoling Village in the north of Wuji County, and the ground north of the village is next to the boundary of Dingzhou, more than 60 miles away from Gaocheng Middle School. Hike to school, to walk a day. Cycling, ditches, ridges, country lanes, also take hours. Fortunately, in the residential school, I often return home once a month or two.

Because I am an agricultural household, the school does not provide commercial grain. Every year, I would exchange my own grain for food stamps at the commune grain station for my schooling. For this reason, the parents and sisters-in-law are very hard. Once, I used Sunday to go home to get food stamps and food bills, and it rained non-stop, so I had to brave the rain to return to school. The road was windy and rainy, and even the umbrella clothes were all soaked. When I walked to the south of Haozhuang Village, it was completely dark, and I couldn't see my five fingers, so I had to stay in a cattle pen of a production team, and the old man who fed the cattle took me in. The next day, just after dawn, I rushed to school again, but fortunately, I returned to school before class.

<h1 class= "pgc-h-center-line" > (ii</h1>).

At that time, the three years of difficulties were not over, and the food was relatively poor. I have hardly eaten meat, and I can't see the oil stars in the vegetable soup. Barely full. I really envy my classmates who are close to home, and can go home on Sunday to improve their food. There are many restaurants in the county, none of which have been eaten; there is only one movie theater, a dime and a five cents a ticket, and I have never seen it.

The boys' dormitory, starting on the south side of the large playground, was later moved to the north of the south side of the Tuotuo River embankment. Two rows of chase shops, more than a dozen people huddled together. Put a large urine bucket at the door and save the urine for watering the wheat seedlings. It was convenient to get out of bed at night, and when I came back, the nest was squeezed out, so I had to "plug" into it. Although it was very cold, but also very happy, lying down and falling asleep, I don't know what insomnia is. In winter, a pair of cotton pants, a cotton jacket, very little underwear, and can not take a bath, for a long time, occasionally lice, fleas. Drill into the toilet, quietly scratch a scratch, catch lice, but also afraid of others to see, strange shame, more embarrassed to say to classmates.

<h1 class = "pgc-h-center-line" > (iii</h1>).

The school has a group of very good teachers, which support the school's promotion rate. There are too many of their stories. I can only dragonfly a little water, hang a leak and talk. I was deeply impressed by the shrewd calculus of the math teacher, the eloquence of the physics teacher, the scientific experiments of the chemistry teacher, the pronunciation and reading of the foreign language teacher, the physical education teacher's strong physique, and the politics teacher's talk.

I prefer the liberal arts, focusing on a few liberal arts teachers. Mr. Dong Jie, a Chinese teacher, has profound skills, rigorous academic discipline, and does not smile. Listening to his lectures was like a literary and artistic enjoyment. Especially proficient in ancient Chinese, when he talks about literature and speech, he also talks about the past and the present, and tells you a story, which makes you feel relaxed. He is very scholarly, slow and methodical, leisurely and comfortable, and never in a hurry when he walks. Some people joked that Teacher Dong was afraid of stepping on dead ants when he walked. Once it rained heavily, and he went from this classroom to that classroom without an umbrella. The students said that this time they would see Teacher Dong running. Unexpectedly, he still walked in all directions, put the lesson plan on his head, and walked into another classroom without hurrying. Professor Dong Jie later became a professor in the Department of Chinese of Hebei University, and I visited him many times in my later years. It turned out that he had participated in revolutionary work in his early years, and a vice chairman of the National People's Congress had been his literary friend and colleague. Later, Teacher Dong suffered many hardships and unfair treatment, but he was upright, well-educated, unswerving, and optimistic.

Wang Zhaoxiang, a history teacher, was a teacher who impressed me very much. Listening to his lessons is like listening to historical stories. Boring teaching books, he talked with relish, taste, characters are also vivid, jumping on the paper. He never took a lesson plan with him in class, a history book, and he remembered exactly what period, what era, people, events, what happened, what historical experience and lessons, he could say it all. As long as you listen carefully to his lessons, the college entrance examination will have good results.

Zhang Songzhi, a Chinese teacher, is my homeroom teacher. He was also my mentor, and without his guidance, I would never have been admitted to the Journalism Department of Chinese Min University. It was Teacher Zhang Songzhi who ignited my enthusiasm for learning liberal arts well and my passion for writing good compositions. In composition class, he used my composition as a model essay many times, quoted and read it aloud during lectures, which gave me great encouragement. He encouraged me to submit articles to the newspaper's supplement, when Shijiazhuang Daily published my first thousand-word essay.

Near the college entrance examination, I lacked confidence, and he forced me to apply for the Journalism Department of Chinese Min University. Teacher Zhang was assigned to teach in our school after graduating from college, and his lover, Teacher Song, was teaching at Hengshui Middle School at that time, husband and wife cowherd weaver girl, the two places were separated, but they all spent all their minds on teaching and educating people. In the last three years, I hadn't seen his lover come to school. Later, Mr. Zhang was also transferred to the Department of Chinese of Hebei University as a professor, and he kept in touch with me for a long time. In his eighties, he was in good spirits and in good health, and my classmates and I visited his elderly home many times.

<h1 class= "pgc-h-center-line" > (iv</h1>).

Xuecheng Middle School not only has a good school spirit, but also has an excellent leadership collective.

At that time, the general party branch and the Youth League Committee of the school often gave teachers and students education in revolutionary traditions, education in current affairs and policies, class education in remembering bittersweet feelings, and education in ideology and morality. The youth league committee is also more active, organizing some edutainment and educational cultural activities, including afforestation, singing competitions, visits to study, ball games, etc.

There was an old principal and old secretary named Tong Junjie, a native of Wuji County, who was an old comrade who participated in the revolution during the war years. It is said that after liberation, he actively signed up for education before he was transferred to work in our school. He is not tall, his eyes are sharp, his hair is also very good, but his shoulders are a little uneven. Some people say that it is caused by carrying a gun to fight and carrying too much weight. He also gave his report with humor. Once he said that some classmates had gone to the city, one year of soil, two years of yang, and three years of not recognizing their father and mother. The rustic old man came to see him, but he told his classmates that it was his neighbor. There are also suspected rural large waist cotton pants, the crotch is too large, not beautiful, and another uniform pants should be put on the outside. In fact, you know no, the farmer is the smartest, Burmese crotch cotton pants put the waistband of the pants up, tie up the waistband of the pants, one layer becomes three layers, just to protect the navel from the cold. I've been wearing this cotton pants for more than a decade and know for the first time about this benefit of it. Also, Secretary Tong said, if there is only one cotton coat, let you be a quilt cover, how to be the warmest? Put both feet into one of the sleeves, get tired, lie on your side, and cover your whole body. This is what we experienced during the war years. Later, I became a soldier, tried it with a military coat, and it worked.

The learning atmosphere in our school is good, thanks to the joint efforts of the principal, the director of teaching, and the teachers and students. In the early 1960s, several candidates in our school were admitted to Tsinghua University, Peking University, and Renmin University almost every year. There is a Principal Yang who is very methodical in grasping teaching. Liu Zhaoqian and Zhao Xiuqi, the director of teaching, often leave the class to listen to lectures and solicit opinions. The blackboard newspapers and propaganda columns in the hospital were flourishing. Whoever is first in the math competition, who is on the list in the essay competition, and who breaks the sports record, are all listed. Learn to be self-motivated, you catch up with me, strive to be the first, and become the norm.

From the beginning of high school, my academic performance was mediocre and I was not much stressed. Once, I scored 53 points in the three-dimensional geometry test, and I ranked first in the class. The teacher Zhao Fengxiang found the fourth brother of my tenth class and said: You are the class representative, and your brother Yu Qingtian of the 19th class will take this little score, and he will not say help him.

Teacher Zhao really has a way to find relatives to do work every two grades, and you can imagine how the fourth brother criticized and helped me. Later, the fourth brother was admitted to Tsinghua University, and I was under great pressure. I thought to myself, if I can't even pass an ordinary university, how can I go home and see my parents? On the current grades, whether there is a university, are hanging! There is only one way left for yourself, hurry up and catch up, and work hard.

< h1 class = "pgc-h-center-line" > (5).</h1>

Here, I would like to tell the story of a candidate who has been admitted to the Journalism Department of Chinese University every year for four consecutive years. Since 1961, the Department of Journalism of the National People's Congress has recruited up to 50 new students in two classes almost every year; in 1963, it only recruited 25 new students. At that time, the national college entrance examination, liberal arts students applying for the Chinese Department of Peking University and the Department of Journalism of the National People's Congress were relatively popular. When I reported to the Journalism Department of the National People's Congress in September 1964, I was picked up by two alumni, Wen Qinghai and Zhang Shaoliang, the eldest brothers who graduated from Gaocheng Middle School.

In the 1965 college entrance examination, Yang Zhongyi, another student at Gaocheng Middle School, was admitted to the Journalism Department of the National People's Congress. When the school started in early September, I happily picked him up at the new student registration desk at the school gate. On the first day, I didn't see him report. The next day, the third day, I didn't see him to report. I went to the admissions office to verify, and people said: Yes, Yang Zhongyi of Gaocheng Middle School was recorded. Helplessly, he made a long-distance phone call to ask his alma mater, and Fang learned that he had been selected as a pilot by the Air Force, so he voluntarily gave up the opportunity to study in the journalism department of the National People's Congress.

For four consecutive years, the alma mater Gaocheng Middle School has a student admitted to the Chinese University every year, which is unique in the country. At the very least, it can be explained that the Chinese teaching in our middle school is very solid, involving history, politics, foreign language classes, etc., which are also very good. In addition, almost every year, people are admitted to famous schools such as Tsinghua and Peking University, which also shows that the teaching of mathematics, physics and chemistry in our school and the overall teaching level of various subjects are also first-class in the province.

It is a pity that Yang Zhongyi was not able to study with us. But he was also outstanding in the military, grew up quickly, served as the director of the office of the Naval Aviation Command, made a large pen, published many monographs, and conferred the rank of colonel. The other two scholars are also very accomplished: Wen Qinghai, who was the secretary general of the Hebei Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, has written a lot of works; Zhang Shaoliang, a famous writer in Hebei Province, has published many works, and some have even been made into movies. In that year, he and Yang Zhenwu (People's Daily reporter in Hebei, later the president of people's daily, and now serving in the National People's Congress) went to Zhengding many times to talk, chat, and interview with Xi Jinping, the then secretary of the county party committee, and Zhang Shaoliang was still serving as deputy county magistrate in Zhengding. Shao Liang once told me that sometimes they chatted with Xi Jinping until the middle of the night, and when they left, they were afraid of disturbing the old man in the transmission room, so they had to go over the wall. Unfortunately, Brother Shao Liang died young and left us in 2005 due to illness.

Finally, I would like to tell a little bit about the flood control in the summer of 1963. On the eve of the summer vacation, it rained for several days, flash floods broke out, and the Tuotuo River Bridge in the north of Gaocheng was washed across. The flood waters rose higher and higher, almost flattening the levees of the Tuotuo River. The school received a notice from the superior: organize high school teachers and students to participate in flood prevention and flood rescue. Therefore, we boys took turns to go to the "front line", 24 hours a day, patrolling and guarding the south embankment of the Tuotuo River.

I was 18 years old and had never seen such a big flood. The flood of the Taihang Mountains, the waves rolling, the momentum of the surging momentum, poured down. In the flood, there are collapsed house beams, uprooted trees, crops, farm tools, horse-drawn carriages, ox carts, and from time to time the corpses of dead sheep, cattle, horses, donkeys and other livestock... It's miserable. The flood was about to overflow the levee, so we packed dirt in straw bags and transported it to the levee to form a flood wall. Wherever there is danger, everyone will go.

Rain, day after day. Raincoats and umbrellas don't work at all, and the clothes are all soaked, which is equivalent to "soaking" in the water all day. Meals are also on the levee, and steamed pickles are eaten in the rain.

Female students also went up the levee to fight the flood, but most stayed at school to share logistical support tasks: helping the cook, cooking, delivering food, washing clothes for boys, and baking fire to dry clothes. Because the humidity is too high, the clothes cannot be dried indoors for several days.

Through the joint efforts of the people of the whole county, the South Levee of the Tuotuo River was finally saved. The flood did not break in Gaocheng County, and Gaocheng Middle School, which is located under the embankment, was also safe. Originally, everyone wanted to use the summer vacation to review their homework and prepare for next year's college entrance examination, but the flood disrupted our study plan. Although we did not review our homework and did not go home throughout the summer, we experienced a hard exercise and test of flood prevention and flood control, leaving an unforgettable memory in our lives.

Gaocheng Middle School, my alma mater! You are our glorious banner, you are our pride and pride!
