As early as the Red Army period, Xu Shiyou and Nie Fengzhi had fought side by side, but because they belonged to different teams, the two did not know each other, and later during the "Kang Da" study period, although the two had several sides of the relationship, but the friendship was not deep, until the Jiaodong War of Resistance, the two began to establish a deep friendship from continuous cooperation.
During the anti-Japanese war in Jiaodong, Xu Shiyou served as the commander of the military region, and Nie Fengzhi served as the commander of the Wei naval sub-district, although the two were directly subordinate to the superior and subordinate relations, but in the combat cooperation, the two people's appreciation and admiration for each other increased day by day. As long as there is a large-scale battle, Xu Shiyou will definitely entrust the task of the main attack to Nie Fengzhi's troops, and Nie Fengzhi can complete the task well every time.

In September 1946, just after the Liberation War began, Lingshan, where the Jiaodong Military Region was stationed, was captured by the Kuomintang troops, in order to retake this strategic place as soon as possible, Xu Shiyou decided to send a general to counterattack Lingshan, but what he did not expect was that at this moment, his "general" Nie Fengzhi had just finished appendicitis surgery and was lying in the field hospital unable to move.

During this period, Nie Fengzhi would go to Xu Shiyou's residence as long as he had free time, chat with him and play chess with him.

At that time, Nie Fengzhi was already plagued by many diseases, not only emphysema, but also high blood pressure and other problems, but even so, for Xu Shiyou's request, Nie Fengzhi was still responsive.
The revolutionary friendship between Xu Shiyou and Nie Fengzhi was not only reflected in peacetime, but even after Xu Shiyou's death, Nie Fengzhi's feelings for this old leader and old comrade-in-arms were still tearful.

At the beginning of 1985, General Xu Shiyou often felt abdominal pain, at first he was patient with it, but by March, the frequency of abdominal pain was getting higher and higher, and the degree of pain was getting stronger and stronger, in desperation, General Xu Shiyou was only examined in the hospital, and soon, an unexpected result came out.
Around May 1985, a red-headed document was sent to Nie Fengzhi, which was Xu Shiyou's physical examination report, and Nie Fengzhi stared at this report for a long time, and could clearly see that there were tears swirling in his eyes. Only to see that this report is written with four dazzling words: advanced liver cancer.
After confirming that the medical examination report was not wrong, Nie Fengzhi immediately issued an order: no one should disclose his examination results to General Xu Shiyou. A few days later, Nie Fengzhi deliberately took his wife to visit General Xu Shiyou, in the process of chatting, Nie Fengzhi and his wife have been trying to suppress their inner sadness, when Xu Shiyou asked about his physical examination results, Nie Fengzhi said lightly: "You just have a little problem in the liver, it may be cirrhosis, no big trouble." ”
General Xu Shiyou, who had experienced hundreds of battles, was finally defeated by the disease and died in Nanjing on October 22, 1985. And all the aftermath of General Xu Shiyou was also handled by General Nie Fengzhi, but as everyone knows, General Nie Fengzhi at this time is also nearly ancient, but for the funeral of his old leader and old comrades-in-arms, Nie Fengzhi feels that he is not at ease to hand it over to anyone, he hopes to be able to personally send his good brother on the last journey, and Xu Shiyou's funeral is a burial "specially approved" by Deng Xiaoping.
Since the 1950s, the state has been advocating cremation, and Chairman Mao, Premier Zhou and others have taken the lead in signing the cremation consent form, and Xu Shiyou proposed that he should be buried after his death, hoping to be buried with his mother to fulfill his filial piety.
After Xu Shiyou's death, Nie Fengzhi personally sent the report of Xu Shiyou's request for burial to Beijing, but after the report was circulated among many central leaders, no one dared to make a decision, and the report was finally submitted to Deng Xiaoping, then chairman of the Central Military Commission. After much deliberation, Deng Xiaoping wrote 8 big words on the report:
