Bai Yan is good at interpreting the unfortunate women and the dignified and delicate wife and mother, with a clear image, and cooperates with Wu Chufan, Zhang Ying, and Zhang Huoyou the most. His starring business cards include: "Splendid Rivers and Mountains" (1937), "Madame Butterfly" (1940), "Spring" (1953), "Cold Night" (1955), "Spring Broken Dreams" (1955), "Night Feast of the Giants" (1959), "Lonely Hong of the Sea of People" (1960), "Poor Parents' Hearts in the World" (1960), "Night of the Soul" (1962), "The Hatred of the Sea of Evil" (1962), "The Pearls of the Sea" (1965) and so on.

In 1952, Bai Yan and famous actors Wu Chufan, Zhang Huoyou, Huang Manli and others founded "Zoomlion Film Enterprise Co., Ltd.", with the purpose of producing high-quality films, and vigorously rejected the trend of "seven days fresh" and "stars do not separate families" in the film industry at that time. After acting in "Mad Woman" in 1964, he retired from the art world and died of bone cancer in Hong Kong on May 6, 1987, at the age of 67. He is the author of the autobiography "Splendid Youth".
