Zhang Yu [yù] Guang (1885~1968)
He is a famous painter and art educator in modern and contemporary China.
Zhang Yuguang ruled both Chinese and Western paintings throughout his life, engaged in the creation and teaching of Western paintings in his early years, and painted many Chinese paintings in his later years.
He is also influential abroad, and his works are in the Collection of the Rijksmuseum in France and the Berlin Academy of Arts in Germany.
Zhang Yuguang is exquisite in flowers, birds, landscapes, people, and animals. The painting style of the works has been in his recent years, and he can integrate Chinese and Western painting methods.
In particular, his flower and bird paintings have novel compositions, bright colors, and are interesting.
Flipping through the historical materials of modern and contemporary Haipai art, the description of him is almost blank, occasionally mentioned, but also vague, really a strange person.
Publishing cartoon satires from 1909 to 1911, he was one of the first cartoonists in China to publish political satires in newspapers, and the later comic book circles almost forgot him;
In the autumn of 1914, he was appointed as the head of the Shanghai Pictorial Art School, and his descendants only knew Liu Haisu, but did not know Zhang Yuguang;
He first experimented with modern pigments used in painting, and now who knows the relationship between pigments and Zhang Yuguang?
However, the most amazing thing that spread in the market is that he has a pair of "ghost eyes". When Nan Huaijin talked about the divine powers in Buddhism, he mentioned the painter Zhang Yuguang, saying that there were five kinds of divine powers: xiutong, baotong, Yitong, ghosttong, and demon tong.
Of course, to say that Zhang Yuguang has "ghost eyes" is somewhat mystified, which should be a joke of many artists, not enough to believe.
Zhang Yuguang is such a forgotten legend.
