Kengo Kuma designed the Curved Library in honor of the Norwegian playwright Ibsen

Kengo Kuma Architects & Urban Design partnered with Mad Arkitekter to design a curved library. Located in the Norwegian city of Schien, the building surrounds a small urban park with its trees.

The building, called the Ibsen Library, will be a cultural center showcasing the literature of the 19th-century Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen.

The library was designed by Kengo Kuma Architecture & Urban Design and Mad Arkitekter and developed in collaboration with Buro Happold Engineering. The design was also the winner of a recent competition.

The library is located in a small urban park in the center of Sheen, adjacent to the Ibsenhuset Cultural Centre and Concert Hall, a cultural centre named after the playwright Ibsen.

The library is designed to protect and place full emphasis on its park environment while maximizing its potential as a public space.

The curved shape of the library is outlined around the existing trees in the park, and the new amphitheater and multiple entrances will help connect the library to the park.

Yuki Ikeguchi, partner at Kengo Kuma Architects & Urban Design, said: "The location of the Ibsen Library in the Cultural District also offers great potential for the creation of a new cultural center in The city of Sean. ”

"At the moment, the park is still relatively quiet and less crowded, but by combining with the new library, the park will also be fully revitalized by spontaneous crowds and more indoor activities."

In order to maximize the connection between the library and the surrounding trees and the park, the design uses natural material tones based on the warmth of the wood.

Ikeguchi said that one side of the building will also be made of glass in a large area, creating an atmosphere of "seamless connection between outdoor and indoor spaces".

From the outside, one of the most striking features of the Ibsen Library is its soft curves, staggered roof, which slope downward toward the park.

The library's eaves are wide enough to provide shade for the entrance, as well as part of the outdoor space and seating area.

According to the architectural firm, the roof of the library will be covered by wooden tiles of similar shape and size to the leaves of the surrounding trees.

The library's skylights will feature similar shingles, but with pores, creating a mottled light effect in the interior, as if walking under a canopy, or allowing the library to glow softly outward during the night and the gloomy season.

The Ibsen Library will be built on a slope with two floors rising above the ground and two floors embedded in the hillside. Most of the space will be open-plan, with no fixed partitions, but bookcases to partition the space.

Ikeguchi explains, "This project is a departure from the traditional library philosophy of using space primarily for research, reading and learning. Our proposal for this new library is to fully integrate special activities with daily activities. ”

The space on the first floor of the library will feature a café and children's area, with wood and earthy-toned interiors that maximise its connection to the park.

The two-story underground space is primarily designed for adults, and Ikeguchi describes its cozy atmosphere as "the feeling of being submerged, protected, and immersed in the earth."

A more notable feature of the basement is its sloping floor, lined with rows of wide steps with bookshelves on top of which can also be used as a seat for visitors.
