In 1948, the enemy's "all-round defense" had completely gone bankrupt and was forced to switch to "key defense" in an attempt to take the existing troops and fortifications as the strategic point line and the elite troops as the core, gather troops, and carry out a dying struggle.
On September 12, 1948, the Liaoshen Campaign began, and after 50 days of fierce fighting, the Northeast People's Liberation Army annihilated a total of 470,000 enemies and liberated the entire territory of Northeast China.
The Jin-Cha-Ji Liberated Area has been merged with the Jin-Ji Luyu Liberated Area to form the North China Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, the North China People's Government, and the North China Military Region. Our former Jin-Cha-Ji Field Army was changed to the Second Corps of the North China Military Region.
During the Liaoshen Campaign, the troops of our North China Military Region deployed defenses along the Taiyuan, Suiyuan, and Pingsui areas to prevent the enemy forces in the northeast from moving closer to north China, preventing the enemy troops in north China from reinforcing the northeast, and separating the enemy's two major strategic groups, northeast China and north China.
The supreme commander of the enemy forces in North China was Fu Zuoyi. After the Battle of Shijiazhuang, Chiang Kai-shek took Sun Lianzhong as a scapegoat, removed him from his post, handed over all the battlefields of North China to Fu Zuoyi's command, and used Fu Zuoyi's strength to support the dangerous situation in North China.
Comrade Mao Zedong has come to Xibaipo in Pingshan County. Together with Comrades Zhou Enlai and Zhu De, he organized a headquarters with only a dozen people. Zhou Enlai once said: "Our headquarters may be the smallest headquarters in the world, sending telegrams every day and commanding a rare armageddon in the world." ”
In order to give an account to Chiang Kai-shek, Fu Zuoyi once mobilized his mechanized troops and cavalry to the Baoding area in an attempt to sneak into Xibaipo, where the Central Committee of our Party and Chairman Mao was located, and destroy our command center.
As early as May 1948, when Chairman Mao first came to Jinchaji and lived in Nanzhuang, Fu Pingcheng, Fu Zuoyi, with the cooperation of hidden agents, sent enemy planes to bomb, and a bomb hit Chairman Mao's garrison. Fortunately, under the protection of Comrade Nie Rongzhen, Chairman Mao was safe and sound.
Commander Nie ordered our Second Corps to go south to intercept the enemy. We rushed from Xuanhua to the area of Guanxian, Quyang, and Xinle, and repelled the enemy who would commit the crime. In order to ensure a more reliable security guarantee for the headquarters of the whole army, we have been stationed in this area from September to the end of October.
On November 18, we received the first telegram from the Central Military Commission and Chairman Mao on the Pingjin Campaign: ordering the Second Corps of North China to stand by in Fuping and to prepare to move at any time to the vicinity of Zhangjiakou and coordinate with the Third Corps to prevent the enemy from escaping.
At midnight on the 24th, the telegram ordered the Third Corps to withdraw from Sui, secretly march eastward, and enter zhangjiakou and Xuanhua in the form of surprise attacks, waiting for the main force in the northeast to enter the customs. At the same time, the First Corps was ordered to stop the attack on Taiyuan and concentrate its forces on the Battle of Pingjin.
On the 26th, Chairman Mao sent us another telegram order: On the 26th, Yang Luogeng led the Second Corps from Quyang to Zhuoxian county and the area west of Laishui on the 5th and 6th. The Seventh Column, under the command of Yang Luogeng, should be forced by Baoding to move north to force the enemy to move.
On the 27th, while the above-mentioned order was being carried out, Chairman Mao called us again and ordered us: On December 1, we concentrated on the hidden standby in the Bauhinia Pass area northwest of Yi County. Bauhinia Pass is a pass in the Taihang Mountains west of the Jizhong Plain. Moving north from here is not easy to expose combat attempts.
On the night of November 30, we completed the assembly on time. From the telegrams we received continuously, we learned that the first column of the Third Corps occupied Shalingzi and cut off Zhangjiakou from the enemy forces in Xuanhua; the second column captured Chaigou Fort and Zuowei; and the sixth column attacked Wanquan City and Guo Leizhuang.
We have also learned that the units of our army that will be thrown into this campaign include two corps of the Northeast Field Army, a railway column and special forces, two corps of the North China Field Army and an artillery brigade, and the troops of the Jirecha, Inner Mongolia, Jidong, Beiyue, Jizhong, Jinan, and Jinsui Military Regions, totaling more than one million troops.
In order to unify the command of operations, Lin Biao, Luo Ronghuan, Nie Rongzhen, and others formed the Pingjin Frontline Committee, which took charge of the overall situation. The party, government, military, and civilians in North China went all out to support the front-line battles.
Chairman Mao asked us to hide and stand by at Bauhinia Pass because the movements of the enemy in Peiping were not yet clear. If the enemy flees east in order to go south by sea, we will go to the front line of Tianjin and Tangshan to intercept the enemy; if the enemy flees westward, we will go to the Zhangjiakou area to stop the enemy.
On December 1, we learned that the surprise attack of the Three Corps on Zhangjiakou had indeed mobilized the enemy as planned. Fu Zuoyi's "ace" 35th Army stationed in Beiping and the 104th Army stationed in Huailai sent reinforcements to the west by train and car.
At this moment, the advance corps of our northeast army, which had secretly entered the customs, suddenly appeared in the Miyun area northeast of Beiping, and Chairman Mao ordered the Third Corps of Zhangjiakou to "encircle without fighting" and firmly tie the enemy's Thirty-fifth Army, which was reinforced from Beiping to the west, on the chariot.
On December 2, the Central Military Commission sent a "4A" telegram ordering our Second Corps to march out of Bauhinia Pass and directly approach the Pingsui Line!
In accordance with the arrangements of the Central Military Commission and Chairman Mao, the Pingjin Campaign was divided into three stages: first dividing and encircling the enemy and cutting the enemy's one-word snake array into several sections; first resolving the two ends, that is, annihilating the enemy of Zhang Sui in the west and the enemy of Jintang in the east; and finally resolving the enemy of Beiping.
However, this "long snake" is after all composed of more than 600,000 American-style equipment of the enemy army, up to a thousand miles. Cutting off and eating such a "long snake" is not an easy task. Only an outstanding strategist like Chairman Mao can accomplish this military feat with "ease."
It is said that when Guo Jingyun, commander of the Thirty-fifth Army, left Beiping, he was completely "successful on horseback" and said a few words in a row, "Go and come back." He did go very fast, but whether he could return to Beiping after arriving in Zhangjiakou was up to him.
At the beginning of February, Fu Zuoyi was alerted by Miyun, knowing that our Northeast People's Liberation Army had begun to enter the customs, and learning that our Second Corps had been dispatched from Bauhinia Pass, and only then did he feel that the situation was not good. Therefore, he hurriedly flew to Zhangjiakou and secretly ordered Guo Jingyun to quickly return to Beiping to protect him.
Chairman Mao noticed Fu Zuoyi's move and understood that the purpose of his visit was to lose the pawn to protect the car, and he would rather lose Zhangjiakou than to make Guo Jingyun's department surrender to Beiping. So, on December 4, three telegrams were sent in a row to our Second Corps, which was advancing northward, in a hurry.
At this time, most of the troops of our Second Corps were still marching on the rugged mountain roads in the Taihang Mountains. In order not to let the enemy run away, the troops desperately went north and north at full speed... Before they could cook, the warriors chewed raw millet one by one.
In the early hours of the morning, the corps headquarters advanced to the south bank of the Ocean River. There are no bridges on the river, and layers of ice form on the river. Hearing that the river was not deep, the warriors immediately jumped into the glacier and "plowed" out a path. When the last warrior came ashore, the freshly waded water froze silently.
Soon, the hostilities changed. The enemy's Thirty-fifth Army had crossed Xuanhua and fled down to the garden and in the direction of the new security. An urgent telegram was sent to us again: In addition to severely criticizing the fraternal troops for allowing the Thirty-fifth Army to flee eastward, it was clearly instructed that Yang Luogeng should obey the Orders of the Central Military Commission on many occasions to prevent the enemy from fleeing east.
At this time the staff officer reported: "According to reconnaissance, the Thirty-fifth Army has crossed the lower garden and gone straight to the new security guard!" "What?" I was so anxious that beads of sweat appeared on my forehead, and I immediately said to Comrades Yang Dezhi and Luo Ruiqing: "The situation is urgent, and it is only fifteen kilometers from the lower garden to the new security guard." ”
Fifteen kilometers is nothing for Guo Jingyun's ten-wheeled truck. As soon as the Thirty-fifth Army passes new security, the situation will become unfavorable to our army. The Thirty-fifth Army fled east, and the 104th Army of Huailai moved westward, and once they were together, it would be very difficult to annihilate them.
Comrade Luo Ruiqing asked, "How far is the chicken singing station between the lower garden and the new security guard from the lower garden?" I replied, "About twenty miles." I added, "There are three regiments of Comrade Zhan Danan near Jimingyi, which can block for a while, but they have been fighting for four consecutive days." ”
Comrade Yang Dezhi clapped his fists: "Send a telegram to Wang Zhao, and ask the Twelfth Brigade to block the enemy army no matter what." I added: "At the same time, the electricity was sent to the tenth and eleventh brigades of the third column, the eighth column and the fourth column, and they were asked to speed up and use their desperate strength to rush the road." ”
Comrade Luo Ruiqing said solemnly: "Tell all commanders and fighters that if the Thirty-fifth Army is allowed to escape the new security, then our Second Corps will not be able to give an account to the Central Military Commission and Chairman Mao!" "Then we will make a big mistake and affect the whole war!" Comrade Yang Dezhi added.
Wang Zhao's telegram was successful: The Twelfth Brigade of our army captured the enemy's Thirty-fifth Army in the new security. Wang Zhao led the 12th Brigade to rush to the new security guards. At this time, the four hundred "Dadaoji" of the enemy's Thirty-fifth Army were still struggling to breathe in the Chicken Song Station amid the many obstacles created for them in the south of Zhan Da.
"Good one Wang Zhao!" It turned out that they took advantage of the melee between the two sides and the opportunity of the gap between the enemy and us, and pretended to be the enemy to deceive the west gate of the new security guard, and in only twenty minutes, they annihilated the defending enemy who was sleeping in the dream and controlled the new security guard.
We immediately telegraphed this victory to Chairman Mao. The command was jubilant, "Caught! "Blocked!" The news went away and became a mobilization order to speed up the march.
