The Chishui River is a first-class tributary of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, and since the implementation of the fishing ban order four years ago, fish resources have gradually recovered, fish species have become more abundant, and the number of rare fish resources has increased.

The Institute of Hydrobiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences pointed out in the "Interim Summary Report on the Monitoring, Conservation Assessment and Planning of the Ban on Fishing in the Chishui River" that the number of species surveyed in the early resources of fish has risen from 32 species before the ban to 37 species.

The report indicates that the trend of young age and miniaturization of fish stocks flowing through the Chishui River Basin has been effectively curbed, and the population structure has gradually become more rational. According to local introductions, the average weight of the Chinese barb catfish increased from 336.9 g to 492.5 g.

The number of cochineal fish in the national key protected animals has increased significantly. According to statistics, the number of cochineal collected increased from 3.4 fish/year before the ban to 5.7 fish/year.

From 00:00 on January 1, 2017 to 24:00 on December 31, 2026, Guizhou implemented a total fishing ban in the Chishui River Basin, prohibiting all fishing behaviors – the first first tributary of the Yangtze River Basin to implement a comprehensive "ten-year ban on fishing".

The chishui river section has a total length of 628.23 kilometers, originating in Yunnan Province, flowing into the three provinces of Yunnan and Guichuan, and joining the Yangtze River through Sichuan Province. Located in the core area of the Rare and Endemic Fish National Nature Reserve in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, Chishui River is the only river in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River that has no gates and dams to block and maintain a natural flow state, and more than 160 kinds of fish resources are hidden in the river.

According to the relevant departments of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Guizhou Province, the Chishui Fishery Resources Association now carries out regular monitoring 60 times a year and adopts a series of measures to strengthen the protection of fishery resources. Including the construction of artificial fish nests of more than 5,000 square meters, the holding of aquatic organisms breeding and stocking activities. In June, 300,000 cochineals were stocked in Xishui County, Zunyi City.

In order to vigorously create a good atmosphere for the ban on fishing, Guizhou has also established a law enforcement reporting mechanism for the whole fishery administration, expanding the participation of the masses in reporting through the release of WeChat public accounts, email addresses, telephones and other means, and initially forming a good atmosphere for the whole people to participate in "fish protection".

While achieving initial results, Guizhou will continue to work hard to solve the problem of illegal fishing in the Chishui River Basin as soon as possible. In addition to strengthening the strict inspection of fishing bans by various departments, Guizhou will also accelerate the construction of a video surveillance system, make full use of high-tech means to supervise, collect evidence and deter illegal acts, and effectively reduce illegal fishing.

In addition, Guizhou will also cooperate with the fishery administrative departments of Sichuan and Yunnan to continuously improve the agreement on joint management of fisheries in the co-managed waters of the Chishui River, carry out cross-regional joint law enforcement, and severely crack down on illegal fishing.
