Everton took their first lead by two minutes into the game, with Anthony Gordon driving into midfield to free Demare Gray, who chose Tom Davis for an assist on the bench. Andros Townsend's opportunistic shot was blocked by Ben Foster, Gordon's header was far from the rebound and Rafa Benitez's players were looking for a second goal.

Watford thought they had equalised after Joshua King's free-kick, but the referee's flag was raised. Everton tried to reassert their dominance, but they found it difficult to beat Watford again. Ahead of the first half, when Gordon was knocked out by Yuragi Kuka in the penalty area, Everton came closest to regaining the lead, but an appeal for a penalty was dismissed.

Watford still had plenty of chances and Kuka pulled the highest from Juan Hernandez's corner kick to equalise. Almost after kick-off, Joshua King seized his chance after a quick counter-attack.

Pickford was quick to deny Emmanuel Dennis with all his might, but there was nothing he could do when Everton stopped playing and allowed Kim to jump the waltz from behind to complete his hat-trick. Dennis eventually scored the goal he deserved in stoppage time, and Watford erupted in a celebratory riot and he left Goodison Park with the victory he deserved.
