Cumulative update KB5006746 released: Fixes Windows 11 printer installation failures

author:cnBeta

Microsoft says it has fixed another issue in Windows 11 that caused a printer to fail when installing a printer over a network connection. Earlier this month, Microsoft acknowledged the problem and confirmed that it exists in Windows 10/11.

Cumulative update KB5006746 released: Fixes Windows 11 printer installation failures

Microsoft explains: "This problem has been observed in devices that use HTTP connections to print servers to access printers. When a client connects to the server to install a printer, a directory mismatch occurs, causing the installer files to be generated incorrectly. Therefore, the driver may not be downloadable. The printer connection method described in this issue is not commonly used with devices designed for home use. Printing environments affected by this issue are more common in businesses and organizations."

The good news is that this problem is now gone, as the latest cumulative update released by Microsoft to all devices running the aforementioned versions of Windows includes a specific fix for this aspect. So theoretically, the only thing you need to do is install the KB5006746 cumulative update on the affected system.

If you can't install the cumulative update yet, Microsoft also provides a temporary solution. "IT administrators with administrative privileges can still install printer drivers on the client in other ways, such as copying packaged drivers from a known good package location," Microsoft said. Only the automatic download and installation process is affected by this problem."
