Beijing, October 26 (Reporter Liu Liang) Recently, a new type of catalyst independently developed by the Beijing Research Institute of Chemical Industry affiliated to Sinopec - low silver content and high selectivity YS-8840 silver catalyst was successfully put into use. This is the first silver catalyst with low silver content and high selectivity in China to achieve industrial application, marking that the domestic YS series silver catalyst has stepped into a new track of international competition and provided technical support for the development of the domestic catalyst industry.

According to Sinopec, silver catalyst is a precious metal catalyst with silver as the active component, and is the only industrial catalyst for ethylene oxidation to produce ethylene oxide. Ethylene oxide is an important organic chemical product, widely used in medicine, automotive, electronics and other fields. The YS-8840 silver catalyst developed and put into use this time has the characteristics of low cost, high selectivity and high initial activity, which is suitable for the current mainstream market ethylene oxide plant. Its successful development has filled the technical gap of low silver content and high selectivity silver catalysts in China, and greatly improved the competitiveness of domestic YS series silver catalysts.

Li Jinbing, vice president of Yanshan Branch of Beijing Research Institute of Chemical Industry and academic leader of silver catalyst, introduced that low silver content catalyst will be one of the mainstream of the future application market, and the silver content of YS-8840 silver catalyst has been reduced by about one-third, while the reaction performance remains unchanged. At the same time, the production of the catalyst can reduce co2 emissions by nearly 40% and reduce production energy consumption by more than one-third.

Sinopec silver catalyst products are suitable for more than 95% of the world's ethylene oxide/ethylene glycol plants. In the 1980s, The Beijing Research Institute of Chemical Industry, a subsidiary of Sinopec, for the first time realized the localization of silver catalysts for ethylene oxide. In recent years, Sinopec has successively put into the market four major types of silver catalyst products with high activity, medium selectivity, high efficiency and high selectivity, which are suitable for more than 95% of the world's ethylene oxide/ethylene glycol (EO/EG) devices, saving nearly one billion US dollars in foreign exchange for the country.
