Taizhou, 5 Mar (Xinhua) -- On 5 March, the sea in Dachen, Jiaojiang District, Taizhou City, Zhejiang Province, was calm and the waves were calm, and a large red boom 40 meters long lifted artificial fishing reefs from boats and slowly put them into the sea. After the reef is placed in the sea, divers dive into the bottom of the reef area to check whether the reef body reaches the bottom of the sea smoothly to avoid serious subsidence or tilt of the reef.

It is reported that the Dachen sea area is a national marine ranch demonstration area, and the stocking is a composite reef of fish shell algae, designed by the Zhejiang Marine Fisheries Research Institute, which is the first time that a composite artificial fishing reef has been released in Zhejiang sea area.

The reef can provide habitat, feeding ground and spawning ground for marine organisms such as microorganisms, algae, shells, fish and shrimp, especially suitable for island reef fish such as black seabream and true seabream.

According to reports, the reef body is a reinforced concrete prefabricated part, a single reef weighs 6 tons, divided into four layers, each layer has 4 attachment bases. Each attachment base is covered with shells, which is what makes this reef special.

"These shells can increase the contact surface of the reef with the seawater, facilitate the attachment of microorganisms, algae, and provide nutrients for them." Yin Linghua, a staff member of the Bureau of Oceanography and Fisheries of Jiaojiang District, Taizhou City, said that this time they plan to release 1,300 reefs, releasing 34 hectares of sea area, and it will take about a month to complete the release.

The release of artificial fishing reefs can not only give marine life a stable "home", but also curb illegal fishing practices and alleviate seabed desertification. "For that kind of trawling, the nets are hooked by the reef to better protect marine life." Yin Linghua said.

In addition to the release of artificial fishing reefs, in recent years, the local government has also carried out breeding and stocking of marine organisms such as fish, shrimp, shellfish and algae through the construction of artificial algae factories, breeding and stocking, and targeted domestication, so as to protect marine fishery resources and optimize the ecological environment of The Dachen Sea.
