29 so far! 2020 became the most active hurricane season on record

author:Upstream News

On the evening of November 9, local time, Tropical Storm Theta (the 8th letter of the Greek alphabet) formed in the Atlantic Ocean, making 2020 the most active hurricane season on record, with 29 storms so far.

According to the National Hurricane Center, there is no monitoring or warning at this time because the "West Tower" will move eastward and stay in open water before dissipating. While it is unlikely that The West Tower will make landfall, Tropical Storm Eta (the 7th letter of the Greek alphabet) has already made landfall.

ETA made landfall on the evening of November 8 local time and has entered the Gulf of Mexico. Prior to this, there had been torrential downpours in the South of Florida. According to data from PowerOutage.US, which tracks utilities reports, nearly 13,000 users in Florida had lost power as of the evening of November 9, local time.

ETA was the 12th named storm to make landfall in the United States this season, breaking a record of 9 set in 1916.

Many schools in Southern Florida closed before the storm hit, and bridges were closed due to high winds. According to CNN's wfor, many South Floridars wake up to find that streets have been flooded, with flooding in some areas already knee-high.

ETA has made at least two more landings before that, one in Cuba on the morning of October 8 and the other in Central America last week in the form of a Category IV hurricane, both of which are still under the influence of the hurricane's aftermath.

Emergency relief plans have been developed in Cuba and Mexico, and relief efforts in Guatemala and Honduras, the hardest hit so far, continue.

According to the Honduras Standing Emergency Committee, 38 people have died, 8 are missing and more than 60,000 have been evacuated from their homes in Honduras. Guatemala's National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction reported last Saturday that 116 people were still missing, mostly due to landslides in the remote village of Queja in the central Altavilla pas region. The agency said at least 8,938 people had been evacuated and 5,780 remained in temporary shelters.
