Ma Shizeng was born on April 2, 1900 in Guizhou Town, Shunde, living in Guangzhou. At that time in Guangzhou, Cantonese opera was prevalent. The lively Ma Shi Zeng has been fascinated by Cantonese opera since he was a child. However, Chinese traditional family concept is to hope that their children can create a scholarly door, which is not only resistant to such a profession as a drama artist, but also despised, and Ma Shizeng's parents are not exempt from vulgarity. When did Ma Shi start studying Cantonese opera, and how did it develop after that? Today, let's take a look.

When he was young, Ma Shi zeng, Liyuan's career was not calm, and he went south and north to make a living

Ma Shi used to be with the Red Line Woman

Ma Shizeng's grandmother liked to watch drama and often took him with her.

According to Ma Shi once recalled: "At that time, Zhou Yuli's "Shandong Xiangma" was very popular with the audience, but I loved to watch Snake Zaiwang, who played Mr. Guangdong. I still remember his moves in the hotel, as well as the contrivance of the horse. He was really talented, and I was very envious of him at the time. ”

Ma Shi once liked Zhu Cibo's "Three Qi Zhou Yu", believing that Zhu Cibo "dressed Zhou Yu differently than usual, and his majesty was a bit elegant." After watching the play, I came home and learned to hum a few words, thinking that it was very good to do the play. ”

Due to the failure of his grandfather to run a tea house, the family fell into the middle of the road, and after graduating from secondary school, Ma Shi once left Guangzhou for Hong Kong to work as an apprentice in a copper and iron shop opened by a distant relative. The apprenticeship life is very hard, taking care of dirty work and being bullied unnecessarily by old guys. Ma Shi had only been an apprentice for a few months, leaving Hong Kong and returning to Guangzhou.

The horse master who ran away halfway did not dare to go home. He remembered that when he was a child, there was a theater near the school that received apprentices to teach plays. The master who taught the drama was a husband and wife, and the man sang Zhengdan when he was young, very famous, but later lost his voice, and had to change to the chief student.

Because his life was not settled, Ma Shi once turned to this theater and signed the "head and tail name". The master gave him the stage name of "Guan Shichang", and from then on, Ma Shi began an unstable pear garden career.

At the beginning of 1918, Da Niuye, the "big flag bearer" of Singapore's "Qingwei New Class", returned to Guangzhou from Singapore to recruit actors, and the master resold Ma Shizeng's "head and tail name" for 30 Singapore dollars to Da Niu Ye.

After arriving in Singapore, Da Niu Ye lost his faith and did not let him be an ugly life but a Ma Dan, and Ma Shi was angry and left the drama class. Leaving the drama class is equivalent to having no financial resources, and with people in a foreign land, Ma Shizeng's life is in crisis. Ma Shi had taught in a small school first, but because of the constraints of the "head and tail name", he was frequently disturbed by the drama class, and it was still difficult to restore his freedom.

The "Xiaosheng Quan" of the Qingwei new class was very sympathetic to Ma Shizeng's plight, and he paid for ma Shizeng's "head and tail name" and introduced him to the Yao Tiancai class as the third xiaosheng.

After that, Ma Shi used the stage name of "Feng Huazi" and continued the life of a Cantonese opera actor. However, due to the exclusion of the artists in the same class, Ma Shi was soon unemployed again. That year, Ma Shi was 19 years old.

Horse masters have wandered all over Singapore, Malaysia and other places. He sold plasters in Bentongbu, pulled rickshaws, worked as a choreographer in the theater class, worked as a miner in the mines, and even worked as a bookkeeper in a small coffee shop in Baluo.

After wandering for a year, the 20-year-old Ma Shi finally found a job in the Pingtiancai Troupe as the third primary student.

At that time, under the influence of the May Fourth New Culture Movement, the improvement of opera was becoming more and more vigorous. As a new school figure in the Cantonese opera industry, Liang Shaofeng advocated performing fashion dramas. He invited Ma Shi Zeng to perform his first play "Epilepsy, Mockery, Waste, and Regret".

In the play, Ma Shi successfully created the image of a gambler, which caused a sensation in Xinbu. Because of his outstanding performance, Ma Shi was promoted to the second child. After that, Ma Shi co-starred in "The Legend of the White Snake" with Liang Shaofeng on the same stage in Xinbu. His performance of Xu Xian is chic in singing and meticulous in performance, and once again won praise.

The following year, Ma Shi met another Cantonese opera master, Liang Yuanheng, and worshiped Liang Yuanheng as his teacher. Then, he followed Liang Yuanheng to Singapore and joined the Puxian Changchun Troupe, from this time on, he used his real name Ma Shi Zeng. Since then, the name Ma Shi Zeng has gradually become popular on the stage of Cantonese opera, and Ma Shi has gradually become a master of Cantonese opera.
