Chen Jiageng was born on October 21, 1874 in Yingchuan Size hall of Jimeishe, Tong'an County, Fujian Province. "Yingchuan Size" symbolizes yingchuan's eternal quilt for future generations.
In 1884, the Battle of Majiang broke out in Fuzhou, and the Fujian Marine Division was completely destroyed. The defeat at the Battle of Majiang deeply stimulated the teenager Chen Jiageng. However, Mr. Jiageng did not retreat from the difficulties, but instead rose to the occasion, believing that the establishment of Xiamen University could not be delayed, so he poured out his family property of 4 million oceans to establish Xiamen University. The economic crisis of 1929 hit the world, and Mr. Jiageng's industry was also hit hard. At that time, the foreign consortium proposed that the condition for injecting funds was to "stop blood transfusions to Xiamen University and Jimei School", but Mr. Jiageng's determination to "sell the building rather than support Xiamen University" made him categorically reject the consortium's funds. In the spring of 1937, Mr. Jiageng unconditionally dedicated Xiamen University to the government.
