Qinghai built China's first Przewalski's gazelle protection channel

Guangming Daily reporter Wan Majia

On July 2, the Przewalski's Gazelle Life Protection Channel, which was jointly supervised by the procuratorial organs at the qinghai, prefecture and county levels, was officially completed along National Highway 315 in Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, which is the first Przewalski's gazelle protection channel in China and the first single species of wild animal life protection channel in Qinghai Province.

"We have set up two large warning signs and speed limit reminder signs at the 186 km to 188 km of National Highway 315. At the same time, 10 small warning signs are also set up on both sides of the village road, relying on the nearby original limited speed detection facilities, and a life safety channel is set up for the highland spirit , The Przewalski's gazelle. Jia Youyang, deputy procurator general of the Haibei Prefecture People's Procuratorate in Qinghai Province, introduced.

Procapraprzewalskii , Oleander , Bovine , Subfamily Antelope , Genus Hartebeest. Discovered and named in 1875 by the Russian naturalist Przewalski. Historically, it has been widely distributed in Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Gansu and Qinghai, with habitat altitudes of about 3200 to 3500 meters, and the number of tens of thousands of animals. However, in the 1960s and 1970s, due to the impact of human activities and habitat deterioration, the range and number of this species decreased sharply, and the population even fell to less than 150 at one point.

Przewalski's gazelle is a representative species of desertified grassland, which is currently only distributed in the Qinghai Lake area in the world, and is known as the "giant panda running on the grassland" due to its scarcity. In 1988, przewalski's gazelle was listed as a national class I protected animal; in 1996 and 1998, it was listed as a critically endangered animal by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red Book; in 1999, it was listed as a critically endangered wild animal by the Chinese government; in 2001, it was listed as one of the 15 animals in urgent need of rescue in the country; and in 2012, it was listed as a critically endangered animal of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Conservation is at a critical stage.

The Hargai area of Gangcha County is the main Przewalski's gazelle habitat, and National Highway 315 crosses it. Due to the lack of necessary warning signs and speed limiting facilities, there have been a number of fatalities in recent years in vehicle collisions with Przewalski's hartebeest. According to incomplete statistics, since 2019 alone, there have been 5 vehicle collisions and deaths of Przewalski's hartebeest, resulting in the death of 5 Przewalski's hartebeests, of which 1 hit-and-run not only caused major losses to the country's precious and endangered wildlife resources, but also posed a major hidden danger to the driving safety of national highways through 315 National Highway.

In order to eliminate the hidden dangers from the root causes, the Haibei Prefecture People's Procuratorate and the Gangcha County People's Procuratorate jointly filed a case against this clue that endangered endangered wild animals, and issued procuratorial suggestions to the Gangcha County Natural Resources Bureau and the Gangcha County Forest Public Security Bureau respectively, and at the same time put forward rectification opinions and suggestions to the Gangcha County Traffic Police Brigade and the Gangcha County Road Administration Law Enforcement Brigade. The Haibei Prefecture People's Procuratorate also presided over a pre-litigation roundtable meeting on the platts antelope protection case, and joined hands with the Gangcha County Natural Resources Bureau, the Road Administration Brigade, the Public Security Traffic Police Brigade, the Forest Public Security Bureau and other administrative units to reach a consensus on their respective duties, actively striving for project funds, setting up protection signs and speed limit facilities, and working together to protect Przewalski's Hartebeest.

"This is a measure of positive significance, and it is also a manifestation of all sectors of society and all walks of life paying attention to ecology and attaching importance to ecology." In 1997, ge Yuxiu, a famous environmentalist, took the first photo of the Przewalski's gazelle near Qinghai Lake, "Herders call it 'Beach Yellow Sheep', in fact, the Przewalski's Gazelle has a Chinese name - the Chinese diagonal antelope, its horns are very symmetrical, and it is the most beautiful one in the antelope." It is also the mascot of the Qinghai Lake International Bicycle Race, and the cartoon 'Duoji' image is deeply loved by everyone. ”

For many years, Ge Yuxiu has been working hard to protect the Przewalski's gazelle and has been promoting the name "Chinese diagonal antelope". He told reporters that in recent years, Qinghai Province has continuously increased the protection of Przewalski's gazelle, and has achieved positive results in resource investigation and research, remote video network monitoring, and field protection.

"In order to solve the problem of drinking water and migration of Przewalski's gazelle in winter, Haiyan County, Gangcha County, Gonghe County, Tianjun County and Qinghai Lake National Nature Reserve Management Bureau have all built drinking water ponds in the area where Przewalski's gazelles are concentrated, and set aside simple passages for special personnel to regularly carry out water storage work." He Yubang, director of the Qinghai Lake National Nature Reserve Management Bureau, introduced that in order to improve the living conditions of przewalski's gazelle, the 4 counties have also removed more than 500,000 meters of fence thorns, and all localities have actively put feed in the distribution area of Przewalski's hartebeest, and Gangcha County has invested more than 100,000 yuan a year and released more than 40 tons of hay, effectively alleviating the phenomenon of "competing for food" between livestock and wild animals.

"In recent years, Qinghai has implemented the Qinghai Lake Basin Ecological Monitoring System Construction Project, and set up a total of 276 ecological monitoring ground positioning monitoring stations within the basin engineering area, and began to provide data for ecological protection and construction. Last year, the "Przewalski's Gazelle Conservation Plan" was completed, and the next 10 years of Przewalski's Gazelle Conservation in Qinghai Province were planned. According to the results of the recently completed 2021 spring Przewalski's gazelle population monitoring, its population has reached more than 2560, an increase of about 9 times in 14 years. He Yubang said that as the ecological environment of the Qinghai Lake basin is getting better and better, the Population of Przewalski's Gazelle will also increase.
