Recipients register as volunteers on site

"Husband, I will live well, I will take my sons well, and grow up healthy."

"Son, I wish you eternal happiness and health. Thinking of your dad. ”

On April 9, the 2021 Guangdong Provincial Human Organ Donation Commemoration Activity with the theme of "The Music of Life, Singing the Continuation of Love" was held in Zhengguo Wan'an Park, Zengcheng, Guangzhou. A number of organ donor family members came to the scene from all over the province, wrote down their infinite thoughts and affection for their deceased loved ones with a pen on the message board, word by word.

Shi Xiandong, executive vice president of the Red Cross Society of Guangdong Province, said that in 2020, there were 818 human organ donors, 641 corneal donors, and 185 remains donors in Guangdong, and the number of organ donation cases was the highest in the country for 11 consecutive years.

From one person to a family

At the scene, the donor Ms. Zhong's husband Gong Yiqun and son Gong Zheng told reporters the story of their family's donation. Ms. Zhong was born into a military family, her grandfather was an old Red Army, and she herself put on a military uniform and dedicated her life to the cause of national defense of the motherland.

"In June 2019, when she went to the hospital for a bleeding gum and found that she had acute myeloid leukemia M5, which has not yet been conquered by humans, we were told that she had only one and a half years left in her life." Gong Yiqun said.

In fact, from the time of her illness, Ms. Zhong had the idea of donating her body. On November 15, 2019, on Ms. Zhong's 60th birthday, she solemnly announced her decision to her family, and then immediately went to the Shenzhen Red Cross Society to register the donation of remains.

Today, Ms. Zhong's name is engraved in the Guangdong Red Cross Memorial Park in Zhengguo Wan'an Garden. Gong Yiqun said that under the inspiration of his wife, he also planned to do voluntary registration for body donation, and his son Gong Zheng also had this idea.

Hopefully more and more people will join

"It's been almost two years since I had my liver transplant and I'm recovering well now. Really grateful to this anonymous donor and his family for giving me a second life. Mr. Xu from Macau said emotionally.

In 2018, Mr. Xu suffered from ascites in the late stage of cirrhosis. He went to the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University to seek medical treatment, and after repeated discussions by the doctor team, liver transplantation was the only way to save lives, but because Mr. Xu was too ill, there was a high risk of surgery.

"We fully informed him of the risks of surgery and he was willing to try." Tan Yali, then a liver transplant doctor at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University and currently the deputy chief physician of liver transplantation at the Organ Transplant Management Office of the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, said that she was Mr. Xu's attending physician.

The operation went smoothly, and now Mr. Xu is able to devote himself to his daily life and work normally.

"For transplant doctors, the greatest comfort is to see the patient alive, which is the biggest motivation that drives us forward." Tan Yali said that she also hopes that more and more people will join the cause of organ donation.

On the day of the event, the Guangdong Provincial Red Cross Society set up a voluntary registration point for human organ donation on the spot, and Mr. Xu signed the volunteer letter on the spot and became a human organ donation volunteer.

Guangdong has donated more than 4,700 organs

As people's understanding of human organ donation continues to deepen, the team of volunteers is getting larger and larger. The reporter learned from the Guangdong Provincial Red Cross Society that since the pilot citizens died in 2010 to donate organs, by the end of 2020, the number of voluntary organ donation registration in the province exceeded 195,000, and the cumulative number of organ donations after the death of citizens was more than 4,700 cases, more than 1,400 cases of body donation, more than 4,000 cases of cornea donation, and the number of voluntary registrations and organ donation cases ranked first in the country.
