Boris (Larry David), a physicist at the University of Chicago who considers himself a genius and is extremely pessimistic about the world and human nature, jumps off a building and attempts suicide after inexplicably breaking up with his wife, quits his job and moves to Manhattan, New York, to teach children chess for a living. One night, she finds Melody (Evan Rachel Wood), a naïve young girl who has run away from home from Mississippi, on her doorstep.
Bryce (Callan McAuliffe) moves to the town and the girl next door, Julie (Madeline Carroll), comes to help. She fell in love with him at first sight, wishing to get his kiss. The two were classmates, and she had been trying to get close to him, but he couldn't avoid it. She loves to climb high plane trees and watch the scenery. But because of the construction, the tree was about to be cut down, and she vowed to defend it to the death, hoping that he would fight alongside him, but he flinched.
Marcello Mastroianni of La Dolce Vita is a magazine columnist who tries to become a writer but backfires and spends his days running for celebrity gossip. Marcello often attends the social receptions of some celebrities, so he secretly hooks up with photographers, designs and shoots celebrities for privacy, and then makes them public. Marcello has a girlfriend, Wonma, who, on her way home, takes a brothel bustard who tells him many anecdotes from the Wind and Moon Field, which makes him even more disgusted with Vanity Fair.
