In the Beiyang government, Duan Qirui was a respectable figure.
He was known as the "Tiger of beiyang", the leader of the Anhui warlords, and the main target of Sun Yat-sen's "Dharma Protection Movement". From 1916 to 1920, Duan Qirui was the de facto ruler of the Beiyang government. From 1924 to 1926, Duan Qirui was the provisional ruler of the Republic of China. After the "9.18" incident, the Japanese coerced Duan Qirui to go to the northeast to organize a puppet government, but Duan sternly refused. On November 2, 1936, Duan Qirui died in Shanghai Hongen Hospital.
He was known as the "Six No Prime Ministers" and "did not smoke, drink, prostitute, gamble, covet, or occupy." During his lifetime, he served four terms as Prime Minister, four terms as Chief of The Army, one as Chief of Staff, and one as Head of State.

The eldest son's name was Duan Hongye. Relying on Duan Qirui's power, Duan Hongye took the name of the Law Enforcement Department of the War Department as a promoter, but basically did not go to work, and he loved to spend his days outside every day eating, drinking, and gambling. The youngest daughter, Duan Huimin, seems to be still alive today, and was once ridiculed by school teachers and classmates for being a descendant of Duan Qirui.
Duan Qirui's youngest son was named Duan Hongfan.
Because Duan Qirui had the family training of "not engaging in business, not engaging in politics and not joining the army", although Duan Hongfan and his wife both graduated from Nankai University, they never had a job and lived on the 2,000 oceans allocated by Chiang Kai-shek every month. After 49 years, his source of livelihood was cut off, and Duan Hongfan went to work as a teacher in a primary school. Duan Hongfan's son, duan changyan, graduated from high school and went to Inner Mongolia to join the team.
When his companion was killed when the warehouse was demolished in 1971, the only request of the family was to bring the body back to Beijing, and he carried the body back to Beijing for 13 days. Duan Qirui's daughters also married very well.
The eldest daughter, Duan Hongshu, married Li Hongzhang's nephew Li Guoyuan. After Duan Qirui stepped down, his family moved to Anhui, and during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, he went to Hong Kong and died of illness very early.
The second daughter, Duan Hongbin, married Zhang Zhihong, a doctor who stayed in the United States, and the two later lived in the United States for a long time. It was not until 2002 that Duan Hongbin, who was 100 years old, died in the United States.
The third daughter, Duan Hongxun, married Yuan Shikai's nephew Yuan Dingxun.
The fourth daughter, Duan Hongjun, married Xi Dongshu, who opened a large trading house in Tianjin, and the business was very large and generous. In 1949, Duan Hongjun and her husband moved to Hong Kong. In 1997, the family immigrated to Canada.
