Tadao Ando's "youth" is a kind of spiritual "end-of-the-text welfare"

author:Artron.com

Youth is a challenge that is not afraid of failure and faces difficulties.

Youth is the tenacious heart of being in the face of adversity and never giving up on dreams.

Youth is not a certain period of life.

Youth is the appearance of the heart.

Ma Weidong, founder of Bunju International, Chinese partner of Tadao Ando Institute of Architecture, and founder of the IAM International Architectural Alliance, said in his speech: "The theme of our exhibition is 'youth', and there is a big green apple at the entrance of the museum. Green Apple is an art installation made by Mr. Ando in recent years. Mr. Ando is 80 years old this year, the age of his old age. Express his lifelong understanding of "youth". Youth is a challenge that is not afraid of failure and faces difficulties. Youth is the whole body that is not afraid of failure and faces difficulties. From Mr. Ando's poems, we can see that Mr. Ando's philosophy of life. In the face of a global pandemic, humanity desperately needs this spirit. China is the most youthful and energetic country in the world, so the driving force that can make the country have youthful vitality is in Beijing. Therefore, the theme of our Beijing exhibition is 'Youth', which is of particular significance. We very much hope that through this exhibition, we can give the world youth power with this kind of youth in China. We also very much hope that through this exhibition, we can let the audience who come to the scene feel the vitality of youth, and in their hearts can be the next seed of youth, which is the purpose of our doing this thing. ”

Liu Linghong, executive vice president and secretary general of the China Architectural Culture Research Association, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony

Liu Linghong, executive vice president and secretary general of the China Architectural Culture Research Association, said in his speech: "Tadao Ando is one of the most active and influential architects in the world across the 20th and 21st centuries, transforming from truck drivers and professional boxers, self-taught architecture, wandering away from the world, deeply cultivating design, losing consecutive battles, and losing consecutive battles. Created architectural landscapes that never tire. Tadao Ando is widely known for his unique life experiences and research on space. Tadao Ando, who has been removed from five internal organs since he was 80 years old and is still working hard to move towards 100 years old, has a more sincere and profound interpretation of his understanding of youth. 'There is nothing left in the world of peace, but only the work of the most virtuous; The world of Taiping has nothing to respect, and the honored ones are only the innovators of the work. A hundred years ago, Kang Youwei interpreted the spirit of craftsmanship and innovation, and also properly interpreted Tadao Ando's persistent belief and legendary life. Glory comes from enduring advances, and Tadao Ando is known as a ghost talent, a poet of shimizu concrete. His work is well known in the architectural world for TOEFL, many of which are deceptively simple but very distinctive. Through the works of streamlined architecture, 1:1 reproductions, a large number of video data models and rich public activities, the exhibition will show the charm of architectural works such as Tadao Ando, one of the most influential architects today, and their never-ending pursuit in life. ”

Li Feng, director of Beijing Minsheng Art Museum, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony

Li Feng, director of the Minsheng Art Museum in Beijing, said in his speech: "Tadao Ando's architectural achievements have been discussed innumerable, and there is no need to repeat them here. He started by designing small-scale buildings, and even though he later became famous, the studio did not become a large-scale, mechanically cold-jawed model. Tadao Ando has become the architect of the world's largest number of design museums and art galleries, and the building he wants to build is not only a place for people to gather, but also a space for people to inspire. All this cannot be achieved without a strong will and extraordinary ability, and mediocrity cannot create a legend. In my opinion, Tadao Ando's listening and respect for personal feelings, and his high regard for the inspection and on-site experience of physical buildings are invaluable. He started from small-scale architecture and saw the big in the small, connecting the building with nature with creative passion and unique work mode. As a result, Tadao Ando realized step by step the pursuit of art based on practicality. These ideas have run through Tadao Ando's life, and knowledge and action have been one. It is like a mirror to today's hot construction sites and projects everywhere in China - we have pursued too much form, forgotten the tolerance and affinity of architecture for people, once too much pursuit of function, and the building itself has no formal beauty except for use. Tadao Ando's significance to China's architectural career, whether it is education or design, is a stone of his mountain, which can be attacked. I believe that through the exhibition "Tadao Ando: Youth", the audience will truly experience the spiritual power that Ando brought to our times - not only to inspire the architectural world, cultural and artistic circles, encourage young people to refresh their understanding of architecture, but also use their legendary experience to give examples and inspiration to countless ordinary people who have dreams and struggle. ”

In his speech, Akihiko Noda, director of the Japan Cultural Center (Japan Foundation for International Exchange) in Beijing, said: "Mr. Ando has created wonderful works not only in Japan, but all over the world, and it can be said that his works transcend national borders. Before the completion of Tadao Ando's Global Life Exhibition in Beijing, the challenge as the subtitle of the exhibition became youth, and I thought that Mr. Ando's attitude would continue to bring more surprises and discoveries to our audience. ”

Mr. Tadao Ando, who failed to arrive at the scene, said in an online speech: "The so-called youth is to think about how to stand in society when a person is twenty or thirty years old. What kind of work you want to do, if you do construction, you will do it through the way of architecture, if you do engineering, if you do economic work, you will think about what you want to contribute to our society. In 1989, he became a self-taught master of architecture, a fighter boxer among the masters transformed from a truck driver and a professional boxer, taught himself architecture, traveled the world, deeply cultivated design, and lost consecutive battles and consecutive defeats, and never tired on the road of creating architectural landscapes. Tadao Ando, an architect known for his unique life experience and spatial endowment, has been breaking the mold since he began his architectural career in 1969, challenging new architectural "geometric" aesthetics and taking clear-water concrete architecture to the extreme.

It is a "meditative space" built to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1995, transcending all religions and sects and embodying world peace. While respecting the original environment, Tadao Ando focused on the theme of "how to let the space express a firm and independent will"; The 1:1 reproduction provides the audience with an opportunity to get close to and feel the design of the master architect. The UNESCO Meditation Space Tadao Ando Institute of Architecture moves to change the depth of view of the master's architectural career Exhibition Space itself is a light and shadow art scene under the cutting of the most powerful "walls" and "columns" in Ando-style geometry. Strolling through it, the audience will be silently immersed in the spiritual world of the giant. Manuscripts drawn on napkins, draft projects on hotel stationery, huge 10-meter sketches, huge models with intricate and exquisite details, world-class cases of topographic phenomenology... It will showcase its design journey and the architectural marvels created with many artists. The exhibition takes a panoramic look back at the legendary life of a self-taught, extensive reader, inspired by travels around the world, and ultimately a generation of master builders. This is the chapel of a church located in a residential area on the outskirts of Ibaraki City, Osaka Prefecture. In the case of small scale and tight funds, the believers, the construction company and the architect who are the clients work together to finally dedicate a chapel with a minimalist shape but a rare and abundant sense of space. "Youth" ——— Samuel Ullman

Youth is not youth, but state of mind; Youth is not peach face, dan lips, soft knees, but a deep will of magnificent imagination, fiery feelings; Youth is the deep spring of life.

Youthful spirit runs through changhong, courage and sharpness overshadow weakness, and enterprising overwhelms Gou An. Such sharpness, born in the twenties, six men are more common. Old age, not old age; Ideals are discarded, and the party falls into the twilight years.

The years are long, and the decline is only about the skin; Enthusiasm is thrown away, and decadence will lead to the soul. Worry, trepidation, and iron self-confidence will surely distort the heart and make the spirit like ashes.

Whether it is the age of flower armor or the age of two or eight, there is the joy of life, the temptation of miracles, and the innocence of a child for a long time. The human soul should be like a vast sea, and only the hundred rivers that constantly accept beauty, hope, joy, courage and strength can stay young forever and the style will last forever.

- When the sea of hearts is exhausted, the sharp qi will be covered with ice and snow, cynical, self-destructive, self-abandoning, even if the age is twenty, the age is dying; However, as long as you are humble and filled with joy, enlightenment, and benevolence, you can hope to feel young when you bid farewell to the dust at the age of eighty.

Translated | Wang Zuoliang

Architecture, a never-ending challenge

Like all man-made objects, one day, the building will be destroyed by weathering. The human attempt to resist this inevitability can also be argued as the history of architecture, and I want to create buildings that live forever in the depths of human memory, rather than merely material or formal existence.

In order to get close to my inner ideals, I began to try to create buildings that were like a plain canvas that removed all embellishments. When this "blank space" is introduced into the wind and light, the space will be injected into life. When this "blank space" is placed in the city, it may trigger an unexpected and exciting puppet art. If this "blank space" is erected against a brick wall engraved with time, there emerges, from the past to the present, to the future, the thickness of time that is babbling together. And when this "blank space" merges into a landscape of the earth, there will be a boundless small universe-like world.

When architecture encounters the objects of the world, it evokes dialogue and exchange between each other. This is the power it appeals to the human soul. How to turn this dialogue into more fundamental and fruitful content? Each project has its own unique context, so the answer is not unique. Because of this, architecture is difficult. Because of this, the architecture is interesting.

Aiming at the architecture of my heart, this never-ending challenge, which I have enjoyed from half a century ago to the present day.

Prototype of the space

From the 1970s to the present, Tadao Ando has been at the forefront of architectural activity. His work is spread around the globe and is widely acclaimed for its spatial quality and particular fit for its place. Its biggest feature is Tadao Ando's consistent design ideas. From the root themes of light and geometry extracted from the early residential works, to the urban architectural techniques that imply the traditional Japanese concept of space "ma" (pronounced "ma" in Japanese), to the regionalist architecture that echoes the context of the venue to establish new relationships, the ingenious Section 1 collects Tadao Ando's works from 1969 to the mid-1990s, from which we can find the prototype of these spaces and directly attack the essence of Tadao Ando's thinking that continues to this day.

During the period of self-study, the world wandered

For Tadao Ando, who chose to embark on the path of architecture through self-study, the "trip" that allows him to visit the buildings and streets of various places and give him a real "school" is the real "school". In particular, before starting the design activities, Tadao Ando traveled to many countries to study, which had a profound impact on his architectural conception. During the "trip", Tadao Ando saw and thought of something, and we can glimpse some clues from the manuscripts he left behind.

Tadao Ando's early masterpiece was also the opportunity for him to emerge as a world-class architect. Three longhouses in the civilian district of Osaka share a structural system, and Tadao Ando transformed the middle building into a building with a patio. With extremely small land and floor areas, Tadao Ando deliberately built an atrium in the center of the building to provide a breathing place for people living in the city. "Sumiyoshi's Longhouse - East House" is the origin of Tadao Ando's architecture.

The side of the house as a "fortress" for individuals in the city is vividly illustrated. Among them, only the "Urban Guerrilla Warfare Residence III Tomishima House" became a reality, which was also the first work actually completed by Tadao Ando as an architect.

On the east side of the building there is a stairwell that runs through the entire building, and the side of each floor facing this vertical space is gradually retracted in a phased manner. The challenge of the city

Since the beginning of his architectural activities as an "urban guerrilla", Tadao Ando has made an impact on the architectural world with many avant-garde works, and after the mid-1990s, the scale of projects involved has gradually increased, and it has become more diversified and public. If his work in various areas is to be evaluated, the benchmark should be the challenge to the city. In the 1970s, Tadao Ando challenged cities from the "grassroots" through small residential and commercial buildings, etc., how did he develop the unchanging spirit of struggle in the world-famous metropolis? Section 2 will focus on Tadao Ando's projects in various cities in China to introduce his achievements in challenging cities.

The creation of landscapes

Looking at Tadao Ando's works on public architecture, the theme of Section 3 is "The Creation of Landscapes" in contrast to the "Challenges of the City" in Section 2. The landscape or landscape mentioned here is not a landscape design in the simple sense, but a concept that encompasses multiple values, including the community memory of the place. Tadao Ando, after carefully pondering the meaning of the landscape, uses his original architectural techniques to highlight its characteristics and give new value to the place. The most widely practiced method of this architectural technique is the 30-year-long Naoshima series of projects.

Naoshima

The Naoshima series of projects is a symbol of Tadao Ando's architectural ideas, a place that is constructed beyond the framework of architecture. In the seven projects completed since 1987, Tadao Ando has always pursued the idea of hiding architectural geometric ideas in the terrain, in which the boundaries between the inside and outside are broken, forming a changing image of an artistic space. It is worth mentioning that this magnificent project is carried out in the absence of a master plan, according to the specific steps of the specific situation, like biological reproduction. The accumulation of dialogue between humans and art, the nature and terroir of the place is the driving force behind the cultivation of this nameless island as a world art mecca. In 2021, Tadao Ando is also working on two projects.

Dialogue with history

Tadao Ando classified his work as contextual, emphasizing that his own existence was only part of the historical connection of architecture. Perhaps the best expression of this attitude is his project of this type of project with the theme of ancient architectural reconstruction. Tadao Ando pays homage to the time engraved in the original building, and while doing his best to preserve it as a memory, he intends to reveal a new modern space inside, stimulate dialogue between old and new, and make people look forward to the power contained in it to connect time from ancient to modern. From unfinished projects in the late 1980s to the latest works completed in 2021 on the Paris Stock Exchange, Tadao Ando's renovation projects are presented in great detail in Section 4.

With François. Pinault collaborated on a project

The collaboration between France's iconic industrialist François Pino and the architect Tadao Ando began with the "Pino Museum of Contemporary Art" project in Paris at the beginning of the 21st century. The project was interrupted due to various circumstances, but Pino eventually decided to continue the construction of the museum project and moved the location to Venice, Italy, where Tadao Ando designed the "Gracie", "Customs House", and "Theater". Later, in 2016, he once again challenged the construction of the art museum in Paris. That is the "stock exchange" that will open in 2021.

Venice, Veneto, Italy, 2006-2009

The historic Custom House is located opposite St. Mark's Square, and Tadao Ando converted it into a museum of modern art. The design completely reduces the building to what it was when it was built in the 15th century, inserting only a space enclosed by clear-water concrete walls in the center. In the light pouring down from above, the past and the present confront each other, resulting in a dialogue between the old and the new, which is also a symbol of the spirit of the building.

The building on the site of the old Central Market in Paris was once a grain exchange, which Tadao Ando converted into an art gallery. This is also the second challenge that the pair of François Pinault and Tadao Ando has launched in Paris. In this project, Tadao Ando still uses the dialogue between the old and the new as the theme of his design, and he inserts it in the rotunda inside the building – a cylindrical space 10m high and 30m in diameter – thus forming a bold box-like spatial structure.
