Is euthanasia really painless? If terminally ill patients can leave with dignity, why doesn't China practice euthanasia really not be painful? Why can't China legalize euthanasia? Fourth, "good death" and "living", how should we choose?

Minako Kojima's choice of euthanasia has once again aroused the heated discussion of many people.

Minako Kojima was born in an ordinary family in Japan, with a very happy family and a sister with a particularly good relationship. Growing up, she and her sister were intimate, and even after the two of them grew up and had their own families, Minako Kojima was the first to appear when she had difficulties.

Minako Kojima and her sister went around the world together after retirement, doing everything they hadn't done when they were younger. However, the weather is unpredictable, and Minako Kojima suffers from multisystem atrophy. The disease causes the patient's body to gradually shrink until the body is completely stiff and unable to move. At present, this problem has not been overcome clinically, and once the disease is sick, it can only wait for death.

In the early days of the illness, Minako Kojima maintained a good attitude and even went on a trip with her sister. But as the disease progresses, more and more parts of the body shrink. Minako Kojima feels more and more hopeless, living every day is very painful, and her sister takes care of her very hard.

In order to make her sister and herself happy, Minako Kojima chose euthanasia, and she and her family went to Switzerland for euthanasia... On the operating table, it took only 4 minutes for Minako Kojima to leave the world.

In many people's minds, euthanasia is painless, but is it true?

Let's start with the principle of euthanasia.

There are currently three types of euthanasia currently practiced clinically:

Oral sleeping pills

This method of euthanasia mainly uses oral sleeping pills to put the patient to sleep, and then injects the patient with a central anesthetic with respiratory suppression effect, and generally uses some powerful sedative drugs that cause suffocation.

Strong anesthetics can suppress the respiratory system in the body, and eventually the breathing stops and dies. Some central inhibitory anesthetics act on the respiratory neurons of the spinal cord and neck and thoracic segment of the human body, so that the respiratory neurons cannot perform exhalation, resulting in asphyxiation and death.

Injection of coagulant

Injection of coagulants is also to put the patient to sleep first, generally using anesthetics, and then using coagulants after the anesthetics to block the patient's veins.

Coagulants are coagulation factors that act on human blood proteins, causing blood to clot into blood clots and causing blood vessel blockage. Under the action of coagulants, coagulation factors in the body will be active, and they will coagulate in the blood vessels to block blood flow and cause death.

Injection of cyanide

Cyanide is a poison that causes the exhaled oxygen to not be combined with hydrogen to become water, and the body can no longer secrete Coenzyme I, and excess oxygen in the body will cause cells in the body to be unable to breathe, eventually causing heart failure and leading to death.

These forms of euthanasia all look serene and can allow people to die quickly while asleep. But this may not be the case, because there will be a certain gap between the theory and the actual injection, about 40% of the people who undergo euthanasia are not completely anesthetized, these people will realize that they are slowly dying, but the body can not move, scream, on the surface can not see anything, in the few minutes of waiting for death, will feel extremely terrible pain.

But these feelings are only a theoretical statement, and it can only be said that there may be a situation in which euthanasia is not as "comforting" as we think.

On March 18, 2021, Spain became the sixth country in the world to legalize euthanasia, and the discussion of euthanasia in Spain began in the 1980s and lasted about 40 years. In the issue of euthanasia, there are many different individuals who continue to fight, and are closely entangled with political, medical, moral and other issues, so that all sectors of society have a new understanding of life and death...

On March 18, local time, the issue of euthanasia was passed in 2021, and the adoption of the proposal was written by some people who were happy and some who thought that they could finally die with dignity. Some people also find it simply incomprehensible and too unethical.

There are also many different views on euthanasia in our country, which is still not legal in our country.

3. Why can't China legalize euthanasia?

In 1986, the first case of euthanasia in China occurred in Hanzhong, Shaanxi Province, Dr. Pu Liansheng could not withstand the kneeling request of the patient's son and sister, signed an agreement with the patient's family when he learned that the patient could not be treated, and euthanized his mother after a unified prescription drug.

Who knew that three months after the death of the patient was euthanized, Pu Liansheng was arrested, and after his arrest, after five years of multiple trials, he was finally acquitted.

After returning to the hospital, Pu Liansheng's life was not good, and the hospital complained about him. This made Pu Liansheng regret the decision he made at that time, and in an interview, Pu Liansheng said that he knew that this situation would happen, and that he would not euthanize the patient if he gave him 1 million at that time.

The reason why euthanasia cannot be legalized in our country is mainly related to these reasons:

1. Contrary to human morality

In our country, there has always been a tradition of filial piety first, and under the guidance of this concept, the family is terminally ill, and even if the family is ruined, it will be fully cured. If euthanasia is carried out for terminally ill family members, it will be condemned by the people around them, and henceforth bear the name of filial piety, and the traditional concept of our country makes euthanasia impossible to legalize in our country.

2. There is no social basis in our country

At present, China is still a developing country, and the medical security system is not perfect, especially in some rural areas, there is basically no sound medical insurance. In these regions, euthanasia lacks a real social basis, and there is a big difference between our country and some countries where euthanasia is legalized.

3, euthanasia has no chance of regret

Once euthanasia is chosen, there is no chance of regret. Euthanasia only takes a few minutes to make people die, what if you regret it in those few minutes? There is no regret medicine to eat, especially some cases that are not completely anesthetized, and the consciousness is still there to perceive that they are gradually dying, as long as you think about it, you will feel terrible! But once euthanasia is legalized, for some people who die impulsively, once they decide, there is no chance of regret, and this will cause a lot of social problems.

4, "good death", "lai live", how should we choose?

It is better to die than to live This is a common saying in our country, which basically means that there is nothing when you die, but there is still hope in life, as long as you live, you can "earn".

For this sentence, many people support it, but many people oppose it.

But this statement is actually a bit one-sided, for some people who are terminally ill and have a lot of pain every day, there may be some people who want to choose "good death", but there are also some people in these groups who would rather let themselves bear pain, but also to accompany their families, and the time with their families is the most important in his life, physical pain can be endured, and the choice of such people is to "live".

Euthanasia cannot be absolutely correct in this matter, from a legal point of view, how should it make a value trade-off? Under what conditions can be used to determine whether euthanasia can be achieved, and what is the criterion for this? Are people who choose euthanasia voluntarily? How can we use the law to regulate euthanasia and avoid moral problems and criminal acts?

On the issue of euthanasia, it may not be legal in China in a short period of time, because China's social foundation and traditional ideas are all "impossible to cross" on the legal road of euthanasia.
