Dr Yung Sai Shing, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Chinese, National University of Singapore, gave a lecture entitled "Who is Ren Jianhui?" ": From the reader's mailbox of "Yilin" to see the Cantonese opera "Fan Culture" in the 1930s, it is pointed out that in recent years, the academic community's discussion of Ren Jianhui has mainly focused on the 1950s and 1960s. His research focused on the "reader's mailbox" letters of Hong Kong's Yilin magazine from 1937 to 1940, observing the "way of speaking" and "star-chasing behavior" of Cantonese opera fans during this period, tracking the "idolization" process of Ren Jianhui during the female class, especially the study of actors who were loved by female audiences and became "the most admired and admired by audiences".
Dr Lee Siu Leung, Associate Professor of the Department of Cultural Studies at Lingnan University, in his lecture entitled "Ren Jianhui's Fashion Films: The Shaping of Transgender Identities and Modernity", believes that Ren Jianhui's fashion films are mainly women playing men, but there are also female characters, which are naturally in and out of the framework of the two sexes, presenting Hong Kong's wandering hermaphrodites in the film category in the 1950s and 1960s, entering the historical moment of modernity, and integrating the gender cultural practices of traditional opera that are still strong in the present.
