Does aluminum in packaging cause food itself to exceed aluminum standards? What hazards may "aluminum" cause to human health?

In daily life, the close relationship between food packaging and food has long been recognized. Whether it is a shopping mall, a supermarket or every home, you can see beautifully designed, practical and convenient food packaging everywhere.

In fact, food packaging is like food intimate clothing, it not only plays a role in protecting food from foreign factors from contamination or damage to food, but also facilitates the storage, transportation and sale of food.

In order to ensure the safety of the use of food packaging materials, China not only has formulated strict national food safety standards for each food packaging material and its products, but also formulated corresponding use standards for processing aids allowed to be used in food packaging materials, and strictly restricts the scope and amount of use of each processing aid.

Aluminum is one of the "trace elements that are potentially toxic, but at low doses, may have essential functions for the human body" and do not cause acute poisoning. However, studies have found that prolonged ingestion of aluminum produces chronic toxicity, and the nervous system is the main target organ for the toxic effects of aluminum.

Excessive intake of aluminum can cause organic lesions in brain tissue, leading to memory decline, slow movement, and even dementia, which is one of the culprits of Senile Dementia.

In addition, aluminum may also cause osteoporosis, prone to fractures; reduce the body's immune function; lead to non-iron deficiency anemia.

Aluminum exceeding the standard has a greater impact on children, because aluminum will affect calcium and phosphorus metabolism, which will have a certain impact on children's growth and development, affect the growth of children's bones, and will also cause impaired neurodevelopment of infants and young children leading to intellectual development disorders.

There is currently no evidence that aluminum is carcinogenic, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) believes that aluminum is not a human carcinogen.

Given the health hazards of excessive intake of aluminium, the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has set the allowable intake of aluminum at 2 mg per kilogram of body weight per week.

Although China canceled the index of aluminum in the pollutant limit standard, in the "Food Additive Use Standard GB2760-2014", the aluminum-containing food additives were re-evaluated, the three food additives such as acidic aluminum phosphate, sodium silicoaluminate and aluminum starch octenylsuccinate were withdrawn, the scope of use of potassium aluminum sulfate and aluminum ammonium aluminum sulfate was adjusted, and the aluminum-containing food additives that were previously used in flour products were reduced to only be used in fried noodle products. It is clearly stipulated that the residual amount of aluminum in soy products, fried noodle products, baked goods, shrimp flakes and frying powder is less than or equal to 100 mg/kg, and the residual amount in ready-to-eat jellyfish is less than 500 mg/kg.
