My memoirs of Kyo-il

Lin Haiyin

Where is the former residence?

Since I opened up to visiting relatives on the mainland, when my relatives and friends saw me, they would ask me if I wanted to go to the mainland to visit the old and former residences of relatives and friends. In the past ten years, I have communicated with relatives and friends on the mainland, and in the past two or three years, I have met with my only third sister mother and daughter who remained on the mainland and my sister-in-law and brother-in-law, my grandson Chengyao, in Hong Kong, and have corresponded frequently. The younger generations in the United States- sons, daughters-in-law, son-in-law, and nephews have also been to the mainland and have seen their families, and the situation of each family member's relatives and friends is probably known, so they are not busy meeting each other for a while. As for the place, I often laugh at my relatives and friends in this place and say: "Beiping even has no city walls, what will I go back to see?" Just as my friend Hou Rongsheng returned to the mainland to visit his relatives ten years ago, he came back to write an article that I remember most clearly and felt the same way, she said: "What about my city wall?" In just five words, I almost cried out as I read it.

But recently, it has been a hot topic, so that the scenery of Beijing, childhood, and characters have come to me, surrounding me, and I don't know which one is good to remember. In the past, writing, no matter the content of novels, essays, and the use of words, was always "Jingweier", and I have lived there for twenty-six years! This time, I was going to put this kind of work, which had not yet been collected, to produce a special collection, thinking that there were still many memories that had not been recorded, and I planned to write it again, but where to start? My juniors, as well as relatives and friends on the mainland, have sent me photos of the streets where I lived, my former residence, my alma mater, etc., and although some of them can no longer be confirmed, they have also given me many memories. A cousin read about the streets, businesses, etc. written in my works, and actually went to find a photo and sent it to me, which really made me grateful and moved. So why don't I record the order from the place where I lived in Beijing - Beiping - Beijing - Beiping - Zhushikou - Tsubaki Tree Ertiao - Xin curtain Hutong - Hufang Bridge - Xijiaomin Lane - Liangjiayuan - Nanliu Lane - Yongguang Temple Street - Nanchang Street!

Pearl City Mouth

In 1922, my father settled his career in Beijing and returned to Taiwan to pick up my mother and me in Beijing, when I was five years old and wearing a small kimono. At that time, he temporarily lived in the Qian'an Inn in Xizhu City, which could be lived for a long time, temporarily, single or with relatives. Zhushikou was divided into east and west, bounded by Zhengyangmen Avenue, and was a bustling and lively urban area at that time, because Beijing was the capital at that time, and the Northern Expedition had not yet succeeded. Beijing is square and square, the city is divided into inside and outside, all the prosperity is in the outer city south of Zhengyang Gate, so hotels, theaters, large businesses, and eight hutong brothels are all outside the front gate (that is, Zhengyang Gate).

The Qian'an Inn where we were staying temporarily was next to the famous first stage in Beijing, and I caught up with a big obligatory play in Beijing, and I didn't remember anything, only that there was a boy Who was a martial artist, Li Wanchun. Talking to his little brother Li Huanchun in Taiwan, Huan Chun said: "When you watch my eldest brother's play, I don't know where it is!" "Meaning, he wasn't born yet!"

Walking west from qian'an inn, there is Hufang Bridge, LuomaShi, and the lively street of Nancheng. Zhushikou to the south, not far from the south of the city, such as the Amusement Park, the Overpass, the Temple of Heaven and other places, nearby is the eight hutongs - the concentration of brothels, the day is cold and clear, the lights are on, each brothel is illuminated like daylight, the prostitute's name tag is hung out, and the frame is decorated with small colored light bulbs with dai yu, green beads, green rings and other flower names. At this time, the whole city was quiet, only the eight hutongs were bustling with traffic in front of the door, and there were many self-used foreign cars with four double-lit headlights, which were all the dignitaries of the Beiyang government era at that time. The high-level brothels are called "Qing Yin XiaoBan", most of them are Suzhou people, and the "second-class tea room" is the Northern Rouge. When the Northern Expedition was successful and the capital was moved to Nanjing, the eight hutongs had no real name and had completely become historical terms.

There are two trees on the Tsubaki tree

Soon after staying at the Qian'an Inn, he moved to Tsubaki Nijo. This was the first time I grew up in Beijing and started my life. In fact, this is the back entrance of the Yongchun Hall, the main entrance is in the Tsubaki tree headline, here another back door in and out, separated by a large courtyard in the middle, there is a locust tree in the yard, in the summer locust tree blossoms, chirping birds (cicadas) call, the tree hangs down many locust tree insects like silkworms, commonly known as hanging ghosts; faint green like locust tree flowers the same color. It was also my first nature toy. Prepare a glass bottle, a pair of chopsticks, and put the hanged ghost down and put it in the bottle to watch. Look at the squirming group, it is really numb, I don't know why we children like such things?

In Tsubaki Nijo, I began my life as a little girl in Beijing, I began to wear leather-headed cloth shoes, began to wear socks, began to drink bean juice, began to eat shabu lamb (all of which my mother had never eaten in her life with her nose pinched), and also began to receive a new Chinese education in the first grade of the Dafu Primary School.

Of course, my father also began to discipline me strictly, not allowing me to be late and not allowing me to take a foreign car to school. When I got up in the morning, my mother tied me a small yellow braid like a dog's tail, carried a school bag with the word "school bag" on it on the yellow cloth, and walked out of the house. There were little black dogs in the alley chasing me two steps, afraid that it would bite my heels. Out of the Tsubaki tree two, through the horizontal alley, walk a section of deer horn alley, to the West LiuliChang, the first thing you see is the lamb bed slaughtered live sheep bloody fell at the door, frightened to dodge past, to the factory to turn north for a while is to face the shida attached small. I felt happy and warm in the morning light, but the first time my father let me go to school, how scared I was. I knew that I had to go hard, this was the first education my father gave me in my life, and I had to learn to "be my own" in everything.

In Tsubaki Tree Nijo, my mother brought me the third sister Yanzhu and the younger brother Yansheng, and the arrival of the younger brother was a happy event for the Lin family, because I had two half-sisters and two sisters staying in Taiwan, at this time my father already had five daughters, and it was very important for this brother to come to the human world. All the children my mother gave birth to in Beijing have a "Swallow" character on their names.

Mama Song, an important figure in the writing of "Seongnam Old Things", also became his wet nurse after his brother was born.

At that time, the daily necessities in the family were often bought at the land temple on xiaxiao Street, and the day of the temple fair seemed to be every third bar. I went to the Land Temple with my mother and Aunt Song, and they bought supplies, brooms, dustpans, or whatever, and I ate enemas and grilled cakes (I still drooled when I think of that food), or I played the game of snare that I could never even put on a small mud dog.

At this time, the family changed from three to six, and the two houses on the Tsubaki tree seemed to be not enough to live, so my father entrusted the postman who delivered the letter to find a house, because my father was already working at the Beijing Post Office at this time. Prior to this, he worked at the Japanese newspaper Kyojin-Nichiren News.

New curtain alley

The new curtain hutong is in the inner city, when I first moved, I went to school in Changdian, I had to walk along Shuncheng Street out of Shunzhi Gate (also called Xuanwu Gate), and then walk along the West River to the school, then the road was far away, I couldn't walk to school, so I chartered a foreign car to pick me up every day. But soon after, a new gate was opened between the Zhengyang Gate and the Xuanwu Gate, which was first called Xinghua Gate and later Heping Gate. The city wall has not been opened, people can walk through, which gives primary school students a big pleasure, every day to go to school through the folded city wall piled up by the city brick mound, rugged and uneven jumping around, there is a sense of caution, choice, completion of the fearless difficulty of it! I like to walk out of the new curtain alley in the Peace Gate where I live every day, walk a section of the street, cross the Peace Gate, and then go to the school on South Xinhua Street, and never take a foreign car around Xuanwu Gate again.

The home of the new curtain hutong is a dead end because it is a dead end of the alley, so it is very quiet, every day after I leave the school bag after school, I will take my younger brothers and sisters to the street with my younger brothers and sisters to watch the liveliness, or when I return from school, My mother and brother and sister are already standing at the door "selling stupid" waiting for me.

When Mama Song was at the door, she took a small bench, which was not the kind of way people described the big girl of Beiping standing at the door and "selling stupid children". There is more than one small bench, because the younger brother and sister also have to sit, Song Mama taught the younger brothers and sisters to read the song, and when they saw me come back, they would read to me: "Pull the big saw, pull the big saw, sing a big drama in front of my grandmother's house." First set up a shed, then color, lamb buns swing upwards. Pick up the girl, ask the son-in-law, and the little grandson will also go. Everyone's girls have come, but my girls haven't come yet. Talking and coming, riding a donkey, with an umbrella, bare ass, and a bun. ”

We go to the street to see the bustle, because if there is a big funeral in Beijing, this is often the only way to go. The funeral procession can be several miles long, enough for you to watch for two hours.

Hufang Bridge

In the residence in Beijing, there are only two times to live on the street, Qian'an Inn does not count, Hufang Bridge is called the street, South Long Street is the main street, and Xijiaomin Lane is smaller than the street and larger than the hutong. Hufang Bridge is the most memorable place for me to grow up, when my second sister was also sent from Taiwan to Beijing, and my mother gave birth to four sisters and five sisters in Hufang Bridge, the family population is prosperous, Hufang Bridge Street is also colorful, I have this place as the background in "Old Things in the South of the City" and other short memories, or special articles recorded. My second sister was eight years old when she arrived and was due to enter the second grade of primary school, but she did not understand her speech and had not read a book, so she inserted herself into the first grade of the Eighth Elementary School (later called Hufangqiao Elementary School) next door. One day she came back from school and said to her mother, "The teacher told me to take Confucius tomorrow." "Mother wondered, how can it be called taking Confucius Gong?" It turned out that the teacher was asking to take the notice book, and she heard confucius gong in Taiwanese harmonics. She knew Confucius Gong because Taiwan also respected Confucius and called Confucius Gong.

This three-entry big house in Hufang Bridge was originally the Jiaoling Guild Hall in Guangdong, my Lin family was the first to move from Guangdong Touling to Taiwan seven generations ago, and my grandfather returned to the Jiaoling Ancestral Hall every year before his death, so my father was very familiar with the Hakka family in Beijing, and rented the whole hall of the Jiaoling Guild Hall. There are many provincial halls in Beijing, all of which are inhabited by students from all over the Qing Dynasty who went to Beijing to take the examination, and there was no examination after the Republic of China, although there are still students from various provinces living in the guild halls, there are also many rented homes for people, so that they can have income for the cost of managing the guild halls.

Father loves to be beautiful and clean, the oil brush of the Jiaoling Guild Hall is sorted out, at that time, my father had a wide range of friends, the family population was large, we already had six sisters and brothers, plus the coachman, Song Mama and another nursing mother, there were eleven people in the family. On weekends, there are always guests to play, and my mother mostly goes to the Guang'an Market on Guang'anmen Avenue to buy vegetables every day, and fish and shrimp go to the West River to buy. In the spring, there are carts at the entrance to sell yellow croakers and shrimp, and the green vegetables have the whole car of red stem green spinach. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, the royal family talked about it, saying that the Western Empress fled abroad, there was nothing to eat in the countryside, and one day the imperial kitchen came up with a dish. Empress Xi had never seen one hundred and eighty dishes a day in her palace, and it was not difficult to eat, so she asked what kind of dish it was, and the imperial chef pondered for a moment, found a good and auspicious sentence, and said: "Empress Lafayette, this is a gold-encrusted white jade plate red-billed green parrot brother!" "It turned out to be just fried tofu roasted spinach, which is this kind of red and green spinach."

I live in Hufang Bridge, I am already in the third and fourth grades, and I am still a day school every day, this time in the opposite direction of living in the new curtain alley. To go to school is from Hufangqiao Street to the Jinghua Printing House to the north to turn away a South Xinhua Street, through the Zangjia Bridge, large and small sand garden and other intersections, to Changdian, Haiwang Village straight down, is attached to the small. I remember that there is a Shu zhen number at the mouth of the sand garden, specializing in dry goods, they make their own dried spicy radish, the color is red and white, spicy, delicious, I often bought a pack, did not wait for home on the road to open and pinch one, one to eat. There is another small southern restaurant, do not want to go home to eat at noon, just eat moldy dried vegetables minced buns in this restaurant, each time just eat three large pieces or add a bowl of soup a total of five large pieces, and do not have to pay cash, recorded on a small fold, monthly accounting.

At this time, it was the time of the Northern Expedition to "make a revolution", and it was also the time when the new cultural movement and the women's liberation movement reached their extreme, many girls cut their braids, and I saw students with new haircuts every day in my attached elementary school. Director Fu Xiaohan couldn't help but summon all the students to the auditorium to explain the big truth that "the body hair and skin cannot be destroyed by the parents", but the tide of time came, I could not stop it, I also cut my hair, although I was scared, fortunately my father saw it and did not say anything. But the problem with the uniform was so serious that it caused me so much pain that we moved again.

Xijiaomin Lane

People who know Beijing's Dongjiaomin Lane know that it is the embassy district. Xijiaomin Lane is not as beautiful as Dongjiaomin Lane, but because it is a banking area, it is also very tidy, my home is opposite the Bank of China, my father told me to go to Japan Zhengjin Bank to withdraw money, it is in Dongjiaomin Lane. When I was young, I had a bank book in my hand and a handful of sweat. My father told me to go and get the "Golden Three Picking Circle", was it intentional to train me? Since then, I have had to work hard in everything, and my father left us early, thanks to my strict training as the eldest sister, I did not know the height of the sky, and I was not afraid of anything.

When it comes to uniforms, our school used to wear Chinese right cardigan skirts or coats. The new trend came, the school changed the style of uniform, it was a dress lapel, and the material was still moon white bamboo cloth. My father was really unreasonable, he said that wearing such a poor material and style like a foreign beggar, I had to wear a Chinese bamboo coat. How can a uniform not be worn! My mother was also afraid of her father, she came up with an idea, every day let me wear the uniform inside, coat bamboo cloth coat, when I got to school, I first took off the coat and folded it in the communication room, and then went to the classroom to go to class, and then put on the coat in the communication room after school. How long this has been around, I don't remember.

Mama Song often took her brother and sister and took a small bench to sit in the shade of the Bank of China opposite, waiting for me and my second sister to come back from school. At this time, the second sister was still in the eighth primary school of Hufang Bridge. We had to cross the Peace Gate every day, I first went to the attached elementary school, and then she walked all the way down South Xinhua Street, and then turned a little way to the east of Hufangqiao Street.

Next door to us was a Muslim surgeon, Zhao Bingnan, who practiced medicine, and his father became a friend of the neighborhood. I remember that my family had a hand-cranked Japanese phonograph, a small record, singing out the Japanese children's song "Momotaro" or something, Dr. Zhao found it interesting, and borrowed it to listen to. Later, we moved away from Xijiaomin Lane, and he also moved to a bungalow opposite. So I was deeply impressed by him, it was my fifth sister Yan Yue had a year of sensitive and full of pimples on her face, Western medicine could not, so I went to Zhao Bingnan for treatment, applied the ointment he gave (small flat box), and soon a layer of scabs, after falling off is a beautiful white and clean little face. Years later, when Zoe was three years old, she had a hernia, and the pediatric anesthesia doctor was finally going to operate, and I was worried. That morning, when the Shangma Doctor's Clinic passed through Xijiaomin Lane and saw Zhao Bingnan's sign, I suddenly had a stroke of genius, stopped down and registered with the door, and could not cure the hernia. He said very kindly, "But someone has come to treat it." "I took it in and showed it to Dr. Zhao and told him that we were once a neighbor's business." He was very happy to hear it, and gave the ointment that was still a small flat box. The swelling and water-storing hernia, sure enough, disappeared and healed within a few times. Therefore, he was deeply impressed by Zhao Bingnan.

A few years ago (more than a decade ago), I saw a report overseas that Zhao Bingnan had become a famous doctor on the mainland, and was no longer called "look at the knots" by ordinary people. The incurable diseases he treated were not only like my sister's pimples on her face or my son's small intestinal hernia, what rat sores, wet scabies, digging bullets... He had cured all kinds of strange diseases. Born into a family of workers in a pastry shop, he was an apprentice at the age of fourteen in a Deshan infirmary in Beijing, working twenty hours a day. One day he was making plaster, while stirring the ointment with a stick, while stumbling to sleep, one hand accidentally inserted into the hot ointment pot, the skin on the hand was completely scalded off, the pain was unbearable, so he had to take some ice chips and sprinkle it on it. Who knew that the boss saw it, grabbed the ice chips, and beat him up. Perhaps stimulated by this, he studied hard at a young age and finally mastered some surgical techniques. After his old age, he also published a 300,000-word book of "Zhao Bingnan's Clinical Experience".

When I lived in Xijiaomin Lane, I was in the fifth grade of elementary school. In the house next to my home in a certain year, the three words "Gospel Hall" were suddenly found on the wall of the white powder door, and every weekend, like a class, foreigners preached. My father asked me to listen, and he thought maybe he could learn some English! In fact, I liked the pictures sent there, and I didn't learn a word in English, but I learned a song like this: "Jesus loves me so well, because there is a holy book that tells me that all children shepherd sheep..."

There is also often a team of Salvation Army missionaries on the streets, just in the open space in front of the Bank of China, they are also foreign devils, wearing the gray uniforms of the Salvation Army. The purple collar has the word "Salvation Army" on it, and when they hear the sound of the musical instruments (drums) they use, the children of each family run outside, watching the bustle around them, listening to the mission, who really goes to believe in the religion!

At this time, my father was hospitalized with lung disease, and he was admitted to the German hospital, the Rihua Tongren Hospital. He died when we moved to Liang's home again.

Beam Homestead

Liang Jiayuan's home is two stories high, which is rare in the southern city of Beijing. Out of the south exit is the lively Luomashi Street, it is very convenient to buy daily necessities, famous shops such as Fozhao Lou, Yifengxiang, Xihe Niantang are in this area. Opposite the north entrance is the Nineteenth Elementary School (later called Liangjiayuan Primary School), my second, third sister and younger brother are all enrolled in this primary school, and it is very convenient to enter and exit. I remember looking out over the roof deck at the big playground in front of the classroom. Unfortunately, my father was seriously ill at this time, and finally died at the age of forty-four at the Nichiwa Tongren Hospital in Higashidan Sanjo. Before his death, his father was cremated and the ashes were brought back to Taiwan. Moreover, he also instructed that the urn should not be casually placed in the suitcase, but must be held in hand. The father was cremated at the Japanese crematorium, and the Japanese monk recited the sutra. But when doing seven, it is the use of Beijing rules, burning paper paste, building ship characters, etc. Since then, we have lived in a foreign country that is not unfamiliar, Beiping, and our widowed mothers have lived together.

After my father died, my grandfather sent several letters asking us to return to Taiwan, and I was only in the first year of junior high school, but first I refused, and I said that I would not go back to study Japanese books! The younger brothers and sisters with the word "Yan" in their names know nothing about Taiwan, and the mother, I know that she has lived so many years of free life in Beijing, she is a Taipei Banqiao person, she speaks Minnan dialect, her father is the first Hakka family, the mother has spent two years in the Hakka village as a hard-working daughter-in-law, she is a foot,Short, and she also has to carry her children on her back to the stove in turns, how can she compare with those aunts and aunts of bigfoot films, how is she willing to go back! Well, when my eldest daughter said this, she obeyed us and was so happy that she couldn't go back.

South Willow Lane

Even so, in order to save money, he moved to the Jinjiang Guild Hall at No. 55 Nanliu Lane, and did not have to pay rent for the house. Although we are not from Jinjiang, our mother's ancestors immigrated to Taiwan from Tong'an, Fujian.

In Beiping, we know friends, fellow villagers, who speak Hokkien dialect, more than hakka, so although life is more difficult, but not lonely, we have many sisters, every day to and from school around the mother to live, she washes and cooks for us, cooks our favorite meals.

Her dishes are Taiwanese cuisine, Hakka cuisine, many green vegetables such as leeks, lettuce leaves, spinach and so on, all boiled in boiling water dipped in Japanese swastika soy sauce. She is also good at roasting five willow fish, roasted pork belly with garlic, fried pork liver, pork heart, ginger shredded fried pork lung, etc., which were originally Taiwanese or Hakka dishes. I have another set of Beijing food, of course, mainly noodles, dumplings, pies, leek baskets, noodles with fried sauce, pancake rolls with green onions, fried leeks and soybean sprouts and so on. Under such a dietary hobby, I learned to help Mama Song roll out the skin and wrap the dumplings from a young age, and burn the box with a hot stove. I like to do it because I love to eat it!

When it comes to eating, I would like to "interject" it, when I live in Xijiaomin Lane, I go home to eat at noon every day, see that the rice is good, the dish is not fried, I am anxious to jump to my feet, afraid of being late for school in the afternoon. My mother poured refined lard and Japanese swastika soy sauce on the steaming rice cooked in Kyoshi rice, which tasted sweet, sweet, and fragrant, not to mention how delicious it was. But after half a year, our children who went to school, their faces were all chubby and round.

Entering middle school is the developmental period, I am delicious, and I have a few weird recipes:

Soda to make rice. In the summer, I open a bottle of iced Yuquan mountain soda and pour it into the hot rice, like soup and rice, which is very refreshing to eat.

Tea and rice are sauced with radish. Liubiju, Tianyuan or Tiemen are all famous sauce gardens in Beiping. My mother said that I like to eat this way because when I was a child, I ate "Ocha Pickles" in Japan, Japanese people often eat tea to make rice, and Japanese pickles are called "Fukushin Stains", and it is also very refreshing to eat with it. Until now, I still like to eat tea and rice to make melons, so that it can be used as a meal.

Grilled bread with roast lamb is sour plum soup. At four or five o'clock in the afternoon in the summer, each lamb bed will burn a pot of spiced lamb, full of aroma. At this time after school, the stomach is a little hungry, buy roast lamb sandwiched in the freshly baked baked cake, next to if there is a dried fruit shop, come to a bowl of cold sour plum soup, hot roast cake lamb on the cold sour plum soup, now think or drooling. I remember why now I like to eat foreign things called "submarines", roast french longbread and cut it open, sandwich it with roast beef or tuna or ham, and then some lettuce, onions, etc., with a bottle of Coca-Cola, meaning the same ah!

Grilled cake fritters with kimchi. It's an early breakfast, hot tahini grilled cake with freshly fried fritters, some sour and spicy kimchi, and another flavor.

Since we decided not to return to our hometown in Taiwan, of course, I have become what Lin Huaimin describes me day by day: "Taiwan girl, and there are Beijing rules." "Food, language, I am all Beijing taste." Although minnan dialect is spoken, it has become "Beijing Taiwanese".

Just diagonally opposite my home, is a house called "Yongxing Temple" but can not see the temple-like house, commonly known as Nanliu Lane "Newspaper Room". It has to be written in the history of the newspaper industry in Beiping, because Yongxing Temple became the dispatch office of The Beiping Newspaper, and every four or five o'clock in the morning, before dawn, all the wholesale newspapers were concentrated here. Just outside the wall of my house, there was a loud noise, because they were crouching at the base of the wall waiting for the report. The pick that sells almond tea has also come, and on winter days, Beiping people are used to drinking bowls of almond tea in the morning, hot and warm. When the newspapers sent the newspapers, they had to make a lot of noise, because they bought the newspapers first, sent them first, called them first, and sold them first!

The shouts on the streets of Peiping are suppressed and frustrated, each with its own witty words and pleasant sounds. Newspapers were not originally street food, nor did they beat gongs with sticks, or hit the utensils they sold with rattan sticks, such as the knocking cylinder tile porcelain that sold the cylinder tile porcelain, the hammering pot that welded the foreign iron pot, the small leather drum that collected the old goods, and the iron piece that was worn by the sharpener. Popular with the children is the "sugar gong", his small wooden mallet hit the small copper gong, the clear gong sound is not a few sounds, the children are running out of the small house door! Around the pick, see that there are a hundred and ten delicious, fun, and good-looking things on it, such as egg skin, sour date noodles, green apricot dipping honey, colored glass beads, small clay people, soda balls, cigarette paintings, sticker paintings, small glass rings, bracelets and so on. The child without money stands on the side of the pick, looks at this and that with envious eyes, picks up this and looks, asks for the price, pinches that and looks, asks the price. Those who play sugar gongs already know who is holding the money in their hands, and who has no children, so they narrowed their eyes and said, "Less movement!" Go home and get the money! "Look, how hurtful a child's self-esteem!"

As for those who sell tabloids and evening newspapers, those who say cross-talk once described their shouting: "Buy a group of strong newspapers and look at it!" Watch this big girl schoolgirl on the news! "Beiping tabloids, such as small newspapers, Qunqiang newspapers, and Shiyan newspapers, have many novels serialized on them, and reading tabloids is a pastime for citizens, and when the situation is tense and changes a lot, it is the sales of the evening newspaper.

Nanliu Lane is an alley with all directions, out of the north entrance, is the west gate of the liuli factory, my cultural area; to buy books, pens, ink and paper are all here. I described in detail in "Living by the Bookstore", now, I not only live at home by the bookstore, but also "live by the newspaper room". Out of the south of Nanliu Lane, it is the intersection of Xicao Factory, Wei Dye Hutong, and Sun Park, which is my daily life area; roasted cake twist flowers, lamb buns, oil and salt shops, mutton beds, pork bars, small medicine shops, and even bathhouses, pawn shops, and underclosure shops, etc., are the daily living needs of the families in this area. Out of the West Grass Factory is Xuanwumen Street, my junior high school alma mater Chunming Girls' High School is on this street.

Chunming Girls' High School is a private girls' school run by Fuzhou people, and the number of students is not large, so almost all the students in the school know each other. Because in the south city, it is the place where Peking Opera entertainers live, so some children related to Peking Opera, as well as those who act in drama and movies, all go to school here. For example, the drama movie star Bai Yang (named Yang Junli when I was a student) was one class lower than me, the Peking students were popular to act in dramas, and the student drama movement held meetings, and I went to participate with Bai Yang on behalf of the school. She and her sister were living in an apartment in the West Side. She has fair skin, flexible eyes, and a smile that is always open, which is very cute. The two daughters of the old student Yu Shuyan, Hui Wen and Hui Qing, are in the same class as me and are good friends. Their homework was excellent, Hui Wen later studied medicine, Hui Qing studied finance and business, lived a conservative life, and their father did not allow them to listen to the play, let alone sing two sentences. Yan Huizhu is also in this school, many classes lower than me, so I have not seen it.

Nanliu Lane is also an important place in my life's residence, and the time is long, from the ten years of my fatherless growth, through reading, employment, marriage, all from here; my efforts, my hardships, my happiness, my sorrows... It contains all kinds of emotions, and one thing is that we have a harmonious, interdependent family, and that's because we have a virtuous mother who never complains.

Eikoji Street

In 1939, I married Chengyao, my husband's family lived in the nearby No. 1 Yongguang Temple Street, a five-minute walk away, although I left Nanliu Lane, it was still my mother's home, and it was very convenient to come and go. I came to a large family of more than forty people to be my sixth daughter-in-law. The situation and life of this family have been described in the article "Idle Garden, Lonely Scene depression". The house on Yongguang Temple Street is a house designed and built by his father-in-law after his retirement from the eunuch sea, and he once described it in the "Branch Nest", which mentioned the white lilacs planted, lantana, grape trellises, and wisteria trellises, which I admired. Two years ago, Zhuo'er visited the mainland and returned to his former residence of birth, looking for the housing of his grandfather, grandmother, and uncle. Who knew that the yard was covered with a small broken kitchen, and there were twenty or thirty people living in it, and there were still shadows of white lilacs, green grapes, red tassels, and wisteria flowers! This is also conceivable. Zhuo Er wanted to take a picture of grandma's house, but she couldn't take a picture, miserable!

In 1941, I became the mother of my first child (the old rule of the Xia family, when the child is full moon, you must first go to your mother-in-law's house to kowtow to her and say: "Mother, give you congratulations!"). ”)。 At that time, I was still working in the library of Normal University, although there were servants at home, but when I was not at home, my mother-in-law and concubines all helped take care of the children, so it can be said that I worked all day in the office without "worries"! Our room lives upstairs in the East Courtyard, Zhuo Er is a night crying lang, and the grandfather who lives downstairs will go upstairs in the middle of the night to watch in winter. The second sister-in-law loves Zhuo'er even more, and she often goes upstairs to stay with me for a day or two and take care of the children. The second brother and the fourth brother all went to the rear of Sichuan, and the second sister-in-law and her five children moved from Shanghai to live in the Big Family in Beiping, and under the very hard life of everyone, she actually sewed the dowry satin clothes with colorful silk threads and asked me to make a coat for Zhuo'er.

Under the summer canopy, in the hall house, while talking to her mother-in-law, she rubbed the paper medium of shisha for her. Sometimes Shanghainese who sell southern goods come and put their burdens in the yard, and the mother-in-law will buy the Jinhua ham, Hangzhou tea, tin foil silver paper, Fujian tobacco and so on that she needs. This life experience lasted until after the victory of the War of Resistance, when I became a mother of two children, and we asked to move to a small triad house on South Long Street and live an independent small family life.

South Long Street

South Long Street is a quiet and beautiful street, which belongs to the Forbidden City. This street goes down, after Xihuamen Avenue is the North Long Street, the eunuch Li Lianying's mansion is there, a female middle school is there, I have not asked my family the reason, why is there such a row of eight small doors and small courtyards on this street in the Forbidden City? We live in one of them, number twenty-eight. I later guessed that this must have been the residence of the former Qing Dynasty's qi ding, coachman, cook, and little eunuch who were on duty in the palace! There was a family in the cul-de-sac behind our house, and there was an old man who spoke in a yin and yang strange voice, and was said to be a eunuch. Maybe after the Republic of China, the father-in-law bought this row of houses cheaply! Although the house is small, the area is good, opposite is the back door of the ice kiln in Zhongshan Park, the weather is good, we pushed the rattan child car, pulled the big, pushed the small, four children crossed the road from the ice kiln door to enter, is the big cypress under the piece of tea, Perth Xin, Chang Mei Xuan, ChunMing Hall, you can drink tea, eat snacks, play chess, the house can open a painting exhibition.

On Fuyou Street, outside the south exit of South Long Street, there is a private art and literature primary and secondary school, where Zhuo Er is studying in the first grade, and I also became the mother of my third child at this time. I took Zoe's hand every morning, took him to school, and picked him up again in the afternoon. Standing outside the classroom window, watching them take the last class, probably there is extra time, the teacher let the children tell stories freely, Zhuo Er has the desire to express, often listen to him, there is always a story of "farting", once actually sang the Beijing opera: "Wu Jia Po squatted my legs are sore, downhill to look forward, see a sister-in-law..." The people outside the window laughed, and I had to laugh embarrassedly!

At this time, it was already a time of uneasiness, and as soon as the situation was restored, the family in Taiwan, including my Lin family and my mother's family surnamed Jane (my mother's birth mother's family name was Jane, and later became a daughter to the Huang family), wrote letters from time to time asking her mother to return to Taiwan, and delayed until the second half of 1948 before making a decision.

We boarded the plane in Nanyuan, the plane circled around Peiping City, and the last glimpse was the glazed tile roof of the Union Hospital.

Looking at my twenty-six years in Beiping, the Beijing dialect is crunchy, and the seven-voice Minnan dialect is in the four voices of the Chinese, which can be described as "JingweierTai", so people after returning to Taiwan often ask me: "Are you from Kaohsiung!" ”

My Beijing flavor memories, to this point for a while, when writing always think of this and that have not been written yet, in fact, to spread the child to write, is endless, leave it to remember what to think of in the future and then slowly find it!
