Calcium citrate: an organic calcium salt, alias calcium citrate, usually a white crystalline powder, slightly soluble in water, soluble in acid, almost insoluble in ethanol, is a safe and efficient calcium supplement, also used as an anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory agent, bone repair materials and so on.

Biomedical materials: Materials that interact with biological systems to diagnose, treat, repair, or replace tissues, organs, or enhance the function of organisms.

Background: Calcium citrate as a calcium supplement, anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory agent, bone repair material, etc. has a good application in biomedical related fields.

ObjectiveTo describe the basic properties of calcium citrate, summarize and discuss the preparation process methods and their main applications in the field of biomedicine.

Methods: The research literature related to calcium citrate was retrieved by computer in databases such as Web of science, CNKI and Medline, and the main search terms were "Calcium citrate, bone repairing material, Citrate and calcium phosphate, calcium citrate, bone repair material", and the publication time was set from February 1920 to February 2020.

Results and conclusions: With the development and exploration of medical materials, it is an inevitable trend to change the original process method to improve the biological activity of medical calcium citrate due to performance requirements, and to obtain a variety of microscopic morphologies and high biological activity by using a controllable synthetic preparation method. Calcium citrate is widely used, such as as calcium supplements, anti-inflammatory agents, anticoagulants, bone repair materials and some other non-medical applications, its advantages are slowly being discovered by researchers. The preparation method plays a decisive role in the application of calcium citrate, different internal structures and sizes will bring different application areas, from the smallest chemical bond connection to the macroscopic morphology or mechanical properties, these factors may be the results of the researcher's painstaking exploration.
