Nanping set blocking battle

■ Liang Zhongyu

On November 21, 1948, as the troops were constructing fortifications in the Luoji area south of the Xun River, the cavalry communicator Pegasus sent an order from the brigade commander to quickly rush to Nanpingji, which was close to the south bank of the Xun River.

When we arrived at NanpingJi, it was already dark. Entering the command post, brigade commander Liu Feng, political commissar Hu Ronggui, deputy brigade commander Xu Qixiao, and chief of staff Wang Yanquan were gathered around to study the situation. Brigadier Liu smiled and said, "Aren't you asking for the most arduous task, and now the task is here!" The General Front Committee decided to take advantage of the attempt of huang Wei's corps to rush forward to lure the enemy deep into the area south of the Xun River to fight in a more favorable area for us. Only a small number of troops of our column were left to delay the enemy's advance in the Luoji area, and the main force of the column moved to the line of the Xunhe River to block the enemy. "His finger is on the south bank of the Xun River," Huang Wei was anxious to aid Xuzhou in the north, and had rushed to this area of prominent isolation to bring. The task given to our four columns by the General Front Committee was to block the Huang Wei Corps head-on, and to buy sufficient time for the main force in Nakano to maneuver and complete the encirclement of the enemy. Deputy Brigadier Xu said: "The defensive front of our brigade is about thirty miles from Dawangmiao and Nanpingji to Dongpingji. The Huang Wei Corps had jurisdiction over the Tenth Army, the Fourteenth Army, the Eighty-fifth Army, the Eighteenth Army, which was known as one of the five main forces, plus the Fourth Rapid Column, a total of 120,000 people. What about us, twenty-seven companies! Do you slap your hand and poke the enemy with ten fingers, or do you clench your fists and punch the enemy? ”

The words of Deputy Brigadier Xu led us to ponder deeply. Later, Brigadier Liu and Commissar Hu exchanged views and suddenly said in a loud voice: "We must carry out key defenses on the front of thirty miles!" A powerful fist must be formed in the South Ping Set! ”

Commissar Goli and I replied in unison: "We promise to complete the task!" "After we rode back to the regiment, we immediately led the battalion commanders to look at the terrain and worked out a plan for fortification construction and combat deployment. On the frontal positions, one platoon or two squads are formed as group fortifications that can support each other. We decided to extend the right wing position to Yangzhuang to the west; the left wing position to the south of Huzhuang to the south; and decided that the six companies would hold the prominent position on the right, and the Zhang Xiaodan platoon of the eighth company would hold the prominent position on the left. And an infantry company and a reconnaissance squad and cavalry squad arrived at the enemy camp to facilitate the early detection of the enemy.

At dawn on the twenty-third day, the enemy set out from Lugou Ji and fought with our vigilant troops. At about eight o'clock, the enemy's attack began. The enemy took out its "ace" troop, the Eighteenth Army, and launched a fierce attack on our positions. At first, hordes of tanks crawled over the open ground and stormed our fortifications with fire, then with flamethrowers, machine guns, and automatic rifles as the guide, and the infantry rushed over. Zhang Xiaodan's platoon on the left flank was violently attacked by the enemy, and they were nailed in front of the enemy like steel nails. In order to remove it, the enemy attacked more than a dozen times in a row. The fortifications were leveled, the platoon leader was wounded, and all three squad leaders were killed. The hygienist Wei Shurong and the few remaining soldiers held their positions...

After several onslaughts by the enemy were crushed, the main force of the Fourteenth Army attacked the position east of Nanpingji, hoping to cross the Xun River from there and detour to the flank of Nanpingji. However, the enemy's wishful thinking was soon shattered, and our troops, who were guarding the banks of the Xun River east of Nanpingji, under the command of Deputy Regiment Commander Hu Shangli of the Thirty-second Regiment, repelled several enemy attacks and held their positions.

The enemy learned from the failure of the offensive. They changed their tactics and concentrated both air and ground artillery fire on the forward positions of our army, and most of them concentrated on the positions of our second battalion and six companies in an attempt to break through there. The situation was extremely urgent, and one battalion of the enemy's troops, led by flamethrowers, had broken into six companies and three platoons. The five and eleven companies on both sides, together with six companies and three platoons, were blocking the enemy with crossfire and preventing them from expanding their breakthroughs. But the enemy did not flinch, and the follow-up troops also followed, all the way to the north of Yangzhuang.

The situation is getting worse. However, we must not lose our positions, so we decided to put the reserves into battle. I said to Commissar Ge, "Commissar, now you are in charge of the whole command. With that, I jumped out of the fortification and rushed forward along the traffic ditch leading to the front.

On the position of the second battalion, gun smoke filled the air, and more than a dozen enemy tanks were firing wildly from a hundred and ten meters away from the command post of the second battalion. As we passed the mortar positions, the batteries were firing heavily at the enemy. Because the road was blocked, the shells were almost gone. The soldiers in the trenches took up grenades and raised their bayonets. At this moment, the second company of the reserve team arrived. Good to be here! Like a fierce tiger descending the mountain, the troops pounced on the enemy in two directions. The enemy behind them was compressed into a row of broken houses, and a squad of the eleventh company, one platoon each of the fifth and sixth companies, and two platoons of the fourth company, invariably rushed to the place where the battle was most intense, and finally recaptured all the positions. The enemy suffered heavy casualties, stopped the frontal attack, retreated to the southeast, and the tanks that served as the spearhead also became the rear guards of the cover.

The spearhead of the enemy's attack was broken on our steel positions. Just as we were making a new estimate of the enemy's movements, I received a call from Wang Yanquan's chief of staff: "You have successfully completed your mission. Tomorrow, we will also lure the enemy deeper and lead him across the north bank of the Xun River. Use the Xun River to cut off the enemy. This shows that after the encirclement and annihilation of Huang Baitao's corps, a network of heaven and earth surrounding and annihilating Huang Wei's corps has been completely formed.

We braved the heavy rain and moved to the north bank of the Xun River. Through the night sky, through the dim flames of the enemy, I seemed to see the iron tongs closing behind the enemy. Huang Wei, a "military man" who was praised by the enemy as a first-class soldier, was finally put into the big pocket of our army along with his entire corps, and he could no longer redeem his fate.
